Thought it funny too, but I would call it more landscaping/building... if you look into permaculture... there is also the concept of watermanagement like swales.... Human tend to adjust their environment... important is to do it with the nature concepts in mind... and no dig gardening is the epiphany of working with nature imho

Charles, you should watch this video from a fellow permaculture designer named Canadian Permaculture Legacy. The video is called "What is a wetland filter". It's on all the critical aspects of pond design. It covers stuff like a wetland filter, an underground reservoir, waterfalls, aeration, phototropic layer, etc. A hole in the ground pond will soon become an algae pit. If anyone is going to build a pond, this guy's pond is OFF THE CHARTS, and he's an engineer, so he knows his stuff. He has a bunch of pond videos, his pond is the nicest thing I've ever seen.
@CharlesDowding1nodig2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim, sounds not so good for this one, shall see!
@jimcharles2702 жыл бұрын
@@CharlesDowding1nodig Maybe not all of the things like an underground reservoir to simulate underground filtration of base rocks, but some stuff definitely will be. Designing in a wetland filter on the area that brings the water in, that's a good example. Also having the water come in from the low edge of the pond, so that it's speed is minimized, minimizing silt carryover. If you don't do that for example, you may fill your pond with silt over time and have to re-dig it. The wetland filter will also filter out any herbicides/pesticides/salts that are coming in from other land around you through your trench. Then waterfall or some kind of windmill aerator to get oxygen in - to keep algae down. Honestly, his videos are amazing.

Even though it isn't the best of clays, mineral-wise, it will still do a fair job at holding water between rain falls .. Charles I can see and hear the excitement and pride you feel for your new pond development and especially working with your son Jack. What a wonderful time even if your a no dig believer, sometimes one has to dig to achieve something. It will be great to see it once full and planted up around the top. I hope it’s a success without pitfalls. We had a property in Qld very hilly with flatish paddock every so often , a new large dam (pond) had been dug on first field down from the house before we purchased, which sadly didn’t hold water, I think inadequate clay, we didn’t have spare cash at the time to investigate and in 7 year drought situation so left it, lots of inlet outlets to avoid overflow. Luckily we had another which held for our small herd of cattle in a lower field. When we sold the new owners lined the new one with black plastic, but when we drove by a few years later it still only had small amount of water in the base. Not a pretty site black plastic so looking back I’m glad we didn’t have cash flow to do it.

In its initial raw finished condition it looks like it’s off to a good start. Aquatic plants may help with water clarity. Also, perhaps a screen covering the inlet pipe’s mouth would prevent filling with debris. Nicely done project. 👍

I have a similar drainpipe in my garden, it’s a French drain to route water runoff from a steep slope when we have heavy rainfall. At the lower end of the pipe a wire screen is laid over then river rock of various sizes is laid on top. This masks the pipe and further slows the rush of water and stops erosion.
