The bolt must be recently removed from its housing because there is no trace of rust on the thread. If nothing is done, with the vibrations of passing trains, the bolt will be ejected. There are several neighbouring bolts that are intact and can compensate for this lack, but for safety reasons the bolt should be replaced without delay, as the stresses generated on the other bolts could lead to their loosening or breaking.

If you notice the bolt is opposite of which the others are facing meaning that one was replaced at one time. Frog bolts are notoriously come loose due to high impact and heat cycles. One in itself is not dangerous. We used to torque them with a big torque wrench after awhile the whole unit just has to be replaced. In certain areas we went to spring swing nose frogs to reduce impact loading probably not practical in a heavy high traffic are . Great video be careful around the tracks JT
@Mytrainvids2 жыл бұрын
I had a frog fall apart on me while I was pulling a freight through a switch on the Arcade & Attica Railroad in 2003 resulting in two covered hopper cars going on the ground. A missing track bolt isn’t always an emergency as they usually have other bolts in redundancy for added integrity. Track Speeds generally get reduced when joint bars are missing bolts.

Jawtooth, why did you not go down to the crews working on the tracks and tell them? That bolt is in the frog and could cause derailment even at slow speeds. You could have showed them your video or phone photo. They would have appreciated that.
@kaseyaldrich47462 жыл бұрын
Signal maintainers don’t work on track structure… the gentleman in the video, are maintainers. Secondly, it’s one bolt, not a critical or urgent defect. Thirdly, track inspectors run every day and mark their issues. And lastly, we don’t normally appreciate people being on the property or fouling the tracks. It’s a safety issue For us.
@brothermatthews13002 жыл бұрын
@@kaseyaldrich4746 I am well aware that signal maintainers don't work on track in that capacity. I worked on the railroad. Telling them of the problem will result in them telling their supervisor who in turn will contact track maintenance and can then dispatch a crew to fix it. That bolt being loose presents a problem that the others are stressed in ways that they are not intended because the loose bolt is missing. This can cause issues when cars cross over the frog. No one was telling Jawtooth to walk on the rails to go down to them. He could walk on the side of the right of way and call to them and they would have come over and been appreciative. Your response makes no sense unless you work for NS which are known for being hard-headed in the industry.
@kaseyaldrich47462 жыл бұрын
@@brothermatthews1300 I mean I been a maintainer for longer than I care to admit, so it’s not like I’m making it up. Been thru track inspector class, been an ARASA, been on the geometry cars. Being a maintainer I worked hand in hand with the track inspector, which is who you’d be calling anyway, I’ve called about bolts being out on frogs, which is partly where I learned things. But hey, what would I know about it.

Tha is for coming to my hometown. Another cool place in Muncie is Broadway at McCullough park. Broadway was renamed Martin Luther King. But the trains cross the river on a cool tressell. There where you filmed as a kid in the 50’there were many more tracks at the walnut street crossing. You could never pass without being stopped by a train. There was a guy come out of his shack and would throw the switches and then be at the crossing waving his lantern. I loved watching him. No matter how cold and snowy he was working the switches and the crossing. Check out the McCullough park tressell over white river. It’s pretty busy.

I'm truly stunned that a YT account holder with 179k subscribers, who is clearly a major railfan would see an issue that has the potential to cause a derailment at such a critical point (potentially blocking three lines) but decide to film it rather than alert the trackworkers that are less than 30 seconds from the loose bolt. Even at the low speeds of the first train, there is the potential for the frog to move and allow a flange to ride up and derail. I've been around railways in the UK for much of my life (safety and technical support to private operating companies and heritage lines) so I understand fully that clips, bolts etc. work loose every day and rarely present a major threat BUT if I'd seen that, I'd have gone straight to the trackworkers and made them aware - then they can make their own call.
@Slide1642 жыл бұрын
I worked the tracks building switches and track etc. This is not a big issue, they do regular patrols looking for this type of stuff. A missing bolt with that kind of redundancy is nothing compared to the crap I saw working for Canadian National.

Locomotives have a distance counter on the operating display. You can either set it for the length of your train and you can hit the "START" button when the head end reaches the end of the restriction and have it count down, or you can have it count up from zero. Either way it allows you to know when you are clear of a restriction.
