From one Larry to another, I love you . You dropped alot of valuable insight. But, we don't need camera/mail-in/automated ticketing systems. That's makin' it too easy. Yeah, I made it look easy, because I always got that jab workin'. But, trust, that I put in alot of hard work, to make it look easy, not to lay the foundation for robot fighters. We don't need an electronic solution, we need to tighten up, and, of course, get that jab workin'. Big respect to you, brother Larry.

Larry, about 35 years ago, I was coming home from a friends house at about 3am. I had a terrible stomach ache, and I wanted to get home befire my intestines exploded. I was about 4 blocks from my house and I came up to a stop sign where there was absolutely no traffic on the cross road. I slowed down and looked both ways to make sure there was nobody coming and slowed down to almost being stopped and then proceeded. About a half a block later an unmarked car parked on the side of the road lit me up and pulled me over. I explained my situation and asked the officer to follow me home and I had a bathroom right inside my front door. I even told hime to come in the house and I would leave the bathroom door so he could watch me (for his safety) and give me the ticket after I had done my business. He refused and made me wait (and took his sweet old time), and the enevitible happened. He then accused me of doing it on purpose. I decided to fight this in court. When the judge called the case, I asked to approach the bench and asked the judge to hear this in chambers because of the circumstances, and he agreed. We went into chambers, and I explained the situation to the judge. He asked the officer if all that was true and the officer said it was. The judge chastised the officer and dismissed the charges. The officer was not very happy about it. About two years later, I was listening to the police dispatch channel (at the time I was a volunteer with the Office of Emergency Management) and I heard this officer's distinctive voice. He was at the local diner and was talking to one of the waitresses and didn't know his microphone was on. He was trying to impress her by telling her that he could run the town and the department much better than the mayor and the chief. He also said that the chief only had his job because he (I'll try to say it nice here) serviced the mayor's male genitalia. This went on for about 15 minutes right over the town's police duspatch channel until the chief came into the diner and said "So, I only have my job because I s$%k the mayor's #@ck?" That's when the radio went dead. Needless to say, he is no longer on the job. I love it when what goes around comes around. 😌

It's funny, I had a 1997 Saab that told me when a headlight or brake light was out right on the display screen. I've had three or four cars since that one and none of them had that feature. The conspiracy side of me wonders if police unions have a hand in preventing that feature from being included in more cars.

Just turn on your lights and put your hands on the wheel so they can see you're unarmed. They're gonna grab their flashlight anyway and look around the car, backseat, whatever, so might as well just turn em on

Soon as you said license plate light, man a bunch of memories flooded back. When I was growing up the cops who patrolled my neighborhood were incredibly racist. They hated my guts, being the only one of my skin color in the hood. I can't even count how many times I got pulled over for a "license plate light". Unfortunately these were the days before cell phones had video and internet. My favorite one of all of them was when he pulled me over in the middle of the day. It went EXACTLY like this, and believe me, I know it sounds ludicrous: "I stopped you because your rolled through that stop sign" "That's a traffic light, sir, and it was green" "Oh......... you weren't wearing your seatbelt." "Sir, I'm still currently wearing it." "Well, your registration is expired" "Sir, that says August of this year. It's June." "My mistake. Your windshield is dirty so I couldn't read it well. But you also have a license plate light out." "Officer. It's broad daylight." "I smell marijuana. Step out of the vehicle." At this point I'd get slammed, and I mean SLAMMED to the hood of my car. Searched, cuffed and thrown in the back of the patrol car while they tossed my vehicle. They'd pull me over and search me every single week, never once finding anything, until finally I got the right internal affairs investigator to take my complaints seriously. One of the cops went to jail on assault and corruption charges, I also sued him in civil court and won....the other officer was fired from the force. The moral of that story: Always fight the cops in the courtroom, never on the street.

I went on a ride-along in 1996 in Oakland, CA, on the night shift, when I was considering a law enforcement career. After being introduced on how to defend myself with the shotgun if the need arose, the night was essentially screaming from call to call, all of which were domestic disturbances, until about 2 or 3 AM; then it was sweeping through the poorer areas and pulling over every car - "license plate light out". I'm sitting there on the other side of the car, watching the cop search for drugs and guns on every stop, thinking...my license plate light doesn't work either, but I've never been pulled over for it. Most folks we stopped had a suspended license, so they couldn't drive the car away. Three hours later, driving through the same area, all these folks were walking home. We made one arrest, for threatening his wife with bodily harm (terrorist threat) during a disturbance call; the fellow certainly didn't understand the charge, and wasn't happy - but didn't really do anything that I could see which justified the the 6-8 cops gathering around, billy clubs out, "in case of a fight" during the transfer to the paddy wagon. This being 1996, I got out of the car to show them I was present, since...who knows what they were planning...I can't think it would have been a fight, since , to me, a fight is two dudes on basically equal terms, not one handcuffed black guy and 8 white cops with billy clubs. That's a state-subsidized, legal (assuming creative report writing) beating. That night pretty much ended my career plans. Not because there shouldn't be cops, I just came to a realization that I wouldn't be onboard with any of the current strategies employed; I just couldn't see myself being happy in that career. There was a general attitude among all the officers were they only dealt with "stupid people". Granted, the night shift does tend to bring out the drunks and other general maleficence, but there's plenty of people who work nights and evenings and have to drive home in those areas as well; the jobs in those areas really don't pay enough to cover an accident, a bunch of parking tickets, and especially not a DUI, hence the rash of suspended licenses. Oakland PD did this type of policing for years; the drugs are still there, and there's more guns today than ever. If de-funding police means employing alternative policing methods, like Richmond PD did (employing former drug addicts to work with current drug addicts), I'm all for it.

Couple of other tips (which did helped me when I was pulled over). 1. Make sure to turn off the engine before the cop gets to your door (already pretty well known but just thought that I'd reiterate it). 2. If it's at night, turn on your cabin lights (somewhat dependent on whether or not you have anything questionable in your car), this will help put them at ease if they can see who all is in your car. 3. Keep multiple copies of your insurance/registration. I usually keep a copy in the glovebox, center console, and most importantly wallet. The multiple copies are just so hopefully you'll always have an up to date version, but having a copy in your wallet will help keep the officer at ease since there's less of a chance you'll pull out a gun all of a sudden. 4. This last one is up to you since as Larry said if the cop sees you moving around in your car it may make him suspicious, but I usually pull out my wallet, put it in my lap, and return my hands to the steering wheel before the cop gets to my window. Again up to you, but like the other tips, it helps me keep my hands in sight at all times. 5. And lastly just to reiterate what Larry said, remain civil. A traffic stop is not the place to get into a heated argument. Pick your fights wisely.

I had my first stop in four years of driving just a few weeks ago. It was basic speeding and both me and the officer were very respectful to one another. He was enforcing the speed limit near a neighborhood on a back road and I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have. In the end, just be respectful, be polite, it usually saves everyone a lot of trouble.

( No tickets were issued, just random stops for whatever reason they chose.) Really good advice and should be taken for safety and less problems. Really cool you offering to help others. You got a lot of calls from it? I really agree about cops being used to help the community. Good way to put it. Never run or try to out run. Always an interesting watch. Great video

When a cop pulls you over and runs your plates, he knows whether or not you're on record as having a concealed-carry permit. So when a cop approached my car, I made sure to greet him and say, "I have a permit for concealed carry" (making sure that the first word is 'permit' before saying anything else about a weapon). Great advice, Larry. Thanks for your work here.

One thing I will add as a long time overnight delivery driver who has had many run ins with the police; at night, if you're pulled over, turn on the cab light. That shows them you have nothing to hide. By the time they came up to me, I had the light on, window down, hands at ten and two with my license and registration in hand. Most cops are pretty cool if you're willing to help put them at ease. Also, I've had police roll up on me during a delivery and all you gotta do in don't panic, don't move and show your hands. I've gotten pulled so many times lol I got to know some of them and they've cut me breaks because they knew me. I even walked in on a break in once and I knew the guys who answered the call. That's the way it should be. Get to know who's policing you. Especially your Sherrifs. They need your vote.

Cop pulled me over once and I accidentally gave him my firearms owners I'd card instead of my license. He went back to his car and didn't say anything. 5 minutes later about 10 other cops show up, ... Now cop must have felt this was a threat? So called the entire police force? Didn't amount to anything but some questions and a pat down and a field sobriety test. But he could of saved a lot of time if he just told me off the bat I gave him wrong I'd, was dark, a simple mistake.

Man, telling your friend’s story brought back bad memories for me. I have been pulled over one time in my 3 years of having my license. I was going 10 over the speed limit simply because I was unfamiliar with that road and didn’t know what the limit was. I was going along on my way to my new job with my music up pretty loud and in a generally good mood. Road was 50mph when I got on. I was going 55, which is common here in Texas. It dropped to 45, and I didn’t know and was still going 55. Eventually I noticed lights behind me but didn’t really think much of it because as far as I knew I was doing nothing wrong. Just kinda figured he’d go where he needed to go and be on his way. I know that may sound naive, but at the time I’d only been driving 2 years, licensed a year and a half of that time. I was a few months after my 18th birthday. No idea I’d done anything wrong. So I kept driving. Couldn’t hear the siren or anything because my music was up loud. I figured I was a mile from my destination and if he were stopping me I could just stop there. Went through about 3 traffic lights minding my business singing along to my music as I often do. He knocked on my windows while I was stopped at a red light. (Motorcycle cop) I’m a short woman, only 5’1”. My mom has always told me horror stories of men targeting women stopped in traffic. I freaked out and jumped in my seat. Just lucky I kept my foot on the brake 😅 I rolled down my window and realized of course he was actually pulling me over for some reason and I’d messed up big time by not stopping. He told me to get over right then and there. I was in the left lane at a red light and had to wait for it to turn green and made my way to the right as quickly as I could and stopped in a parking lot. I knew I’d messed up and was majorly anxious. Dude started yelling at me, causing me to cry. Tried so hard not to and apologized profusely for not stopping. Guy didn’t care and just berated me. Absolute jerk. I have never been in an accident and had never been pulled over. I explained after he told me the speed limit it was a simple mistake, but he ticketed me anyway. I know 2 people who were stopped in school zones and didn’t get tickets!! I am still so traumatized from that awful experience. Took me an hour of sitting in my car crying before I decided I was back in a good enough mindset to safely drive home. Almost got myself rear ended by stopping for a yellow I should have gone through. I was just so terrified of making any mistakes and possibly running a red. I have to drive down that road all the time now and every time I pass that parking lot those bad memories resurface. I wish I’d recorded that encounter. I get that I made a mistake, but that’s on him for how horribly he treated me. If I’d known to record I would have complained to the police department. Didn’t bother contesting the ticket though I believe it was wrongfully given, simply because they would never believe someone so young over an officer.

As you know Larry, the United States has laws in place to keep the peace and to protect the public / innocent living in this country. However, we should still all continue to be treated with respect and dignity when Interacting with Law Enforcement as we are still human beings. Hi Larry, my condolences from the EU, this sounds like a dystopia to me that citizens and policemen have to be/are that scared of each other. I travel a lot and came into contact with police in mostly European countries, but I never experienced such fear on either side. In my hometown I was once taking photos at night from a hill and the infraredlight made someone call the police. The police arrived, explained the situation, I explained what I did, they apologized for coming out and bothering me, wished me a nice evening and left. I even met policemen who unofficially showed solidarity with protests. More than once I got stopped at some borders and they disappeared with my passport, asking me over and over why I visited certain countries, sometimes disappeared for half an hour with my passport, but I never felt unsafe. It always seemed to me like they were inexperienced with foreigners with the particular visas or travel itinerary I had (I often travel roads that only locals used). I don't say the policing is perfect, I got profiled for silly reasons, sometimes positively, sometimes badly, sometimes inconsistently (e.g in the same country they checked once all my belongings while they didn't checked the belongings of locals and once they only checked the belongings of locals and ignored mine). But nobody yelled, nobody became aggressive or pulled stunts with multiple police cars, blocking roads etc. They treated you like another human being and even when there were many policemen, they tried to keep the situation non-threatening, only 2 policemen engaging you at once, sometimes only 2 engaging about 10 people, even if there were more policemen there that could act as soon as the situation got out of hand. In the end it is in their best interest too, how does threatening a (violent) person help make the situation safer? As you described, you were ready to run away because they came on so threateningly even though you did nothing wrong at all. So I wish you good luck in your endeavors and I will definitely buy your book :)
