Toyota 70 Series Landcruiser Auto conversion with the AB60 by Wholesale Automatics comes standard with a steel sump. For extra $$ you can get the deep cast aluminium pan which, as they spruik, has an extra 3.25 litres over the stock pan.
What the glossy literature does not tell you is that to "easily" remove and replace the pan your life is going to be a bunch happier if you remove the cross member. I speak only fro the 79 series twin cab auto conversion perspective (appreciate with a 200 series you can access all pan bolts).
Now, I don't know if this is also a common theme with the auto conversion, but the rear drivers side pan will run interference with the front propeller shaft coming out of the transfer case. The steel pan on my AB60 looked like it had a judicious touch up at that location so much so I could not fit a socket or a ring spanner on the 10mm bolt.
To get that bolt off I used a chisel and hammer to squeeze the pan metal away from the bolt head, I show that to you in the video.
Of course, the new larger capacity pan is one size fits all so it needed a bit of precision engineering to get fitted and allow a bit of clearance between it and the propeller shaft. All in a days effort to obtain the reward, I HOPE.
What am I chasing? If you have watched my video on towing with the AB60 you will know the temps are at the higher end of the specifications so I'm chasing cooler transmission temperatures, particularly towing, towing in heat, towing up hills and of course in 4wd.
I appreciate this will not be the "fix", but it is part of that formula, to my mind. I still have 2 more "works" in the pipeline that I hope all be finalised by mid September to provide a more thorough and robust transmission oil cooling solution, for my vehicle.
