That really doesn't to the 970 though, it's just fast enough to still be "fine" for 1080p but the problem is the crippled VRAM. You really can't get away with less than 6gb these days. 3.5gb is not enough. GTX 980 is the lowest I would go for budget. I don't see anybody singing the 970's praises honestly no one ever does for anything by nVidia that's below a 80ti or at minimum 80 because their VRAM sucks, the support sucks, usually all the lower cards go tits up. Apparently their older GPUs also fail way more frequently than Radeons. Sometimes this counts with even high GPU, the 780ti is completely worthless these days for a reason, it's not about the driver support, it's the 3gb of VRAM making it completely useless. Not supporting Vulkan just makes it worse.

As Tech pointed out, the 3700X is similar to the CPU cores in the current consoles. Some new games are already getting very heavy and we see console games that are forced to run in 30 fps modes again and hitting CPU bottlenecks (e.g. Plague Tale Requiem). For new PC games where we want higher frame rates, or we want to dabble in new technologies, we need more. On the other hand if you go back to your Steam backlog, it will run all kinds of games great!

The Ryzen 7 3700X was a formidable 8C/16T CPU when it came out. I have one in my system from January 2020 to present. It started life paired with an RTX 3070 and more recently, an RX 6800 XT (pairs well with both cards). It's 2023 now and the CPU still feels and performs really well. Buttery smooth desktop use, quick simple video edits and 1080p gaming. At 65W TDP, it runs quite cool too, albeit slightly undervolted - doesn't go above 70°C during renders/stress test and 60°C during gaming. I use a Deepcool AK400 tower cooler. For my use-case, I think it will give me another year or two before requiring an upgrade to something snappier. Things to note though. I usually play Overwatch 1080p with a constant 240fps but whenever I run OBS to stream some gameplay to my Twitch, the fps will drop to between 170-200. Not noticeable but something to be aware of. Overall, it's still a great performing CPU in 2023, not for the most intense productivity work (whereby I'll use my other PC with a 13600K in it) but it's perfectly fit for gaming.

I had used an I7 3770k for like 7-8 years till I had upgraded to a 3700x build back in late 2019. I used it for about 2 years then sold it to my friend which he still uses and is happy about. It was a great cpu. Snappy as hell with dual rank ddr4 and an nvme ssd. It was also great for gaming in 1440p for me and I'm sure it'll not bottleneck unless like you go with 4080 or something with 1440p resolution for AAA titles. And as for competitive gaming, unless like you have a 360-500hz monitor and you want to squeeze every single frame that monitor can show, 200-300fps in competitive titles is pretty enough even for very skilled competitive gamers. While I can't say it'll be okay to pair it with a 4090 and get all the fps even with maxed out settings and RT on, it'll still be very playable and I'm not sure who in their right minds would pair a 3700x with the latest gen top tier gpu.

the thing is... most new games really dont look that impressive, no noticable difference in graphics anymore while being horribly unoptimized, they're just rushed tools for money and making people think they need to buy $4000 nuclear powerplant eater computers... ryzen 7 3700x and rx 6750xt runs any game that is developed with more than 5% thought into it at 1440p 90-144+ fps on ultra.. I don't see the need to upgrade for quite a while and I'm not throwing away a perfectly fine cpu. If anything, if you're looking for a new system, then you probably shouldn't buy a ryzen 7 3700x just because almost everything on the market will be a used 3700x, while you could spend slightly more or far less the price of a 3700x for a brand new better and recent cpu.

Not planning on upgrading my 3700x for a year most probably 2, don't have many issues with new releases (so far) that are the fault of the CPU, just bad programming mainly. I game at 1440p paired with an RTX 3080.

Unless you need to sell parts to upgrade, why not just keep them? Even when too slow to run new games, a 3700X will be fantastic as an office or lounge PC! I run a 2700X in the lounge with a 970 card and it's great. Typing on it now. Running through a 4K TV.

I worked on a 4790k build this weekend (new cooler+ case, OC'd the ram and chip, all that jazz) and its crazy how not bad it is. I think the 3700X will end up that way in 10 years. Is it great... of course not... but if all you play is City Skylines, Sims, Civ 5 and 6, etc... it's more than adequate. Would I be happy with either? No, but everyone ain't me.

while going from 3700x to 5700x is a nice jump, i think going to 5800x3d instead is much better upgrade which will definitely make a noticeable difference and will serve as last hurrah for am4 platform very well, plus 5800x3d doesnt really care about your ram speed so if you have slow ram it wont matter with that combo. If you have 5700x already i would advise skipping 5800x3d though. Wait few more years and upgrade whole platform there is a difference for sure but it wont make games from unplayable to fully playable, smooth.

Tech, the Zen2 CPU-s have 8-core CCX-es like Zen3, the 3700x should be 8 cores in a single complex.
@ByteSizeTech Жыл бұрын
You should double check that, because they don't... a 3700X is a pair of 4 core chips glued via IF.
@marijanovic191x7 Жыл бұрын
@@ByteSizeTech sorry, I was wrong, had to refresh my knowledge and you are right. I confused the CCD and CCX, the 3700X does use two 4-core CCX on one CCD and those communicate through the infinity fabric. On a 3900x/3950x there are 2 CCD. The data fabric is used to communicate between the CCD and the IO die (CCIo or how it's called). Zen and Zen+ had a single CCX per CCD, and that's what I got confused about.

lol detail setting have nothing to do with CPU performance, lowering details is to remove GPU bottleneck, there are some settings than can help with CPU performance but very few, that's why the CPU is more important than the GPU in a long time build, you will change the GPU a few times anyway but if you get a good CPU it will last you years and many GPU upgrades, still using a 9900k and no plans to upgrade till Lunar lake.
