In the past, players were humbled by the fact that they were able to make such a good living for playing a game. They always wanted to put on a show for the fans because without them they would be in a 9-5 like everyone else. Nowadays most players have a feeling of entitlement and take it for granted. A lot of the “stars” couldn’t care less about entertaining the fans and many seem to actually resent the fans.

At some point it really is too much money. And unlike football where they carry the effects the rest of their lives (I do understand knee and hip replacements are common among basketball players), and where you can be given brain damage at any turn, it's just not the same mental and physical investment.

@@RaiderWarpath That was the argument when players made smaller amounts (owners did too) and they got more. A LOT MORE. People are not watching the league as much. I'm not sure why sponsors are paying so much and TV deals are so huge. I don't think any given player actually is responsible for league-wide income like Jordan (or Magic and Bird). Ultimately, a ton of guys who are interchangeable could make 1 million but nowadays they make 20 million. To your larger point, this is the puzzle to solve. It's clear to me that even with corporate governance outside of sports that the sheer amounts of money debase the mission of the organization when it becomes too wealthy and powerful. How do you solve? Well, it would mean people actually turning down things for prestige reasons. Meaning, you end relationship with sports betting (go back to the old ways), you drive a harder bargain and withdraw a bit to a smaller scope (possibly contraction even) so your league is in a position to weather the inevitable storm.

The game is international, faster, players are more skilled in their use of athleticism. As a consequence of the more side to side explosive movements of today's superior players, injury rates are up. Yeah I don't like Silver, he's NOT been a good commissioner, but I don't think we can lay the blame for this at his feet only. It's a systemic cultural problem with the players. But yeah man, Silver has done NOTHING to address it. Things could improve by something simple like a uniform dress code, on-court and post-game. The players look sloppy and unkempt. Twenty years ago, franchises were fined if the players' on-court shoe color didn't all match. It's the little things. Btw, "strict or stern." That choice of words wasn't lost on me. Nice 😊

@Piairom
@Piairom 4 күн бұрын
The problem is not the 3 point line it’s the 3 second rule inside the paint and scoring inside the paint only counts 2! So superstars today prefer to shoot 3, gain more money than to be injured with the physicality of scoring inside the paint only 2 points! To change this the game must end the 3 second rule and scoring inside the paint need to count 3 points too to balance the game...this way head coaches will drop the exclusivity of shooting 3s and will return the importance of a dominant big men that can score 3s inside the paint and get and1 situations so the team can get 4 points and hurt the other team with fouling out! With no defense, no intensity this way all teams will lose and foul out...but with more defense and intensity you will have to become more aggressive on offense if you want to get advantage of scoring inside the paint....now 3s are better than 2s that’s maths but with this new rules if you have an opportunity to score 4 it’s better than 3s...it’s math too and head coaches will set new plays and strategies to get this 4 points...because the 3 is already guaranteed inside the paint with an higher fg%.

Not only did old school players play more defense, but they played more offense as well. In the 1980s/1990s you had a really good mix of offensive diversity. You had Kareem with his sky hook, guys like Hakeem, McHale, and Worthy with their post moves, guys like Jordan, Wilkins, and Drexler with their driving and slashing, and guys like Reggie Miller, Dennis Scott, and Sam Perkins with their 3 pointers. AND the mid range game was so big that it was literally the heart of Larry Bird's offense. Bird shot 38% form 3, a great % for that era, but only attempted 2-3 3s per game because he had offensive diversity with drives, slashes, fadeaways, tip ins, post ups, passing, the 3s here and there, and his bread and butter, the mid range game.

Nique had a better career than T-Mac and Vince (these are Kobe’s peers and competition at the wing) but it’s MJ who played against plumbers. 🤣 Dang, Rudy Gobert and Dwight Howard together have more awards thanks to their DPOYs than PG-13, T-Mac, and Vince combined. Robinson won more awards than Giannis, Jokic, and Embiid but I thought MJ played against plumbers? 🤣 Why does David have more accolades than the last three guys who won the last six MVPs? Wasn’t MJ hogging all the awards won? David wasn’t even the best center in the 90s. “MJ had weak competition!” It’s all his fault for dominating an entire decade that these other greats failed to do! Kareem played in the weak 1970s winning all those MVPs and he doesn’t have as many actual trophies as Jordan. I’m combining the awards of Magic + Bird or LeBron + Kobe or whichever were the two best players from each decade and they’re still losing to Jordan in awards won. MJ is making every other great who won awards look like peasants! They mostly have less than half of what he won. MJ isn’t just the GOAT, he’s the undisputed GOAT. A combination of skill, talent, stats, individual accolades, team accomplishments, legendary moments, influence, impact, clutchness, and heart are why MJ will always remain the GOAT. The marketing, charisma, mystique, aura, the glow, and the shoes are only extra.

Bird famously hated the 3-point line, despite being the best shooter of his era. And we're seeing now why. it essentially punishes good defense and rewards bad offense. the result is the post-up, mid-range and slasher roles that used to be the heart of the game have been reduced to nothing. now it's just 3-pointers and cutting to the basket for uncontested layups. 💤😴 even Anthony Edwards who made a reputation being an exciting slasher realized that it just makes more sense to hoist a dozen 3s a game than to attack the paint. Wemby, who has the potential to be the most dynamic big man ever, is instead playing exactly like Brooks Lopez, because that's just the most efficient way to play. Doesn't make sense for him to develop a Skyhook or a Dream Shake, just stand 25 feet from the basket and launch. That's the most efficient play in modern basketball.

"efficient" according to the data engineers who have ruined the game. Sports is NOT mathematics (nor is it a science). It is competition, first, entertainment second. This idea of "optimization" nearly ruined baseball so they changed the rules to incentivize more base-running etc. Hoops is heading down the path of obsolescence if this continues. The game sucks now. It just does. Why? NO DEFENSE. No resistance. It feels like the WWE. The foul calls, which have always been a problematic aspect of basketball, have been downright defective (flopping, exaggerating contact, INITIATING contact etc). Before, at least, refs used to swallow their whistles for incidental contact or contact that didn't materially affect the shot. Now? ANY bit of contact is whistled. The 3 pointer has ruined basketball not just because of the math (i.e. 3 pointers produce more points per attempt than 2s), but because it takes the SKILL out of the game. Contrary to popular opinion, players now are actually WORSE off "skill wise" than they were in past eras because they are not fundamentally sound. The "skillfull" players come from Europe (e.g. Jokic) where they still teach sound fundamental basketball (i.e. dribbling before you lift your pivot foot). They only APPEAR more skillfull now because of several rule changes that have legislated defense out of the equation and allow players to take 3, 4, 5 steps before shooting. Also, the analytics have taken STYLISTIC differences out of the game. In the 80s, 90s and 2000s, different teams had DIFFERENT styles of play: e.g. Triangle offense, Post-sets, catch-and-shoot with guys like Rip Hamilton and Ray allen, 7 seconds or less offense. Now it's ALL 3s and layups. The NBA died when Kobe retired. Curry tried to carry the torch, but the damage was already done by LeBron James (a superstar who, despite all the marketing hype, has TERRIBLE fundamentals and no bag). We're just here for the eulogy. The two worst rated finals of the past two decades were, 2007 Spurs vs Cleveland and 2020 Miami vs LA. Coincidence? Ratings suck now. The people have spoken. Without Curry's exceptional talent, and the Splash Bros briefly reinvigorating then league for a little bit, ratings would have already cratered. Now we are seeing it happen.

The NBA can easily be fixed with the following 3 changes: 1) abolish the defensive 3 second violation. Let the paint get camped by big players. 2) bring back hand checking. 3) move back the 3 pt line at least 1 meter, even if that means no corner 3 pt shots. These small changes will change the game for the better.

4) remove maximum contracts and introduce a hard cap salary. Rookies are getting paid on potential and not what's earned, it's literally ruining a lot of careers when the money is coming to them too easily, at maximum salary it doesn't matter if they sit out half a season, or make it to the playoffs or even win the championship if the money's the same there's no incentive to play or stay in shape (ie. What difference does it make getting hurt during the all-star game instead of a random regular season game after the all star break or before it? That argument is beyond stupid to me.

Ultimately, the buck stops at the top: Silver has to go. Sad to watch what's become of the NBA... It's not that hard: fans simply want a variety of post, mid-range and outside play; and a balance between offence and defence.

@AnHebrewChild
@AnHebrewChild 17 күн бұрын
How would you do that on the corner/side three? Widen the court? Here's another solution: eliminate the three point line altogether. The NBA introduced it in 1980, and though the 3pt shot took a number of years to completely change (ie ruin) the game, it did eventually ruin the game. No, I'm not an old head. I'm just a person who has researched basketball history... and finally came to conclude that the 3 point line was, overall, a bad idea. Rewarding teams for settling for outside shots is kind of akin to awarding more points for field goals than touch downs.

@@AnHebrewChildEliminate the 3pt line just because people like you are tired of seeing those shots? Fuck that. I don't like the overabundance of 3pt shooting either, but that just makes no sense. They should dial back or even include a limit on 3pt shots, not just get rid of it entirely.

Some of the bad things about 80’s-90’s NBA: 1. Players who couldn’t make half their free throws, leading to intentional fouling. 2. Illegal defense turned a lot of games into one-on-one competitions.

The ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. It was the era of the big man. Olajuwon, Moses, Jabar, etc. The highlight was probably the Lakers vs Celtics finals in ‘84 and ‘85. The “bad boy” Pistons. The Western Conference in the ‘90s, the two Rockets championships and the six Bulls championships. The dunk contests with Jordan, Wilkins and Spud Webb.
