Have been watching this series since the inception.I would get home once a week to see beautiful England, and the antics of three of my favorite characters. I left Hove, UK. age 13 for the USA. Felt like I was home again every time I watched the show. There will always be an England in my heart.

I recently purchased the whole boxset of this beautiful series (I collect boxsets) and am looking forward to watching it soon. I used my TV licence money as I don't watch the garbage they put out now. I found humour in some classic American soaps like Dynasty and Dallas also. It is there in the episodes too. Including Frasier. I was only six years old when this began. Time to catch up me thinks.

When I was watching this show on PBS in the late 90s I tried to recommend it to co-workers, but they were turned off. I think some of it was because the humor was too subtle, but perhaps it was because all the main characters were so much older than we were used to in these Britcoms. Me? I love this show because it is NOT roll on the floor funny, but it is more character driven. It made me wonder if my parents would have been like this if they grew up in the U.K. BTW, for those who don't look this series up on Wikipedia: this show is the longest, continuously produced, English language sitcom to have ever run on tv. The 1st episode aired in 1970 and the last episode that WAS NOT a re-run was shown in 2007. Obviously, there were some cast changes over the years, this particular episode was in the later half of the 37 year run....I think. And having seen the pilot episode (it was on KZbin at one point) and episodes before this one, it was funnier at the beginning. For the complainers: the laff track was a staple when this show first aired in 1970 and they probably felt they could not change the presentation in later years. And, if you are a fan of Britcoms: Frank Thornton played Captain Peacock on Are You Being Served, and the creator of this show would go on to create Keeping Up Appearances.

I grew to love this show. I am a Britcom fan from a very young age, and sometimes you have to make yourself just watch an unknown one to figure out the gist and, as you said, the subtly. That is what I love. The wiseass quips said out of the corner of a mouth when nobody is supposed to hear it. I do love this show. A bunch of old pensioners with nothing to do but avoid their fishwives and get into some kind of trouble. And the thick as a plank cops who take every opportunity to pull off the side of the road and take extended naps, and ignore the old guys causing mischief. It is funny, and relaxing, because it is not just always loud and raucous. I actually got a couple of my exes turned on to British comedy for the first time: "Just humor me and watch it for 30 minutes!" They wound up really liking "The Good Life," "Are you Being Served?" and "Fawlty Towers." I feel proud. 😂

I echo the comments made. In April of 2012 I was up on Nora Batty.com and saw that you could rent Nora's flat for a week. I called the number provided and a mate of mine, also a fan, drove me up from Norwich in June and in we went. Inside, the rooms and stairways were chockful of items that were part of an episode, and many framed photos in the stairway and on the room walls. In the kitchen, there was a life-size cardboard picture of a scowling Nora in her pini and hair pinned up, with a large broom at Port Arms. It was stunning, she was so life-like. When we heard a crowd forming up to photograph the famous blue door, with the 28, I would open the door and step out and ask if they were there to see Nora, they would all yell "yes." I would bring the cardboard Nora out on her porch and everyone would applaud and I would retreat so they could shoot all they wanted. When we were in the flat, I would repeat for each group of fans. Upstairs there was a loo. I went in to use the facility and as I dropped my pants, I was immediately startled and stood back up. Fifteen feet away was a life-size photo of Compo staring at me. It was quite funny. I never mentioned it to my mate, allowing him to have the same experience. We went to Sid's Cafe for sandwiches and a hot chocolate twice a day and drove up on the moors where the filming was done. Also, just outside of the cafe, a small rickety-looking 1920's bus would take you out to several familiar shooting sites for a 45-minute tour for 10 lbs. We did that twice while we were there. The week went quickly, mores the pity, but I have to say it was the best trip I ever had and have about 60 photographs with which I can reminisce in my home in Arizona.

This would have been so great had they left out the laughing. Everytime the "insert of audience laughing" (when it's so obvious they're not performing in a tv studio or stage) , well you can't hear what the person talking is saying from all the laughter. I really wanted to watch it, but the forced laughter got on my last nerve. I know when I what to laugh and when I don't. Not "everything" is funny in shows. We all have different senses of humor. Again, it was probably great! Why does someone always have this bright idea on how to mess a good thing up??!! Thanks though. L :)
