It is the last day of picking corn for the 2023 harvest season. We had a great final day of picking. The wind howling and the corn leaves in the air, really brought this beautiful fall day together. Thank you all for watching! Make sure to leave your comments down below!

I worked at IH's FARMALL PLANT in Rock Island, Ill most of the time the 686's were built. I wasn't sad when they discontinued that line of tractors and built the 786's. Like many other commenters I grew up on a farm in NW Illinois, Dad raised 700-800 head of hogs every year, 80 acres of ear corn picked every fall, put in our huge corn crib and ground to feed the 40 head of cattle who also got 3-4 bales of alfalfa hay. Dad had several cattle butched and sold to friends and family, the corn fed beef was better than ANY other type of beef. Hogs ate ground shell corn all bought at the feedmill, by the time I was 8-9 years old I was making the 5 mile trip to town with my 1939 FARMALL H and Hieder auger wagon 2-3 times a week for hog feed. I did spring fieldwork, Dad bought me a John Deere R diesel about Christmas of 1963 for spring fieldwork spring of '64, Just what every 10 year old wants, a John Deere. We still had 22 acres left to plow when Dad got rid of it, I finished plowing with our Super M-TA. I cultivated corn, mowed hay, raked hay, and in 1963 Dad bought me an Original Cub Cadet to keep the place mowed up nice. By about 1967 Dad would pick with our 2-ME mounted picker on the '51 M, I'd haul in and unload. By 1968 I was working for neighbors doing fieldwork as well as still helping Dad. About 1970 I started working for our largest hybred seedcorn company rouging and detassling seed fields. Our small town of 5000 had THREE seed corn companies. When I was about 5 years old my folks bought me a Saint Bernard dog, a great pet for a young farm boy. We got a second one while I was in high school, and we bought Our son one when He was 6-7 years old. Would be nice if you could shop more shots of your St Bernard out and about.

I agree with your principle on equipment value, I said the same thing about my forage harvesting equipment. I owned it, the equipment worked as intended requiring few repairs. My only real cost was my fuel and my time. The equipment has little resale value. And the cows eat the feed just the same. Great video !

Mounted pickers started out in the 40s. John Deere discontinued their mounted picker in 1973 when they introduced the 30 series tractors. I believe the 300 was dropped in 1987. New Idea discontinued their 324/325 pull type picker in 1984. White (Minneapolis Moline) discontinued their 1200 stationary sheller in 1975. I remember how difficult harvesting our 1992 corn crop. We were using New Idea pickers then. We had a muck field that we had to let sit until the spring of 1993. There was a lot of down corn by then but it wasn't to bad with our picker and shelling unit with the 4020 power shift only having to wear a Tshirt and not a heavy winter coat. A lot of guys lost hands running pickers so be sure to shut it off before trying to unplug it. Plugged stalks can get pulled through faster than you can let go of them.

Feeding ear corn is the best feed in the world for cattle and hogs. We still pick and fill the crib. We pick 6-800 bu.a year. Fill the crib and fill three wagon loads and grind off the wagon. We use a New Idea 325 narrow row and use a 656 same tractor as your 666 but ours is gas and use the 966 once in awhile.

Hi. If y'all ever get tired of the open picker I sure love the John Deere 300 3 row picker behind a cab tractor. After having several NI pickers the JD huskers sure are simple and with the combine corn heads with adjustable deck plates there is very minimal shelling. To avoid tipback I have found that by planting two similar length maturities side by side in 4 row blocks extends the pollen shed time to help ensure full kernel development on the ear especially in dry years. Beautiful farm you have out there

I always wished IH had put the 16 speed transmission into the 686's instead of sticking with the old 10 speed that dated back to the M's. It sure sounds nice, though! I am curious does the 686 have the mechanical TA or the hydraulic one that will hold back on a hill?

In all due respect, your going way too fast with that mounted picker!! That is why your running gathering chains off and plugging up. The machine has to be able to pull the stalks through without pushing the plant forward first.
