Largest horse in history called Samson was a Shire horse gelding born in 1846 and bred by Thomas Cleaver at Toddington Mills, Bedfordshire, England. According to Guinness World Records (1986) he was the tallest and heaviest horse ever recorded, by 1850 measuring 219.7 centimetres (7 ft 2.5 in) or 21.25 hands in height.[1] His peak weight was estimated at 3,360 lb (1,524 kg)[1]

He was a Shire draft horse, if I recall correctly. They're the largest of the four primary draft breeds, the other three are the Clydesdale, Percheron, & Belgian. They're gentle giants, incredibly smart and a pleasure to train & handle 🤗❤️

If the horse in the vid really is the one, then it's not a Shire, more likely Percheron or Belgian draft. Shires and Clydesdales have longer legs and don't have such humongous necks. Also, Shires have much more feathering on the legs.

From what I’ve read, he was indeed a shire. He was an exceptionally large gelding; stallions & some geldings do have more of a crest to the neck, plus the breed has changed over time. So, the heaviness of the neck can be explained. The feathers are present in the photo, though not as prominent as modern shires groomed for show. The feathers could be clipped, or just not as thick & groomed out

The horse from the picture is actually Brooklyn Supreme “Brookie”, a lovely big Belgian Draft stallion that stood at 19.2 hands/195cm (a little smaller than Sampson) but almost as heavy!

Actually this is a Greek breed of war horse, bred in Ithaca by a guy named Ulysses and sold, along with a bill of goods, to a guy in Troy named Priam who used this stallion as foundation stock for his horse farm which is very famous to this day.

documented details of equine like this one is making me question the validity of claims of horses being smaller before modern era. I am finding more and more documented evidence that horses have been relatively the same throughout history. Some big some average height and some on the shorter size. The men in the picture are dressed in clothing appropriate to the turn of the Twentieth Century... Making it not only the world's largest horse, but it's oldest also.😂

1 PS is the power one wrecked mine pony can consistently supply over the course of a work day (8+ hours). Sufficient to say a healthy horse of this stature can have A LOT more power. Especially for short durations of time. He wouldn't be able to pull a several tons heavy tree trunk through mud for hours. But in short time implements? Definitely. (I believe race horses are estimated at about 25 PS during a race (that lasts a few minutes))

Samson later became a world champion race horse in the kentucky derby with the only jockey who was a little person/ midget stood 2/12 foot tall they won he 1914 kentucky derby, Samson was later put down after running over 3 horses and there jockeys killing all of them ,sad story. Samsons jockey someway lost control over Samson That killed all the other horses and there jockeys

The taller they are the harder it is to find tack, trailers, etc that fit. So, unless you already have all of that, it can get expensive. Speaking from experience of going from large ponies to average sized horses to 17+hands thoroughbred and 18+hands Holsteiner. It was a big jump to have to get stuff that fit!

Why don't they measure at the head? It doesn't make sense to me. If I owned horses I dnt care. I will measure at the head or ears. Ill do it the other way too but We don't measure ourselves or any other animal just to our shoulders. We include their neck and head.

Horses of the same breed have different neck lengths and a different head carriage ( how they hold their head). The common point for each horse of the same breed is at the withers.
