You would've thought this was the World Series. That's how big baseball was at this time.

I remember watching this live and being impressed in such cold weather by the 97 mph fastball over the inside corner to strike out Manny looking at 8:26. Particularly after the 96 mph up and away at 7:41 and the 96 mph fastball fouled off inside at 7:56 on the two previous pitches. Unfortunately, people remember the disappointing ALDS start, which occurred on a rainy night, but they forget that Johnson threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief in game 5. More importantly, the Yankees only won the tiebreaker over Boston because Johnson went 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his final 8 starts and 5-0 vs Boston. Ultimately, Johnson was one of the best pitchers in the league in his first season as a Yankee. His addition made the 2005 team more formidable than the 2004 team that had the ball in Rivera's hands with a chance to sweep Boston before they infamously blew the 3-0 lead as the offense they had relied heavily on also went cold. The Yankees screwed up not trading for Johnson at the 2004 deadline. That 2004 team had a starting rotation entirely composed of righties and their bullpen was pretty much all righties as well, yet they had to deal with the likes of Ortiz and Damon. They should have parted with Javier Vazquez, who had been a flyball pitcher in the National League and was therefore not a good fit for the AL East, particularly as a righty in Yankee Stadium. His stock was high after a strong first half in 2004, however the Yankees had to pay Arizona to take him after a dreadful second half. They also shouldn't have foolishly invested in Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright after one strong season each in the NL.

Plenty of missteps in the 03 and 04 offseasons. Vazquez and Brown were both fine pitchers at the time, but expecting them to anchor the rotation coming from the NL was too big an ask. They needed to retain at least one of Clemens, Pettitte, or Wells And as great as Sheffield was at the plate, acquiring 29 year old Vlad instead of 35 year old Sheffield was obvious. Still not sure what Steinbrenner was thinking

Meh. One of the reasons they signed Randy Johnson was because they wanted a legit starter if there was a game 7 vs Boston and not Kevin Brown. I think everyone acknowledges how great he was in the regular season for the Yankees but his two duds in the 2005 and 2006 playoffs should not be forgotten.

This Opening Day game in 2005 (the first game that these two teams faced each other since the 2004 ALCS), is both the end of the Yankee-RSOX BabeRuth rivalry, AND the beginning of a new era when these two teams are just division rivals and nothing more.

My heart has never been more broken by sports than when 12 year old me turned on sportscenter to learn my idol the Big Unit was traded to the villains lol. Of all teams we had to send him to our 01 world series rivals and my most despised team. gahhh lol. Looking back we ended the Yankees reign and I don't have the hatred I once did for the Yankees. It's fun to watch these games now

Rare mistake by Jon Miller, Damon did not hit a leadoff home run in game 7 of the 2004 ALCS. He led off with a single and was then thrown out at the plate after making a baserunning mistake. Ortiz then lifted them up by hitting a home run on the next pitch. Damon did hit two first-pitch home runs in that game, the grand slam in the 2nd and a two-run upper deck shot in the 4th.

If only Randy got traded in July 2004 to the Yankees from Arizona as many expected (instead of January 2005), maybe he would have helped the Yankees avoid the collapse in the 2004 ALCS. Randy in 2005 was not the same I dont know why Randy was very inconsistent in his time with the Yankees. Sometimes he looked like the Randy we know, and sometimes just iffy. His velocity was there, so I wonder

I've made this same point repeatedly about the 2004 deadline. The Yankees foolishly refused to part with Javier Vazquez was a bad fit for the AL East as a flyball pitcher from the NL, particularly a righty in Yankee Stadium while the Yankees had no lefties of note in the rotation or bullpen going against a Boston team with Ortiz and Damon. They should have traded Vazquez while his value was high after an all-star first half because his disastrous second half was predictable and made it so the Yankees now had to pay Arizona to take Vazquez in exchange for a half season less of Randy Johnson. Although I think the main difference with Randy Johnson was adjusting to the AL East and New York as he himself spoke about how there was no break from the competition. It's not a huge surprise his Achilles heel was home runs in that division as he had surrendered 26 in the NL during a 2002 season he considers his best and 30 in his first season with Arizona. His slider seemed a bit less consistent, but there were games like his best start as a Yankee on 9/11/05 at Fenway where his slider was working and his fastball reached 99 mph. Overall, he started pitching at least 6 innings in each of his first 14 starts, got hit hard a handful of times over the first 2 starts of summer, though he pitched into the 8th in 2 of those 5 starts, and then completely found his form going 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA his final 8 starts. He finished 2nd in pitchers WAR, strikeouts, WHIP, and complete games. The Yankees primarily got Johnson to beat Boston whom Johnson delivered against going undefeated. For that reason, I think the 2005 Yankees were better than the 2004 team. Unfortunately, the Yankees narrowly lost an ALDS they could have won while Boston lost in the same round. The 2004 team was lucky the bats were hot enough to get the ball into Mo's hands with a chance to sweep.

@@mattray9904 To be fair, I always did like Javy Vasquez pitching repertoire ever since he was in Montreal. Cashman also liked him alot too, since he made Javy a Yankee twice. I guess Cashman saw Javy as the ace of the staff, but it just never worked out like that. Had the Yankees beaten Boston in 2004 ALCS, none of this Randy Johnson talk would have ever happened. And after looking at his numbers, in 2005, youre right, Randy was good with the Yankees. He had many quality starts. Sure, he wasnt the Randy of Seattle/Houston/Arizona, but he was respectable. Given, Randy was brought to be the ace of the Yankees along with Mussina, but it didnt work out like that.

@Hm hm: Vazquez was a good pitcher, but all wrong for the AL East and their need for a lefty made trading him for Johnson an obvious choice as the Yankees were all about winning in the present. As for Johnson, his inconsistency in 2006 was a mystery, but I think a lot of his 2005 comes down to pitching in the AL East. Pedro and Clemens lowered their ERA a run in the NL from their last AL East seasons around that time. I would consider Johnson an ace that first year whose dominance down the stretch and vs Boston won them the AL East tiebreaker, but I don't recall Mussina ever returning to the prime form he showed in the 2004 postseason after he regained his velocity coming off the DL around August, iirc. The Yankees also wasted rotation and roster spots signing Pavano on the basis of one really good 2004 in the NL and Wright on the basis of a merely good 2004 in the NL. Those signings made it so they had to rely on surprise performances from Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon to fill out their rotation. I don't blame the Yankees for the Kevin Brown trade. Brown's hard sinker had always made him a dominant groundball pitcher, and his even harder four seamer had also turned him into a dominant strikeout pitcher in San Diego and LA. That made him a logical fit for the AL East and he was coming off a healthy 2003 in which he nearly led the NL in ERA for what would have been the 2nd time as a Dodger and 3rd time overall. The Yankees had no way of knowing he'd lose so much velocity overnight in 2004, especially since he even regained some of it in 2005 before breaking down for good. Of course, they traded Jeff Weaver who had been a disaster in NY anyway.
