The Sassanid Empire was weakened after the war of 602-628 against the Byzantine Empire bit.ly/2BLg5lV and their defeats at al-Qadisiyyah bit.ly/2QwTBvL and Nahavand at the hands of the Caliphate forces effectively ended the empire. Still, representatives of the House of Sasan continued resisting and found allies - the Tang dynasty in China.

Rostram1369, The Sassanid empire =/= the persian emprie. I am talking about what is colloquially called THE Persian empire, ie: the Achaemenid/Persian Empire that was ultimately put in power by Cyrus the great, and overthrown by Alexander the Great. They seemed to have a great C&C infrastructure with their various governors, were handling rebellions well, still had a lot of wealth, troops, and people loyal to them in a lot of the more important places. They seemed to be just overthrown from without by Alexander. And of course, the inability to conquer greece in the centuries prior, but that still wasn't from within.

I'm not normally one to get very emotionally invested in stories from ancient history, as much as I enjoy them, but Peroz III's story really got me. @Weasel Arabic culture also received a lot of persianisation over the centuries, cultural exchange is a natural and unavoidable occurrence and it often goes both ways. You can't expect a culture to stay the same and remain uninfluenced by it's neighbours forever, that would be ridiculous. Cultures influence eachother, that's just how it works.

Ironically enough the Sassanids had no one to blame for this but themselves. A few decades prior to the big arab expansions they had destroyed one of their client states, the arab Lachmids, who had functioned as a reliable bastion against any potential attacks from the arabian peninsula or the South-west in general. This caused a power-vacuum that the new direct persian administration was unable to fill, which gave the newly united arab tribes the perfect opening to strike.

Persia/Iran is an interesting country. It's like the gate to east for the westerners, and the gate to west for the easterners, also the gate to the Central Asian steppes (north), and India in the south(-east). In a way it's in a similar position as Russia, and those nations have some sympathies towards each other. And the core country of Persia is mostly protected by mountains, it's like a natural fortess. A 'plug' between Asia and Middle-East/Europe. Just think: there was only one country between Rome and China - Persia. I think Persia is there to stop any one empire to grow too big. If Rome and China united - they would have ruled the whole world eventually. Or if they ended up in a power struggle, like empires often do, they would have burned the world.

Amazing video! Slight mistake at 1:43, the Shahnameh ("Book of Kings") was written by the persian poet Ferdowsi, around the year 1000 CE, some 500 years after Khosrau I. It was written to preserve the memory of their persian ancestors in the midst of cultural displacement by the Arabs. The book which Khosrau had commissioned was the Khwaday-Namag, ("Book of Lords"). It was written to preserve their own history, and may have even recorded information about the Achaemenids and Parthians, but this book is now lost. By the time of Ferdowsi, the Persians did not know too much about their ancient ancestors, and it was before the works of Herodotus had been translated to Farsi. So during that time, the Persian scholars would rely on Jewish sources such as the Old Testament to gleam whatever information they could about their ancient ancestors such as Cyrus, Darius, and Xerxes. They had even forgotten that the ruins of Persepolis was built by Darius, and so they called it Takhte-e-Jamshid, which means "Throne of Jamshid", attributing it to an ancient mythological king by the name of Jamshid. It was only in the last 150 years through archaeology and the deciphering of cuneiform that the truth started to come out.

A small group of these fleeing sassanids arrived at Gujarat in India and formed the parsi community of India. There's a beautiful story regarding their migration. When the parsi ship reached Gujarat and asked for refuge, the local king refused it stating that there enough cultures present and one more would only bring more problem to him. The parsees promised that they will never conquer nor convert any native people for which the king agreed and gave them refuge. The parsees kept their word even after so many generations and never have they conquered nor tried to convert the natives to their religion. Almost 25% of India's millionaires are parsees. TJ D. There wasn’t a substantial migration when the Arabs first conquered Persia, they were treated well and were the dominant religion in the area even centuries after the Muslim conquests because they were allowed to practice freely. The real migration happened during Safavid rule, in which the ruler tried to forcefully convert all Iranians to Shia Islam, including the Sunni Muslims and Parsi, which lead to the migration of many sunnis and parsis in Iran to India/Pakistan/Mughal Empire. The Shi’a rulers eventually converted everyone, radicalized their sect, destroyed many Sunni pacifist thoughts, desecrated the graves of many important scholars, and began to spread their idea further. Traditionally speaking, early muslim encounters were peaceful and motivated by morals when in contact with other cultures. For example, when Hindus were being oppressed by one of their rulers, they called for help from the caliphate and were sent garrisons to aid them. In the conquered areas, the natives kept their cultures and religions unless they liked Islam, and were given legal rights.

William Spencer Islam, continuity and change in the modern world, By John Obert Voll Masashi Haneda, Emigration of Iranian Elites to India during the 16-18th centuries, Cahiers d’Asie centrale Another large migration period was during the 10th century, which was prior to the Safavids and still under Sunni caliphate rule. This migration occurred after the rightly guided caliphs, and thus is not take into account when assessing the narrative of parsis fleeing from early Muslims. Although Some did flee during the initial conquest, the real migration began in the 9th-10th centuries when the Muslims had infighting and weren’t so rightly guided anymore. I would recommend reading up on the accounts of the ulema for a good picture on what was happening as well.

Why was Roman Britain not part of the empire in your map of the entirely united Roman Empire? It was a province until 410 AD, long after the Sasanian Battle of Hormozdgan in Iran in 224 AD. And for that matter you misspelled it as "Hormozgan" without a "d", which I don't think is some alternate spelling.

Also, at 7:00 you show several sculptures of the Chinese Tang dynasty when talking about Sasanian Persians, but these statues, while probably showing people of the Zoroastrian faith, were Sogdians (an Eastern Iranian group) who weren't necessarily under Sasanian rule. In fact, at least one of those sculptures is a Sogdian from the 8th century, a considerable while after the Sasanian Empire had fallen to the Rashidun Caliphate.

The islamic conquest of persia surely end the persian heritage as superpower, however, during abassids dynasty, the persian conquer the arab through their culture. Most of the grand viziers of Abbasids were persians(Barmaki family), as well as the caliphs who had more persian blood despite being descended from arab(intermarriege and all).Plus it worth to note that earlier muslims are not as race based and nationalists as our modern world... The Persian regained their rule after the end of persianized turk(safavid dynasty) through several dynasties: ashfarid, qajar, etc However, in Islam, it has been told in a hadeeth(i forgot the exact narration-please refer by urselves b4 requote mine), that if knowledge is in stars, than the persian will/can take it. This foresaw the golden age of islam(8-13 century b4 the coming of mongol) which mostly happened in the heartland of persia aka iran... And it worth to note that almost all of the scholars at that time despite having arabic name were actually persians.(Avicenna,Khwarizm, if you made a list, there will be no end) This comment is meant to console some dumb and blind persians about their history. Personally, i think the persians heritage in terms of knolwedge is far more impressive to the world rather than mighty conquests and huge empire(This come from a war and strategies fan like me). A pen is far respectful than a thousand sword. Hence, stop blaming Arab or Islam and act like a kid, being proud as something like culture and old religion when you had something far more valuable. Even today, Iran is still one of the best in mathematics. Its easier to accept the history and islam and be proud that islam has changed your tyrannical oppression towards the people of the empire into the greatest scholar throughout the entire history of mankind civilisation...... P/s: i would like to note that both persia and rome suffer great territory loses not because their empire already exhaust, i call that bullshit, imo its because the people didnt support the empire and readily accept islamic forces as they saw them as liberators from high taxes

In previous years, Russian scientists discovered Tang Dynasty stone steles on Sakhalin Island to prove that Sakhalin Island was the territory of the Tang Dynasty. The relevant records of the Tang Dynasty also stated that when soldiers marched far away, they saw colorful lights (aurora) in the sky. This shows that the Tang Dynasty reached North Siberia as far as the Tang Dynasty, and the territory of the Tang Dynasty in the video is indeed marked as small.

But they refuse politely and the emperor kept the letter (i think the letter still exist till this day). Yedegerd on the hand ripped the letter apart with full rage. I am not surprised that the Zoroastrian Sassanids tolerated Christianity since Zoroastrianism is one of the most enlightened and modernish religions out there, as it was even the first and only religion to oppose slavery outright. Yet somehow a lot of other religions that came much later than Zoroastrianism tended to be very backward and close minded comparatively

Well the Zoroastrianism the Sassanids practisced was a bit different from the original teachings of Ašu Zartošt (Zoroaster). It was pretty mixed up with Christianity and highly politicalized by the Sassanid Clergy to strenghen the rule of the 'divine' Emperors & to create a national unity among the citizens of the Empire. For example Original Zoroastrianism didn't have concepts such as 'Heaven & Hell', 'Angels', etc. Zoroaster was more of a Philosoph than a religious Zealot. If you want pure Zoroastrianism only read the Gathas the rest is pretty much made up by later followers of Zoroaster. PS: I am not saying it's good or bad. I'm just stating facts.

Sure, I guess the fate of the remaining Palaiologos emperor's after 1453 was similar, but the Byzantine empire had been on death's door for a while. The Sassanids still had a large empire and in the space of 2 decades, it was all gone. They became kings without a kingdom.

Medicus Cessatura It is obvious that taking Ctesiphon really didn’t have as much of an effect on the Empire’s as you may think other than the symbolic effect and the loot, as the Parthian and Sassanid Empires realistically had other capitals closer to the Iranian heartland. The Parthians you can argue were too feudalistic and lacked the infrastructure or motivation to do so, especially toward the last century of the Empire. Furthermore, the sackings of Ctesiphon MOSTLY happened within a certain period of instability toward the ending of the Parthian Empire and the early stages of the Sassanid Empire.
@Fman0909
@Fman0909 5 жыл бұрын
@@KingsandGenerals That's correct. It was chosen as a capital by the Parthians then the Sassanids followed. More grain and gold taxation was available to them from the surrounding regions. The Shahs didn't really see the capital in the same sense as other civilizations saw it. Since their dominion was so vast, they used to move alot with their court from province to province. Ctesiphon (Al Madain) was 170km north of Al Hirah (Lakhmid Capital)
