Well thanks a heap😉, Brandon, now I might have to rummage the basement to find my Laserdisc player and disc collection. I had a Sony machine that autoplays double-sided discs by flipping the laser and lens mechanism around at the end of a side, so you get an uninterrupted hour for CAV and two hours for CLV/CAA discs, at the expense of a larger footprint and taller chassis. Since the video is analog the best signal output is S-Video, which has basically vanished from TVs; I have to check whether my older AVR can convert and output an HDMI signal from an S-Video input. My discs are all 20-32 years old, which worries me a bit because the double-sided discs are separate pressings cemented together on the protective lacquer over the aluminized layers; the glue can deteriorate over time and cause playback problems. I know that my copy of _Angels and Insects_ , an interesting 1995 British "art house" film based on A. S. Byatt's novella _Morpho Eugenia_ starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Mark Rylance and Patsy Kensit, can't play all the way through the last couple of chapters because the defects are too much for the error correction software. Pioneer players are supposed to have better disc defect tolerance than others, but at this late date I don't think I'm buying another player just to find out. But it's a shame because this is just one of many older, more obscure films that isn't currently available for streaming or on newer physical media for the North American region, and that's probably true of some of the other movies I splurged for Laserdisc copies way back when.

If you like Kevin Costner I highly recommend No Way Out (1987) a very tense and engaging thriller about an ambitious young attache - a remake of the excellent The Big Clock (1948) - also contemporary tech features highly in both.

I recently got into collecting laserdiscs too. I 100% agreed about the art work! It’s what I love, especially if you get the gatefold covers with two discs or special edition box sets that come with a ton of extras like cards and books. The Star Wars trilogy and Terminator box sets are sought after because of this. I also have a number of special edition Alfred Hitchcock films on laserdisc like Psycho and Vertigo that came with a lot of extras.

I had laserdiscs back in the EARLY 90's. I sold the player but kept the discs thinking that after I moved back to the US I could get another player. Had a few movies but mainly concerts, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Faith No More, Pink Floyd etc. I loved the format. But I never got a player because I think it just wan't very popular in the states and VHS dominated until DVD then it was over for LD. So I still have all these discs and no idea what to do with them.

This video is a cool coincidence. A couple weeks ago my Dad thought he was buying a stack of records for $20. Turns out it was Laserdiscs. For $20 he got 25 different movies. Now I'm going to have to get a player for them. Lol

I had The Bear, The Karate Kid, A Goofy Movie, Roger Rabbit, Mission: Impossible and the first two Terminator movies on VHS. I never watched a Laser Disc and I wasn't aware of the format when I was a kid. I recently went to Willow Video and grabbed John Wick 3 on Blu-ray. True Lies was my first Arnold Schwarzenegger movie and a TV show is coming.

I still have my Sony Laserdisc player from 1997! It needs a little help. I have to crack it open and clean the lens and oil the mechanical stuff. It sounds amazing when working! I use the Dolby Digital 5.1 optical out and it's uncompressed audio. The picture is a little fuzzy and wonky compared to 4k of course. It's more a nostalgic thing for me. Just like my 8 Track tape collection. My go to is my 1998 Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition Laserdisc Box Set! All in good fun! Enjoy!

Those laserdisc packages are beautiful! I'm sure you'll find a nice place to display them. Do you have any CEDs (Capacitance Electronic Discs?) They make nice display items too although the laserdiscs have them beat with all of the inserts, etc. Great video as always!

4K usually makes a big difference on older movies. Makes older movies look modern. Gotta do 4K over other format . The laser discs look awesome. I might have to buy a few for the art work. The only time I saw these in person was my film teacher in high school in 1998. When he busted that big disc out I thought wtf is that. Laser disc research is blowing my mind. I had no idea that every movie from the 80’s and 90’s is on the format. Thought it was vhs then dvd. Really wrong 😑
