What a great conversation! So much information and insight into different ways to have a ‘laser business’ that also relates to all maker businesses. Great show both of you. Thank you for taking time out of your schedules to discuss each of your business plans.

Great conversation guys - it’s so cool to hear stories from folks like you who have been in the laser game for 10+ years. I didn’t even know that laser engraving was a thing that could be done outside an industrial factory situation until about 2 years ago 😅 - thanks for the podcast. Cheers.

Thanks man. Those glasses youre doing on the diodes look great!!
@asherdiy2 ай бұрын
@@justinlaser thanks! Glass is tricky with a diode, but after I figured out a process, it works pretty well. I stopped selling glass engravings on Etsy for now though, because I just know that anyone with a co2 laser could do them so much faster (I.e. cheaper). I’m getting a co2 laser this week though, so maybe I’ll start it up again sometime. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Justin, you look so much more relaxed! Nailing the format ☺ The two of you are great team. You could make it a quarterly thing. I watched Michael’s video on removing the old engraving! I’d say it was the second one of his I watched. Too funny. I could write paragraphs on how much the insight you both provide means to me and the laser community. Best of luck to both of you on your pivots! Yours can still be zen gardens!

This was great I do mostly customer centric but I do have some products that compliment my primary business being a knife and tool sharpening service that also does laser engraving but this is such an important conversation and it's spot on. Funny I kind of do in between but mostly customer centric. I have learned a lot from both of you guys. Agree Tick tock Shop what the Hell I keep getting rejected they want my first born and my pets DNA now!
@justinlaser2 ай бұрын
LOL especially with the knives man thats going to be an uphill battle with TikTok Shop.

@@justinlaser the keep telling me my IRS form isn’t what they want so ridiculous I was going to put my custom cutting boards on it not knives but they seem to reject it for a different reason every time I try and get it done

Excellent - fascinating to consider and hear about those 2 different approachs. As Michael says, maybe it's best is to go all in and the cream WILL rise to the top. However, working very customer centric in my job at the moment I know that it's crucial to work out how long each job will actually take so you don't short change yourself.

I will say one downside to product based is stock. For example Richardson 112 hats are the most popular hats out there. But a lot of the colors are hard to find right now. Just a little example.
@justinlaser2 ай бұрын
For sure. Especially going into the holiday season stock is going to be hard to come by.

This was very helpful. I'd like to hear your thoughts on advertising, seo, keywords, etc for a small business. So much hype out there it's overwhelming for someone starting on Etsy, Shopify, etc. Thanks!

Just watched and great to learn about using black masking tape as jigs. Just wondering if you can use cloth tape instead so it is a bit thicker for jigs?

After listening to you both, I have started both types of businesses, customer and product. How profitable or manageable for new laser engraving business with a diode laser?
@justinlaser2 ай бұрын
With a diode I would focus on product-based. The are lots of limits to a diode laser especially when it comes to materials and the amount of time it takes to run jobs. Customer might want clear acrylic and that cant happen with a diode laser. However there are plenty of smaller and popular products that you can customize with a diode.

Say the name. I get that KZbinrs need to try and preserve their sponsorships but it drives me crazy that nobody will say anything bad about anything. Lots of laser channels losing credibility on this point, in my opinion.
