The truth is: A lot of 'tenors' don't use proper technique. Mickey Thomas is a tenor all his life. Never lost it. He uses chest voice, head voice and a mix voice. Mickey Thomas never pushed chest voice to eternity.

@@nesaragesara9855 So great to hear a comment from someone who knows what works. When I comment that a properly-trained singer can sing well into their 60s and still sound good, I’m always met with doubters. Sometimes haters. Lol. Mickey was one I thought of. He sounds so good. Deen could have had that longevity. Playing drums helped him overcompensate for sitting to attain some great breath support/sustain. (Easily moving from chest to head voice.) I never like bringing up the smoking. His range is *still there.* The sustain… not what he had. I really believe if he stopped smoking, he could get some of that back. He seems to rely on his chest voice now, as I assume he can get more power behind it. As it was, he sang with the pure, ringing tenor even as a smoker up to age… 54. Gosh, I hope he doesn’t read this. ☺️ He’s still amazing and well-loved by fans. ❤️

Steve Augeri had a singing "teacher" and did all the things he had to do to keep his pipes as fresh as possible. Let's face it, Steve Perry's vocals are virtually impossible to duplicate over the long haul. I can guarantee you that Steve Perry himself could not duplicate his own songs from the 70s and 80s. Journey's songs are works of art, both musically and lyrically. Why that band is not in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame is beyond comprehension. Augeri brought Journey back from the dead.

Journey wore Steve Perry down the same way, Too many shows too often and they never asked him how this greedy schedule was working for him, or talked about what he was going through… and ultimately this was wrecking his voice and his willingness to keep this amazing version of the band going.
@raysurx201011 жыл бұрын
Of course because his voice was gone! There is a DVD they recorded in Vegas not sure the year, but that was Augeri at his peak, and all his versions sounded much closer to Perry than Arnel. Arnel if you notice cuts his words or chops his words on a lot of songs, to prepare for the high notes. But he doesn't sing certain songs, the drummer sings some of the harder tunes. Arnel is great, has his own voice which sounds like Perry in his later years and I wish him the best.
@sedricrobinson94994 жыл бұрын
raysurx2010 Let’s be real. Arnel sounds somewhat like Perry, but doesn’t sound “just like Perry.” There in lies the REAL problem. They are all straining their voices to sound like someone else. Everyone has their own opinion and to fill SP shoes was virtually IMPOSSIBLE, there in only ONE Steve Perry, clones are impossible. SA did a really good job. I saw Journey 3 times with SA before his voice went bad and loved every show, and so did the crowds. They were sold out or close to it and the fans looked like they were having a great time. Remember that one year Journey did that 3 hour 2 set show. First half was the old material pre-infinity and second half Infinity and beyond. I am sure those long shows didn't help SA's voice. I thought Neal did a credible job with both lead singer choices. I mean he replicated SP with SA with the voice, name, even the looks a little bit but he was totally different except the voice. SA was cool, laid back VERY humble unlike SP who was VERY confident and brash in his prime and at times looking back borderline selfish. Arnel was an awesome fit and carried them for years and I am sure they all made millions. They got in the HOF, renewed they're careers and now it's over. Neal already moved on to his new Journey. Neil will be playing until he's a 100 or he gets sick and dies. He is a freak and has to perform live, which is fine. I'm not knocking him, just stating the facts. It was a great post Steve Perry run.

Mark I completely agree. They both did well as Arnel is doing. You either like Journey for the music or you sit and berate them for wanting to play tunes that would wear any seasoned vocalist out.

Realistically speaking Perry's voice with age has matured...and no he does not sing those high notes anymore....but he still is able to modify anything to his mature "now" voice and put out a beautiful, emotional, high quality "Rock and Soul" performance. Stop comparing him to his 30 year old self people. You sound ignorant. I did see his EEL's performances and for a man getting back on a stage after 20 years he was incredible. Conditioning and rehearsal matters and by his 3rd performance in Los Angeles with them he was breathtaking. Steve Augeri on the other hand sounds like shit. It's been what? 10 years or more.....and he still has that throat infection that makes him sound like this performance here. And he is still singing Perry's songs with his Steve Augeri band at festivals... pretending he is someone he is not.

Touring back to back to back nights with Journey's catalogs will be hard to for the lead singer. But business is business.

As sad is this vid is of a superior vocalist falling to the rigourous tour schedule of journey. I smile everytime Steve looks to Deen to sing the High B's. It's like hey man please help me out here. And Deen Delivers. True comradery even though they are getting paid. I think its just cool that they had that chemistry and deen could follow through.

I agree.... there will be nobody that can compare to steve perry.... he did it night after night and STILL sounded awesome.... I seen them in concert last night and Pineda was absolutely terrible and sounded EXACTLY like this video.... I have a feeling they are gonna go through singer after singer.... NOBODY will ever compare or be able to endure the rigorous beating a voice takes like steve perry because they are immitators and steve was natural and blessed with a gift........

I feel so bad for Augeri. Deen is one good friend. I wish Steve would have stayed in the band, Now I think is the time for the Master, the rock n roll crooner and power lead man Stave perry would make his return. Come on guys, no pride in the way, just great feelings.

@HigherWisdom Yup. The first time I saw Augeri with them I was blown away...in a way, he actually sounded more like Perry than Pineda does....and probably sung better at the time than Perry would have....

Seriously Dean castranova is a bloody legend not only a shit hot drummer but a damn fine singer to boot journey need to learn to rest their singers properly this was cruel to Steve he deserves better.

you really got it right bro..journey's concert are gruelling..take a look their concert schedules OMG..and most of their concert last almost 2 hours so it would be a vocal punishment on the part of arnel pineda..but i guess AP could handle it well coz he got a natural gifted voice thats why he can last with journey.i just hope they will take care of him..i just thought that the journey production wants to earn millions again.i hope AP wont end up sick. just wanna wish him good health

It's a shame However, also funny how things work out. ... In steve Perry Journey had a complete package, he was a great singer and he had stage presence. Augeri had great stage presence as he connected with the fans well but his voice couldn't take the strain of touring and died. With Arnel Journey has a phenominal voice but he lacks the stage presence that either Perry or Augeri had. Chose your poison and Steve Perry is not on the poison menu!

Yeah. He was great. A real trooper and a great talent. I hope he is doing better. I heard he had more throat problems after the infection.

As a trained singer I have to say that Augeri seem to be suffering from a condition called LPR. Look it up. I have suffered from it for the past year and it wrecks havoc on your voice...especially when reaching for the high notes. You lose most of your range...and it takes both time and medication to get it back. It has to do with stomach acid hitting the back of the throat. Augeri is a great singer, and a super nice gentleman. I met him in 05 and he was a class act! I wish him well.

I saw them just after SA joined in Massachusetts Great Woods. They were awesome! They did lots of new material including Good Time tonight, which never was on an album. Then I saw them when they were out with John Waite and was disappointed they didnt play more than 3 or 4 new songs while playing tons of SP/JRNY songs. I really wanted to hear more of the new songs and they could have medleyed the old stuff like they do today. Medleys would have made it so SA could jump to a different song before all the crazy high notes. Then to top it off, I expected John Waite to do a jam at the end with Journey doing Forget me not and when I see u smile from Bad English. But John Waite left town as soon as his set was over. What a missed opportunity! Other fans in the audience were pissed too. Popular misconception is that Fans just want to see the most popular songs live and very little straying from the format. But they obviously didnt pay attention to how successful Hagar was in reinventing Van Halen. He never lived in DLRs shadow. I think the promoters and executives dictated this and the band was not willing to go against that. That's why JTT is so popular. Because it's spontaneous, inventive, and it seems based on the communications Neal has with the fans on Social media.

Hope he recovered soon so he could join in one of Journey's frontman visits on LIVE in one of Journey's 5oth Anniversary Tour.. See link below kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4rMiamYbZWFjK8
