I’m sure when manufacturers who know you see your name on an order say oh shit, make sure everything is in spec we don’t want to look bad on KZbin. I think it’s great how some of the supposed highest quality manufacturers have parts that dont meet certain specs. Before someone says I’m an idiot I do understand when he says pass and fail doesn’t always mean parts are “ good or bad”

It is so diffucult to get screw threads in spec, especially turned threads that are plated or anodized. I have to approve so many deviation orders due to threads being out of spec. If the threads are not a critical characteristic that is called out on the CAD file, pass the part.

Great video. Just an FYI. The military is requiring less tolerances in the threads of the buffer tube do to the fact that if dirt or sediment gets in the threads it makes it harder to disassemble. If the threads were of very tight tolerances as what your desire seems to be and you get dirt in the threads while in the field it makes it very difficult to disassemble. If you are just a range shooter and don’t actively shoot in an environment that would get the rifle dirty it’s a moot point. Again great video.

If when determining the poor fitment of the buffer extension tube threads, how do you remedy that? Is it just a matter of trial and error by changing out different assemblies until you find one that fits properly or is there a company that you can contact to request the correct class of thread fitment? I have assembled one or two rifles myself from parts ( not a particular makers kit but random parts but trying to at least from the same manufacturer) and noticed poor fitting buffer tubes and castle nuts also but just attributed it to “mil-spec” tolerances because I didn’t know any better. But after watching your videos I am determining to pay much closer attention to tolerances and start adding tools that I have been missing to verify proper fit. Thanks for all your time and effort in making these videos and for your wife also for filming for us too! You have shown me that I have obviously not chosen well in the past who to take advice from. Humbly I thank you.

I've heard of tips and tricks where home machinists cobble together unique tips for soldering irons. I know that gunsmithing operations cannot necessarily afford the tools and equipment we use for professional applications. I use a portable inductive heater, instead of a torch when possible. It is only $600 for the generic kit, and we can make specialty inductors in house. It provides a very focused and controlled kilowatt to the assembly or part. It is super easy to follow OSHA hot work rules, and smoke emissions are minimized. I usually get called names, but that is how we do it professionally. Torches can work. MAPP gas works better than propane. Rosebud tips work well for Oxy/Acetylene torches. Another option may be to put it in an oven. We use process furnaces, although it is possible to use a residential oven. As a Loctite certified engineer, note that 99.8% of all gun and gun accessory manufacturers use the wrong Loctite product or use Loctite in the wrong joint design. Loctite 222 should be the most common product for guns, but most people have never heard of 222. I hope this helps.

@@boinger1988 idk. I bought a Colt upper a few weeks ago and I need to take the time out of my day to call CS. The extension bore was nowhere even close to concentric, sloppy as all hell too. Failed the fitment test and one of my 3 lowers I can fit a .030 feeler gauge in between, where my other uppers are relatively tight. In the BCG bore there's tool marks EVERYWHERE and it wouldn't bother me but they're incredibly rough. My dog bone marked upper that I got from DSA for $40 doesn't have any of these problems. But Colt is supposed to be "top tier". What a joke. If you buy Colt prepare to have CS on speed dial.

I guess it's personal preference on whether to break the finish on melonited bolt carriers wtih heavy staking, or preserve the finish with moderate staking? Seems to me that solid staking would be better given the heft of a bolt carrier. I'd never considered that as a drawback to that finish.
@ryanpeck3377

I got my 14.5 Pin and weld LaRue UU this week. i was not satisfied with the fit of the Buffer tube. I do not have guages. I emailed the dimensions to LaRue and they say its In Spec and OK. i might try vibratite. but I did order a BLEM VLTOR standard tube for 30 bucks with shipping. I think i will test fit that and make a choice. I am running it tomorrow AS LaRue sent it. but I did not stake it yet. just torqued. just going to shoot 25 Match grade rounds. I shot 20 rounds today using the HOWA break in specification. followed by two 5 shot 1/2" groups at 50 yards! and i was just shooting 62 grain FMJ reloads. I could definately see it breaking THE LOWER @ the Bolt Catch..but not ‘breaking’ the bolt catch, wouldn’t WANT to find out. I would just about bet that the newer gun owners would be more APT TO HAVE this happen than most other issue..”Dry-Firing a “set” trigger with the lowers separated”. Bet it happens MORE than we know..

That buffer tube is pretty embarrassing for a company that sells $2k rifles.

Yep. Firearms market is much hype. Someone in another video pointed out tolerances in firearms would get someone fired in the automotive world and I don't doubt it one bit.

This is an $800 Kit. Not a 2000 or $4000 rifle. I agree it’s still disappointing. But there is a difference
