Hearing these stories reminded me of the time my oldest brother was in a regional prison in Cleveland, Mississippi (Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility) and I went to go visit him. I was 4 or 5 years old (2003-2004) and I remember going to the restroom and there was a photo collage on the wall with pictures of things that happened inside the prison. There were pictures of guys laying in the bathroom floor covered in blood, covered with bruises, their bodies with cuts on them, feces all in someone’s cell or in the bathroom. I had never seen that stuff before, and at 4-5 years old I was so disturbed and terrified. I was terrified that something would happen to my brother in there, but luckily he didn’t stay in there long before he was released. I also remember on visitations he would tell us stories of things that happened in there.

My Uncle did 24 years for Armed Robbery. Until I was 26 he was always another voice on the phone, but I knew that he only had certain times to use the phone. So even if my grandparents weren't home to take the call. I would sit and talk to him for 10 to 15 mins. Usually around once a month. Lol, he was even my pen pal in 6th grade. I wouldn't trade those few min. and those letters, although sometimes graphic, for the world. He taught me life lessons over the phone and I had a firm grip of reality at a young age. Thank you Larry for sharing these stories of yours.... It really takes me back to my childhood talking to my Uncle...

It depends on the prison, your previous affiliations and what you are in for. I did a year and change without too much of an issue. Do not call attention to yourself, be respectful but stand up when necessary, mind your own business and don’t get involved in the three “Gs”. Gangs, gambling and gays. It’s a bit non-pc, but you’d be surprised how much trouble gets started over someone’s “girlfriend.”

The longest stretch I ever had was just 8 months in a County Jail in Maryland (right outside of Washington DC). I've never had to experience or even see most of the stuff you have. It's terrible to hear you describe all these moments, particularly the parts where your friends have died or killed themselves. I am so sorry that you had to experience those. Although obviously not on the same scale, I also witnessed death firsthand and I can tell ya, witnessing all of that happening and not being able to do anything about it hurts a lot. And like you said, you relive those moments, I felt that hard. I also still relive those moments where I've watched three close pets of mine die. Two of them were euthanasia, we knew they were dying and though ultimately we decided to spare them from more pain, I still cry now and then thinking I could have done something more. Again I know it's not the same scale as having a friend die and to experience that, I just can really sympathize with that pain. The third death of my pet was naturally in front of me. A cat of mine died of kidney failure, we were going to get him euthanized the next day but overnight I couldn't sleep because he was struggling so much and eventually I just watched everything happen as he died. That feeling of helplessness sticks with you.

It's so appalling and inhumane the way the prison system operates, and it makes it worse knowing how much more people care about whether or not a damn lobster has a big enough tank on the outside than the stuff going on inside. Worse yet are the folks who justify it with BS like 'they shouldn't have broke the law'. Man, the people I've met who've done serious time, I don't think a single one wasn't screwed right out of childhood and keep ending up back in because of how rigged it is. For the people who TRULY need it, there aren't nearly the resources or even effort put out toward actual rehabilitation. What are you supposed to do when you come out and can't get work, can't secure housing, can't catch a break? I respect the hell out of Larry for telling it like it is. It's gotta be hard, there are so many things I don't ask friends because there is real trauma they've experienced. All my love man, keep up that good fight and keep educating folks, because so much gets silenced.

I live in a bad area and it really hit me when this crackhead was pushing a baby stroller, and smoking a cigarette, and it ashed into the baby’s face below, she went “arhghh fcukk” and smudged it off….. Thank you for this! I’ve never done a day in prison nor do I have any criminal record, but the callous way people react to prisoner abuse is absolutely sickening. Not only are these people…well, people … but many of them are in prison for crimes that caused little to no harm. Furthermore, abusing them and laughing at their abuse only increases the likelihood that they will act violently in prison and when they are released. Do I want people to be held responsible for their crimes? Absolutely! But I also want these people to get better. Or, at the very least, not get worse.

He was an expert marksman so he's seen and done some shit that's had an effect on him. He keeps it moving though. He's also able to do target practice using his sniper air rifle without having any episodes

The Buffer Machine story is absolutely insane! That’s crazy he survived that. What happened to him after that? Did you ever speak to him at any point after that? How was his body damaged from that? Was his collarbone crushed? Was he paralyzed after that? He obviously sustained some permanent lifelong injuries in exchange from surviving that? If I were the one witnessing that, I probably would have been too frightened to even leave my cell.

Very harrowing stories, Mr Lawton. I am glad that you exposed at least some of these injustices. But people can sue if they get attacked in prison - so can't prisoners' families sue for medical negligence? Couldn't they get a lawyer or a pressure group to put pressure on prison authorities while the sufferer was still alive? Or is it all to do with money which most prisoners' families don't have? 🤔

I feel like women’s prison may be a little less violent. I’ve never been to women’s prison. I’ve never even been processed in a jail. I was in a holding tank for underage drinking at 18 and we sat around and told life stories and braided each other’s hair 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just found the site.. I've never been in prison, but I worked with a great guy who helps abused kids now, but had been in Canadian federal prison about 25 years ago now. He told me a story about his first cellmate who wanted to be more than friends,. To avoid what was coming, he managed to get a pencil, and one night he stabbed his cellmate 6 times in the balls. He got an aggravated assault charge and solitary, but he said after that, no one tried that again, and in federal prison, you have to do things like that..

It messes my head up just hearing about it. I did time in various British prisons in the past and I've seen some brutal things but American prisons are on a whole other level. Just seeing documentaries and hearing about it from someone who has been through it would be enough to put me off crime.

I saw 3 people die in prison all were preventable medical issues. I also had a kidney stone in county (I only have one kidney to begin with) I was pissing out blood and blood clots and told the gaurds and they did nothing they said "It's not life threatening theres nothing we can do" luckily my father bailed me out and I had to go into immediate surgery to have an 8mm stone removed. Doctors said I would have died if I didnt come in. Youre right they do not care if you are dying.

The worst assaults seemed to be the ones that happened after the final evening count. Your woken up by the thrashing in a cell and the cries for help. The guards are usually off the range or asleep in their bubble, and in most cases, help doesn't come in time. Hearing someone's head being stomped into the concrete floor repeatedly, and ultimately it was only unconscious that quelled his cries for help. It was hard to listen to.
