Large brown bear catches a salmon, - Narrative by Tom Griffin, August 13, 2011

A large female brown bear cathces a salmon near the mouth of McNeil River. Tom Griffin, ADF&G biologist and Supervisor of the McNeil River Sanctuary, comments on bear morphology. There is no place like the McNeil Sanctuary to learn to be comfortable with a large brown bear running directly towards you and eating a salmon only feet away. They are aware of our presence but are not interested in, or concerned about, people.

I have not observed anything like that. Since these bears depend so heavily on salmon I would suspect that any difficulties in "processing" them would be selected out of the population.

I think, she didn't really like the head of the salmon, but then she ate it, even the eye.

because the head piece has the hardest bone(skull) and it takes longer to chew. if there were plenty of the fish, they would leave the head.
