Back in the 1970's when I was a teen... "Holmes" was mostly used as a way to poke fun at friends...to suggest they were not that smart. Like if one of them tripped or did something else that make them look silly, something someone would say "Way to go, Holmes" It was an insult, but not a malicious one. I think in the 1980's it was still being used in the same way....an insult, but one that was more in jest than in being mean.

Larry played street ball with the local black kids in his hometown growing up too, so he developed the same style of trash talk that you would see in street games. Today's players would crumble just at Larry's mental game, say nothing of his physical game! 🤣

My dad grew up a Lakers fan through the 80's, I was a kid who loved NBA basketball in the 90's and early 00's, and he taught me from a young age how Larry Bird was one of the most dangerous players he had ever seen with a personal albeit fun hatred for Bird since he was the ultimate rival to Magic Johnson's Lakers. He told me way before it was widely known to most people how Bird was well-known to be the biggest shit talker in the game but backed it up. That's why I grew up confused why when people talk about NBA GOATs, none of my friends or nobody mentioned him because all these people believed he was just a 3-point specialist when Larry was so much more. The irony is Larry didn't even take a ton of 3-point shots during his career, the 3-point line was literally brand-new to the game the year he began the NBA, but Larry just happened to be great at it like he was at virtually every part of his game.

I think he gets mislabeled as the three point guy just because he won the first three three-point contests. The reality is that he is probably the most complete player to ever play the game. There was nothing missing from his bag, especially early on before his back injuries. He truly was on another level and I think most of the Hall of Famers he played with, would not be there without his steals, rebounds, and passing. "Unathletic" my ass!

The Hick from French Lick backed up every single second of shit he talked. The dude had perfected the fundamentals to a level that people didn't even recognize how great he was at the time. He didn't do flashy stuff a lot, he just did the little things so perfectly.

We were saying, "Holmes" back in the mid 70's! Also saying, "Get a clue" also. Both were in reference to detective, Sherlock Holmes! Larry was more or less laughing at people trying to figure him or his game out! Forgot one, "No sh*t, Sherlock". Hahahahahahaha!

It's not trash talk if you can back it up. Larry Legend backed up every comment he made.

Bird trash talked the players, the players on the bench, their coaches, the referee's and even the fans. LOL. If Bird played in today's "soft feelings" league, he'd lead the NBA in technical fouls and ejections.

Thing is, technically, Larry Bird did *not* talk trash. Because it isn't trash talk if you can back it up. And "The Hick from French Lick" did exactly that. When he was playing I was living in LA, so of course Bird was a hated Celtic foil to Magic Johnson, Kareem, Worthy and the rest of "my boys". But, Bird, as well as Parrish and D.J., I had a grudging respect for. I "hated 'em" when we had to face them, but I always respected them.

And yes, "Holmes" or "Homes" is both African-American and hispanic slang from the 'Hood or the Barrio. It's a play on "home" or "home boy," you know: your boy from 'round the way. So, for pasty white Larry to use that term talking to Dominique, that is a straight-up diss. Cold.

Most great basketball players were black when Larry entered the NBA. When Larry was young he played with older black players and they treated him well. He called basketball a black mans game because of their physical abilities. So, it would be stupid to guard him with a white player who is inferior to any black player.
