Speaking of cuffing up, I had to cuff up a serial killer named Larry Eyler (the Interstate Killer) when I worked at Pontiac Correctional Center, in the condemned unit in Pontiac, IL. I had to get a typewriter out of his cell. (Yeah, a typewriter.) He remarked, "You don't need to put these cuffs on so tight." I said, "Hell yeah, I do. I read a book about you."

Prisons are not meant to be nice places and is to keep criminals out of general society. Don't get me wrong I believe prisons are meant to be for punishment with an emphasis on reform but it seems to me the system is really just punishment and profits. I think it's society (USA) that is the one that needs most of the reform. The US has the largest prison to population capita in the world (which is absolutely disgusting for the richest first world country), with corporations profiting from the system and war on drugs, kickbacks for the corrupt politicians and a lopsided Economy that fuels majority of financial crimes. I have given up on the idea of the U.S. government to enact meaningful and effective changes to a lopsided law and criminal justice system if there continues to be a massive profit incentive behind it all. I believe money (or the greed for money) is the root of all (or most) evil and strongly believe that such an extreme capitalist system is what has created this prison system and many of the circumstances that have led many into it. I support law enforcement and criminal justice reform, and I believe an egalitarian moneyless society is the key answer.

George Perkins I am a corrections officer and I can tell you right now that not every prison or correctional facility is like this. You are right, though, it takes a special type of person to want to work in an environment like this. I can also tell you that there are bad apples in corrections work, just like patrol work as a law enforcement officer, but it isn’t as abundant as you may think. Some of the points that Lawton mentioned is true for my facility such as the food ports that the inmates call “bean holes” (don’t ask me why, I don’t know) and we slide their tray of food through that hole for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Now, there are food ports on ever single door of every single housing unit, and for that reason it is easier for us to feed the inmates, whether they be in a full general population tank or a single cell or special housing unit, it is easier for us to use the key to open the food port and set the tray there and the inmates come and grab it, versus us calling control, waiting for control to open the door, having the inmates line up, drag the cart of food inside the cell, and handing it to each individual inmate. While it is true that some CO’s can be institutionalized by working in the system, this is the case because of the environment that they are in. As a CO, whether that inmate is cuffed and shackled, you still have to watch your back 24/7, and a lot of the inmates are out to get you based on the uniform you wear and the authority and job you have to commit to. I can not tell you how many “new boots” (that’s a term we call the rookies that just started) come into the facility who are very nice and respectful to everyone they meet and they visibly look stressed, or scared, or nervous, and they get punked on. A lot of CO’s either go into “fight or flight” when this happens, and what I mean by that is they either decide that this isn’t the job for them, or they toughen up and they necessarily fight fire with fire; and while it is a good thing to stand your ground and not appear to be afraid, it changes the demeanor of the officer and causes them to act in an irrational and inhumane manner because they start seeing the inmates as animals because of the way they act and treat other CO’s just to either get entertainment or to be flat out malicious. As a CO you have to develop a sense of humanity, while still being stern. I’m not saying that every inmate in my facility respects me and likes me, but I have way less problems than the other CO’s that are on a power trip. I can honestly say that I have had urine and feces thrown at me, but those incidences were by inmates that did not mentally function correctly. Another thing, is that when our SORT (Special Operations Response Team) gets activated for whatever reason, it is never for a show of strength, it is always for the safety and security of the facility. Every time the armored officers breach a cell, housing unit, or recreation yard, it is recorded by body worn cameras, and there are several guide lines and rules to engagement we must follow. There is a lot that I can explain about the facilities I’ve worked in that are way different compared to what Lawton has mentioned, but I would be typing for a while
