The cabin is dated. The exterior is boxy (I like it, but it’s not for everyone). But it brings proven reliability. The cops thrash their Pajeros and still get 400-500,000km on the clock. Mine is 10 years old, 280,000km on the dial, but is more reliable than my other (newer) vehicle. It’s a hark back to the days when you just wanted a bulletproof engine and component reliability. In a market flooded with newfangled technology, models and blurred categories, the Pajero knows what it is and owners know what they’re getting - a solid, dependable, versatile 4WD at a competitive price.

terribly lazy review. you don't jump in a pajero which holds such a huge legacy to tell us its dated. lol we all know its been around for a while. we want to hear about its charm. its Dakar rally achievements are amazing. I own one and its truly the last of the true large family tough as nails real 4x4 just like the land cruiser. lol. dated!!!! that 3.2 will go forever and never let you down. the pajero is one of the only 4x4's or cars for that matter that can go virtually untouched since 1983 with the same model. its had a few tweaks and is still selling new in showrooms. the dealers can't keep one long enough. ita funny how dated it supposedly is and yet its one of the only 4x4 vehicles that can actually drive with 4 wheels on any surface at any time on the fly. another disappointing review!

You said it's not all that off road because of the lack of wheel travel yet it still outperforms the 200 series and prados off road. These are purpose built for off road with a bit of asthetics for on road comfort. Simple as that.

No, the Pajero does not outperform the Prado or 200 Series off-road.
@anthonyramdin1037

@@Unsealed The prado and 200 series perform better at rock crawling but that's about it. Pajero is better in mud, snow, sand and better at steep hill climbs etc. No doubt about it. Yes the pajero tc isn't as quick to respond as in prado but it gets the job done.

@@Unsealed Having full independent suspension does mean less wheel travel however it also comes with benefits. For example in soft sand there is no low hanging diff to be caught on. When putting new suspension in a Pajero it actually lifts the whole car rather than just the body. The traction control system is also very good when in the hands of someone that knows how to drive a Pajero. With a front diff lock a Pajero is just as capable as a 200series / Prado

Anthony Ramdin..... he forgot to mention how the pajero can go 4x4 on the fly on any terrain. that makes it still one of the best and a true 4x4. . so many still can't do this and the 3.2 done is awesome. will never let you down thats for sure. these journos go fof a joy ride and thats about it. tour with it around Australia with a caravan and offroad etc etc then come back to me.

Came here after your review of the ford Ranger sport (which i have owned for the last four months from new) which you said was a bloody ripper so much so that you bought one yourself, you had nothing but praise for it! - funny thing is i owned a Pajaro for 6 years before the ford and never had a single fault! Four months in and the ford has had a new gearbox and issues with the engine management. i feel the power and comfort was superior in the Pajero the ranger has the same power as the Pajero (on paper) (even though in this review you said it was under powered its the same power as the ranger you say you purchased) off rd Pajero is far superior to my Ranger! While owning a Pajero the only negative was that anybody who didn't own one would like to tell you how bad they are while every owner of a Pajero knows they are bloody ripper (me included) I made a big mistake not buying a new Pajero instead of this piece of c____ ranger. Theres a reason the Pajero was in production so long ! It was ahead of its time and bloody good on and off rd, Landrover has just caught up with manufacturing its new defender as a MONOCOQUE chassis/body ! I believe they are pretty good on and off rd as well!

Disappointing review - not because of what was said but the lack of context. Most 4wd spend most of their life on the black, and the Paj does well on this and solidly offroad. The steering is dull according to the reviewer but it is a true 4x4. So what was the comparison made to? Never said. I've been in 4wds that would be awesome off road but feel dangerous on the black. What tradie or soccer mum on the school pickup needs wheel travel, LSD and lockers? Most are utes, bounce around when empty and rarely see gravel let alone put into 4wd mode. As for the lack of tech, well less to go wrong when off road but I drive a 4wd for its capability and durability. Yes I own a Paj and it is a great all rounding vehicle, just not a status symbol (of being a prat)

Hello, You said that this big four cylinder 3.2 liters is quite down on power and torque even compared to much smaller capacity four cylinder turbo diesel Utes!! Actually the 3.2DID is producing up to 200 HP depending on the destination market and it is correct that today some 2.0L turbo diesel Utes are producing around 200HP or a little bit more like the VW Amarok or Ford Ranger... But you didn’t dare to compare the durability and the reliability of these completely two different mechanics concepts and your comparison was only limited to the engine output!! The first type is a workhorse and the second one is a high tech type for a smooth, pleasant and economical use suitable for leisure and some adventures. For your reference Toyota on the 1VD-FTV engine has downgraded this big V8 4.5L Turbo diesel from 270HP /650Nm installed on the LC200 to 205HP / 430Nm when they installed it on the LC70!! Do you think Toyota engineers are stupid by doing that?? In your opinion an over-boosted 2.0L Turbo diesel producing 200HP can be a substitute for the 4.5L V8 turbo diesel if installed inside a workhorse like the Toyota LC70?? Japanese brands are not stupid enough to sacrifice longevity in favor of economy, smoothness…as some European and/or American brands do. Just for your information inside of my off-road team, for testing purpose, we bring the 3.2DID output quite close to 300HP just with an ECU remap! Almost all members now has more than 200HP under the bonnet of their PAJERO’s and this big 04 cylinder still reliable and indestructible including extreme conditions usage. Below some samples of usage conditions inside our team: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGmumomEo7t_jdk kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJPLd6ifhtSJq6c kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnOrXoKrqraLfJI kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3Ozl2N4nbBlmJo kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZOaZHSNgtpoqa8

The Pajero is a great car. It’s incredibly reliable, cheap to run and service and it goes anywhere. I’ve had mine in the Flinders Ranges, salt creek, Beachport, Robe and Port Lincoln in the dunes and I’ve never had it stuck. It outperforms any of my friends dual cab utes easily. Where they get stuck the Pajero does it with ease. I’ve had a Prado and it has gone everywhere that went. It’s a proper 4wd, it’s not meant to feel ultra refined, real 4wds rarely do. It’s comfortable, my model (GLS) has heated seats, apple car play, auto sensing wipers, auto LED headlights. What more do you really want out of a 4wd?! Lane departure warning, blind spot sensors and all the rest of the electronic aids?? Go buy a Mazda 3 then! It’ll sad to see this go, there’s a strong market for real 4wds out there. I’d rather see Mitsubishi update it and if so add 10-15k to the price, it’d still come cheaper than a Prado.

I own a NX Pajero 280k and still drives like new its a very reliable capable offroad 4WD and like the fact it has a utilitarian appeal "this might be the confusion around dated" not form of function like some of these new 4wd's which is what many car reviews base their statements. Shame to see it go

simple design, nothing fancy but I enjoy driving it due to its comfortable seats & posture, high visibility & big windows, reliability, it's very spacious & is great to drive on & off road. Done Sydney-Melbourne more than 20x on this besides other interstate travels including one 22hr continuous drive (with short breaks) on this baby. I like how it looks; the boxy design & its style. In fact, I dislike the modern sleeky SUVs with not enough internal/back space, I feel they have compromised utility for style. I would have liked a bit more electronic features in it but it does the job for me. I love it & it's sad Mitsubishi decided to cut it off instead of modernizing it a bit more.

Down on power compared to new vehicles, eh? NW Pajero: Max. Torque 441Nm @ 2000rpm Max. Power 147kW @ 3800rpm compared to the new Dmax (or for 4 cylinder diesel wagon comparison MUX, I expect): 140kW of power peak torque output of 450Nm from a low 1,600 to 2,600rpm New Prado not that much more power and torque, yeah 150kw and 500nm but for how much extra?

I’ve driven a 2020 Prado and it disabled the traction control when locking the rear diff too. Not sure if you were just pointing it out or if you think it’s a downside? The only thing I got from this is that you care more about looks than going into depth about a car.

I just just brought a 2016 exceed for the fam, tested a Prado, Kia Carnaval and my family have a owned a heap of different land cruisers that iv been a passenger and driven in, but the Pajero was 20k cheaper then the Prado that was slightly quieter but kids didn’t like the visibility looking out and back seat of carnival made them sick and was about 10k more expensive. I bid on a Pajero sight unseen but only 60k on the clock, never test drove or been in one but just looked at reviews and comments from other owners. best car iv owned, heaps of power, I think it might be remapped maybe, Fuel sits on 7/8 litres on the highway, oil change was so easy and so much room to move around I actually enjoyed doing it. Just gotta take it off-road now

I see these all the time on my travels and all owners say the same. Uneventful. Doesn’t break down. Don’t care its 5 speed. Ultra reliable. Just goes. There is something said for ‘boring’. Regardless of being end of the line, hard to argue AUD45k as runout special in Australia as the last models are sold off. I know its old tech, but damn, 45k.
