DontMindMeNow Not mention yes they did go to America to escape religious persecution....but here’s the ironic part. Said persecution was that the Puritans (not just Christians as a whole) specifically got tired of the Church of England forcing them to be a part of state sponsored religion! That’s right...THE ENTIRE DAMN COUNTRY (or at least that part of it) was founded on the separation between church and state and anyone that says “America is a Christian nation” is causing them to roll in their graves.

Fun fact, one time I stayed in Dubai over Christmas, that's a majority muslim city where it is arguable that Christians are in the minority and do face a certain amount of marginalisation (I never experienced it or saw it, but I'm told it does happen). Guess what happened over Christmas in practically every store and public space? On nearly every tv and radio channel? All over the apartments where I stayed? Round the clock Christmas celebrations, advertising, decorations etc. Granted it wasn't as overblown as how Christmas is celebrated in the west, but even in an area where by rights nobody should give a shit about Christmas and by pureflix logic they should have genuine opposition to Christmas being celebrated, even there Christmas commercialism was everywhere and there was zero public opposition to it being there. People of all faiths joined in the celebrations because Christmas is a global tradition and an excuse to get together and have fun and buy stuff for eachother, just like everywhere else in the world. I think about that a lot whenever I see rants about "the war on Christmas".

Y'know, I do sympathize with what he's going through, but I think it's telling that this story, while focusing on him, seems to neglect the fact that the rest of his family lost someone too, and maybe they're also trying to deal with it somehow. Maybe this good Christian character could, y'know, help the rest of his family cope with the loss at the same time he is instead of whining over Christmas on his lonesome. Then again, I'm probably preaching to the choir here, since any reasonable person, Christian or otherwise, is probably thinking the same thing already, while the rest are too busy trying to save Christmas from the non-existent threats surrounding it.

Holy shit. That explosion scene just took the movie from the regular tasteless pandering I'd expect from this kind of film to some whole new dimension of tasteless lunacy. I mean seriously, were the writers thinking something like: "We really want to emphasize the weight of Bob's son's heartfelt message with the fact that he never came home. The audience is probably too stupid to make that connection though." "Well then, how about have Bob somberly tell the audience that it was the last message his son recorded before he died?" "Nah. Too subtle. Hey! I've got an idea. How about we show the soldiers' sudden, horrifically violent deaths on camera as they get blown up by a fucking mortar." "Um... is this still taking place at the end of a school nativity play?" "Yes." "And... you don't see anything wrong with this? Like traumatizing an entire auditorium of families who were only there to see a school play? And making Bob look like an unhinged lunatic for showcasing his own son's violent death to the entire audience?" "Nah man, it's to like, emphasize the realness. We can tell the audiance American soldiers die for our freedom, but they won't get it unless we literally show them dying." "What does this have to do with Christmas again?" "It's, you know... they're sacrificing themselves... like what Jesus did." "And the actual audience watching the movie, you don't think they'll be shocked and appalled by this grotesque, tasteless addition to the film? That they'll find it offensively crass and exploitative, especially if they actually had family members in the military who died in combat?" "Hmm.... nah."

They want to put the "Christ" in "Christmas", yet their kids evidently have virtually little knowledge of the Bible. I think that says far more than the filmmakers had intended. And they had to take a cross down from a mission church? Reminds me of a Christian movie I happened upon once where a church had to take down a nativity scene because of those pesky secularists. A _fucking church_. Do they sincerely think that's a thing? Do they really not understand how state-church separation actually works?
@AntiFaGoat8 жыл бұрын
Ikr? Why don't you spend time with your kids and, you know, read the Bible?! I may not follow my family's religion anymore, but did a lot so I could understand the Biblical story. Every Sunday leading up to Christmas we would light a candle on a tabletop wreath and read specific passages about Jesus' birth (advent). Then we had Midnight Mass at church where we, again, read specific passages about Jesus. And then we had the Rankin-Bass specials that actually took place in the Biblical story to watch all month at home and with lots of religious Christmas songs. If your kids ain't getting enough Jesus, that's YOUR fault, not the city's.

There is a mall just a couple minutes away from where I live. In that mall, at the very center, is a gigantic fucking Christmas tree that threatens to break through the roof. It is covered in enormous ornaments the size of basketballs and bows that were taken straight off the head of Minnie Mouse. In front of this tree is a red velvet armchair where Santa sits so kids can take pictures with him. In my city's downtown area, outside the courthouse, you will still find the ten commandments standing tall and proud on two large stone tablets outside the front door. Every single radio station is overrun by Christmas carols to the point that I never want to hear the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" again. Sears has been a forest of Christmas trees since the middle of October. Fred Meyers is a mess of red and green. The Hallmark Channel and Lifetime are both pumping out new Christmas romances like there's no tomorrow, and plays their old ones on repeat twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. The food network has no less than three shows dedicated to the season, and while they may say Holiday, it's about as Christmassy as you can get including direct references to the holiday by name during the actual show itself. The entire downtown area of my city is covered in Christmas lights. Superman is constantly compared to Jesus despite being the creation of two Jewish guys in the thirties. Starbucks not only changes all their cups to a red and green motif every December, but they went ahead and plastered snowmen and sleigh bells all over it again because people bitched about it loud enough. And unless you can name me one single holiday in the United States of America which is more heavily marketed, advertised, celebrated, or more shoved in your face than Christmas, THEN THERE IS NO WAR ON CHRISTMAS!

Most of us Christians don't care when someone says "Happy Holidays" or there aren't Christmas decorations everywhere. It's honestly just the conservative ones that gripe about that. I'm a devout Christian, but I acknowledge that there are many holidays this time of year for many different faiths. It's easier to say Happy Holidays to someone because you don't know what they celebrate. Why is that such a hard concept?

When I was a kid, I always thought that "Happy Holidays" was a term to lump in Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years all into one, since they all occur within about 6 weeks of each other. I thought that the "Holiday Season" was that period of time that began on November 1st. Maybe they're pissed about Christmas being rolled into one massive holiday that celebrates overeating large Turkeys and getting shitfaced on New Years Eve, because lets face it....No one celebrates New year's day. Who knows? sometimes I think that it's not so much actual devout Christians inventing reasons to bitch, but right wing conservatives.

Money, my boy. These movies are cynical af. There's people who legitimately believe they are being prosecuted and oppressed for celebrating Christmas, and the people who make these films cash in on their human need for validation. Re-enforcing their idea that they are being prosecuted and thus resulting in the market for Christmas War propaganda films to sustain itself. It's also why normal Christian films are the way they are too.
@kristianfischer98148 жыл бұрын
Because fanatics need enemies to validate themselves, and the people who genuinely believe that white Christians are marginalized and persecuted in the US are most certainly fanatics. @talynhastime93438 жыл бұрын
Well, my similarly politically aligned friend, it's I think more about how the status quo is being questioned. The US has almost always had Christianity in some form or another. Christianity has been the predominant way of thinking and point of reference for generations and millions of people. For people to say "No, that isn't how it is. You need to stop believing like it's The Truth and the only Truth." well people get confused. What do you mean, it's not The Truth? Of course it is. It's always been The Truth to them, it's something they don't even question, like how a person doesn't question that salt is salty or the sun will rise. To be told that what you perceive to be reality is but an opinion and not the only way of life can get people defensive and mad. These are likely the same people that don't realize that Christmas is a pagan holiday or that massive spending isn't what Jesus would want. Honestly, I respect people that celebrate it as a secular holiday (a time to give gifts and spend time with family) or as a genuine reflection celebrating Jesus's birth much more than religious people that act like Christmas is the be-all, end-all determination of your worth as a human being (You DON'T BELIEVE IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT?!) or people who act like Christmas is all a sham. Oh it sort of is, but don't bring us down with your nihilism. It's the last thing we need in -20 degree weather.

Not surprising to find out that Chuck Norris praised and recommended this movie. Don't care how kick-ass he was twenty-to-thirty years ago, his approval will never be on the same level as Lloyd's! As far as where I live is concerned, I have never seen anyone get persecuted for celebrating Christmas, religious wise or just because people like the holiday season. I'm an atheist, my family doesn't adhere to any religion, and we all celebrate Christmas together. For us, its just a time to get together, have fun, watch movies, and get some free shit from each other... The points that the Snob made to put these lying, deceptive, and at times shameless filmmakers in their place was just awesome! And it was cool to see the Snob leave his review room to prove these fuckers wrong! Lastly... Is it just me, or does this movie look like it was filmed after someone rubbed cum on the camera lens? And does anyone else this that jailhouse Jesus looks like Willie Nelson?
@graemesmith67213 жыл бұрын
That's because nobody in America is persecuted for celebrating Christmas. The First Amendment is crystal clear on this point. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." It's a non-issue, invented by conservative propagandists to foment outrage among ignorant yokels, and a smokescreen for what they're really angry about (abortion, gay marriage, evolution, and that white males can no longer grope women's asses and call black men "boys").

I actually bought it all until I was about 10. Then slowly I just started giving up over and over. What was worse is my dad was friends with literally all the hellfighters so I had to act like I liked this movie. For the sake of my dad's job, I had to pretend to like this movie. And my parents don't understand why I absolutely hate going to church now. A) most the people there are petty, rude, and take advantage of you. ESPECIALLY if your dad is a pastor B) everything is run by fear. Everything. I'm still Christian but I refuse to believe in fear tactics. I refuse to believe that today's church where people are so full of hate and closed-mindedness is what was wanted from the original christians. The Puritans actually felt that the Church of England (which is linked to the state through the monarch who leads both) had not moved far enough away from several key Catholic practices. They weren't interested in separating church and state, they were interested in reforming a church that was closely linked to the monarchy. Coincidentally, one of the practices that several Puritan groups decried was Christmas because of its links to the Catholic Church and pre-Christian traditions.

If were going to celebrate a famous Italian why not Leonardo Da Vinci; he's a famous artist, inventor and best of all was not imprisoned for his heinous crimes against the Natives of Hispaniola by the Queen of Spain.

I've never understood Columbus day. He didn't discover America, he wasn't looking for it, and that wasn't even his real name.

And we can even get the progressive vote on it because Leonardo Da Vinci may have been gay.

It really is extremely telling that the white biker gang who got into a literal gunfight doesn't make this guy blink but his white grandson doing a minorly expressive handshake makes him worry about those evil black LA gangs influencing him negatively. It's that subconscious "but I'm not a racist" racism that these types of people sometimes have.

Why do they always have to look like something that would air on Lifetime/Hallmark Channel?
@MarquisLeary348 жыл бұрын
Because the politics they're trying to push are more important than making a competent movie.

Most Lifetime and Hallmark channel Christmas TV movies are magic realism and romantic films. And sometimes comedy.

***** Like Lifetime and Hallmark on a budget? I will say even Lifetime and Hallmark will, occasionally, get real actors. They might be of the "I thought they were dead" variety but they are actual actors.

If they really wanted to make a 'saving-Christmas' movie, they should have had them saving Christmas from commercialism. Did they ever even talk about what Christmas is supposed to be about?
@MarquisLeary348 жыл бұрын
Because then they'd have to slag on capitalism and it's gas source, consumerism. You think they'll risk looking like SOCIALISTS?
@nathaniellevesque27828 жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, the movie titled, "Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas" preaches that commercialism and materialism is a good thing.
@jamesbiggs83978 жыл бұрын
Nathaniel Levesque It is, but it it also makes people petty. That being said, I agree with Mr. Jones that Kirk Cameron saves Christmas isn't good.

Brad has been snarky, critical, and preachy regarding other views for a VERY long time, even as the Snob (sometimes ESPECIALLY as the Snob). He just happened to be directing that snark at other people's views on film. Politics and religion are equally fair game, it's the internet after all.

C Wilson Where does it say that?
@coreyweber23408 жыл бұрын
C Wilson U.S. Code Title 10, Subtitle A, Part II, Chapter 45, S772: “While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force.”

So...wait a minute, you can portray your armed forces in a film provided you don't discredit them? So it's illegal to make a film that shows how much we kicked your arses when you tried to invade Canada?

I really had to laugh at the protagonist's invoking Plymouth Rock. Like, hello! The Pilgrim Separatists (and the Puritans who later settled in Salem) detested Christmas for being too Pagan and too Catholic! One of their biggest issues with the Anglican Church was its push heighten Christmas festivities. They even outlawed Christmas celebrations until 1681! But aside from that and all the other things wrong with this piece of mindless fluff, I want to personally thank Brad. I've been watching this show for a year now. It has given me endless hours of entertainment and has gotten me through some rough patches. It means so much to me. Bless you for doing it! You are a comedic genius!

How long have these people not noticed that baby jesus isn't the only thing celebrated at christmas? -family bonding -presents -changing of the season -helping people -feasting -that warm fuzzy feeling that makes doug walker turn into a singing, dancing maniac It's like suddenly the wheels started turning in their heads and they realised christmas can be a lovely time with or without religion. Oh the horror..?

The "Winter Space Odyssey" play reminds me of a sci-fi version of the Bible I thought up a while back. Adam and Eve are actually genetic experiments created by an advanced alien race, miracles are actually acts of alien technology, and so on. I called it the "Sci-Fible"
