C.S. Lewis, once commenting on this degradation of language in the modern times used the term "verbicide" (murder of word), wherby classical descriptive terms are turned into evaluative and vice versa. Just consider some clasical terms and see how the modern desacralized and desacralizing worldview requires (by necessity) that these words undergo similar changes. For example, take the word "myth". The classical meaning of this word once meant some kind of "higher truth" or as Ananda Coomaraswamy once said, "Myth embodies the nearest approach to absolute truth than can be stated in words", it is now often taken to be something false or untrue or words to that effect. Modern European languages, especially after the "epistemic turn" of post rationalism of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw their rapid secularization, making them less and less qualitative, losing their traditional symbolism. The qualititavive and symbolic loss of the macrocosm could not but affect the same in the microcosm. And that became clearly expressed and visible in the languages of that worldview.

And between him (Eliot) and, say, W.H. Auden, there is a sorry chasm that cannot be bridged. Both social realist and surrealistic art in twentieth century---one revelling in "objective" signs and imagery from the material realm and the other in subjectivist navel gazing---are underpinned by the same desacralized, anti-metaphysical, materialist ontology and that worldview requires modern poetry and art to denude classical languages of, or rob them of their traditional symbolism, lest the artist be accused of "childishness". The total dissolution of form in modern art is nothing if not Satanic, and Plato would agree with that assessment. Forms are, after all about the intelligible world whereas sense images remain vague at best and misleading at worst, often leading to distortion and disintegration.

There is another way of looking at it Javed sahib. Modern European languages, especially English, may well have developed new ways of expression and new ways of making/keeping words and phrases fresh, but it must be acknowledged by any wise observer that these languages have also become less and less symbolic. Especially in poetry what used to be symbolic is now mere imagery and signs, all of them taken from and referring to the material world and lacking completely in symbolism which always connected the lower to the higher. In other wotrds, these languages lack the "vertical" dimension and indulge only in the "horizontal" plane of reality. This is so because with the desacralization of the modern Western worldview post Rennaissance, knowledge and especially the languages through which such knowledge is expressed itself became desacralized and "horizontal" or one dimensional. Just as the worldview has antimetaphysiocal bias, so do these modern languages. The last great poet in the modern West who was sensitive to that traditional symbolism, T.S. Eliot, was even able to say that "On Margate sands, I can connect/Nothing with nothing".

A symbol, a traditional symbol, always connects the lower to the higher. It does so because it is aware of the hierarchy within and without, in the microcosm as well as in the macrocosm. It cannot be without the vertical dimension. It makes the Eternal "translucent" in the Temporal (Coleridge); symbolic "vision or imagination is a representation of what Eternally exists, really and unchangeably" (Blake). Modern signs and images, as are often employed by modern artists, because they are anti-metaphysical and by necessity lack the "vertical" dimension, speak a language that is "the speech not of humanity but of shadows conversing with shadows about a shadow world (K. Raine)

"There is an almost one to one correspondence between the depleting of knowledge of its sacred content and the desacralization of the language associated with it; and also vice versa the attempt to elevate language once again to its symbolic and anagogical level whenever there has been a revival or reconfirmation of sacred knowledge or scientia sacra which would then seek to have itself expressed in the language available, but also appropriate, to it...The unifying vision which related knowledge to love and faith, religion to science, and theology to all the departments of intellectual concern is finally completely lost, leaving a world of compartmentalization where there is no wholeness because holiness has ceased to be of central concern, or is at best reduced to sentimentality" (S.H. Nasr, Knowledge and the Sacred)

This is not to say that modern Urdu poetry has escaped all this and does not have its own problems. You know better than the rest of us those problems, especially the increasingly psychological poetry that is nowadays churned out by so many, and that draws on similar techniques and employ the same kind of imagery that the horizontal modern worldview requires. I am just providing a context so that one can also see the alternative possibilities. (Dervaish, Quetta walla)
