Wonderful film. Beautiful. Heart-stopping when the fish leaps at 2.50 or so. Thanks for posting.

Once I would have agreed with you, but having now worked for a salmon farm in Tassie I am amazed at how tough these fish are. I've seen them after seals have got into the pens and bitten large chunks out of them and they've healed over and survived fine or with recent bites where their insides are outside and they're still swimming fine. Half the time I think the seals chase and bite them for sport. Those rocks would not have bothered that fish in any way. Cheers.

Indeed. I recently viewed a clip from the NH Fish & Game in which they "manually" spawn their fish by trapping their (Landlocked) Salmon in nets, squeezing out their roe/milt, then placing them back in the said lake one at a time. I was interested in their mortality and so contacted a person who's involved in this process and says he sees the same fish, out of the same water year after year (must be tagging some?), so the perceived rough handling of the fish has little impact on the fish's ability to recover from the process.

I have been salmon fishing for a long time and every one tells me to give line to a fish that takes a fly, I find it hard to do that, but on seeing this clip and how fast you hit when that fish took your fly I feel much better, nice fish & great clip.

Beautiful. It appears that some people need to remember that it's a fish, not made of glass. He beached it perfectly, can't be helped if its over cobble. Good on you. Cheers from Michigan

That fish will be fine. The fight was short, and it was out of the water for maybe 2 minutes. It was well handled, careful and fast hook removal. Nicely done! Beautiful fish!

its a scandanavian shooting head cast in the underhand style. Hes' swinging a small fly down and across, and doing little strips to exite and aggravate the fish into chasing. The fly is up right near the surface, and atlantic salmon rise up and chase and are "playful" and curious in that regard.

Great, inspiring video. I have my first ever Atlantic Salmon trip scheduled for next spring. Watching this I wish it were next week! But one question - I caught an 18 lb Steelhead a few years back (actually weighed) and this Salmon seems much larger. Closer to 30#?

This is the Grand Cascapedia river on the Gaspe Coast in Qc. Hennrick's landing technique is quite controversial, I use it and can say having done both (tailing by hand and putting it on its side in the shallows) the fish can be landed much sooner using his technique and you dont have to play the fish as long and thus stress it as much.

@nfldclay This is from the movie "the scandinavian speycast" with henrik mortensen. Dont remember exaclty what river he is fishing in this clip, but it is one of the top Tier rivers in Canada. costs a fortune to fish there i guess :)

@Bluebeltonproduction I'm not talking about beaching it as in dragging the fish over dry rocks, but tipping it on it's side in the shallows is far batter than playing it to near exhaustion to be able to tail it, or better yet scooping it up in a nylon net nets full of knots. Anyone who thinks the salmon lying on its side in the shallows is harmful should come to the Bonaventure and watch them spawn sometime, impressive.

It would depend on how much you fight them, if it's exhausted then yes get it back in right away and revive it. If you get it in quickly it isn't a problem as log as you make sure you don't just throw them out and hope they'll swim, reviving them as they face into the current is the best.

@zircon215 I didn't know that grabbing a fish by the tail instantly paralyzes it. This is good information. Whats your method of handling fish then??? Let me guess, you are a gill grabber??
@aburgheim15 жыл бұрын
Great to watch but for us as sport fisherman it seems hard to realise that salmon are a threatend species, atlantic and pacific. What´s really sad is that SF in most cases dont seem to care when salmon disapear they just go to the next river. Remember the longer you fight a fish the higher the chance of his death. Catch and release is all fine and dandy but honestly most guys fight for the adrenaline rush and can´t wait to catch the next fish. We become salmon fight junkies.

Nice catch ...nice fish...BUT this fish is certainly dead. The released was too long. Studies said that we should't keep a salmon out of the water more than 5 sec. Never beach a salmon. See FQSA video on how to release fish

Yes but after a fish has been played and is caught it is weak and under a lot of stress. A fish out of water whacking its head of rocks isn't the best thing for it. In fact if I keep a trout that is exactly how I kill it. That fish was fine I'm sure, but we as anglers must do our very best to take care of our rivers and fish.
@Arnie18089 жыл бұрын
Beaching it on rocks when your gunna catch and release isn't a good idea. Never heard of carring a net?

Henryk did nothing wrong, except hold the fish out of the water too long,Drag it up on its side on jagged rock( should have got it into shallows to tail it-but not drag it on its side0 Tailing does not hurst a fish with your hands- I don't know where th idiot before stated such- gaffs and tailing metal loops do hurt the fish1 Was this Newfoundland?......hmmm!- also he revived it just barely in silted water with no flow- not good for an already stressed out fish-otherwise all jealousy!

Never drag a fish on to rocks to land it. Brutal.

big brutes that making it back to childhood days, do they die ,after breeding?,sumthin tells me the atlantic go back into jungle of sea likely be ate by a dolphin whatever,dodgy crazy world for those sea dudes,always try make back home to breed,you get 1 those on your rod just needa think if going sow a new generation before axing it, but you know if large number of others are about,best thing release it if dont spot many

Part2. 3.. Grabbing the fish by the tail ... effectively paralyzing it. Doesn't he know what this does to the fish? Doesn't he know that gaffs and tailers have both been banned here for years? 4. Let the fish still lie on the rocks after the fly was removed. 5. Lifting the fish out of water ... just so the jerk can show off his catch. 6. Let the fish fall over while it was being revived. 7. Reviving the fish in slack water rather than in the current
@Zircon_21514 жыл бұрын
Part1. He might be an international casting expert, but one thing this jerk is not, is a fisherman! This is a large female fish and it will have two roe sacks each the size of a small child's forearm filled with thousands of eggs. Here's just a few of the things he's doing wrong: 1. Dragging over rocks a fish that is going to be released. 2. Pulled the fish on top of a large rock in the river.
@Zircon_21514 жыл бұрын
Part3. 8. Reviving it with the head across or partly downstream rather than having it face upstream. Look buddy, you got a number of great rises from her, you hooked her, she gave you a beautiful jump so you could see her ... filmed it really. Why didn't you return her the favor and then snap the line off? You are one sorry excuse for a fisherman ... one I'd certainly not want to fish with!
