Tech thank you for the sage advice! With your advice i will most likely wait for am6 at launch given that makes the most sense for me at my current financial situation; it gives me time to save. Your videos and wisdom have been of great use on my journey in the pc gaming/content creation world and i say thank you many times over Sir!

5:39 - "If you're going to upgrade....UPGRADE!" Agreed! If you're going to spend $500 on a 3-year old CPU, you might as well spend that $500 towards something current and has an upgrade path. You can still liquidate your AM4 guts (CPU + mobo + RAM) towards a new build to mitigate the cost.

Fully agree with the "5900X is a nice chip" part Upgraded from a 3900X to a 5900X 2 years ago for 200EUR, happy with it since, I'm only gaming, browsing and doing office-type work It can even hold my 7900XTX at UWQHD with (close to!) no bottleneck in games ^^

@@C0d0ps No I don't stream, I rarely record some gameplay but I work with multiple containers and multiple virtual environments, those take a lot of RAM, the CPU plays it's part by making everything so smooth to work with while having 20+ things in the taskbar. I have found out that a ratio of 4gb-8gb ram per thread makes things run really smooth.

honestly i could approve upgrading from 5600x to 5900x/5950x/5800x3d its good enough jump in demanding games. 5600x is enough for the most part, but its getting a bit overwhelmed in games such as The last of us, spiderman remastered + RT, forspoken (i know bad game), cyberpunk 2077, etc.

Great video topic. I've contemplated jumping to the 5950x just because I run a lot of VM's and the extra cores would be useful, but I've owned the 5900x since launch and can't think of a truly compelling reason to upgrade, at least anytime soon. I've never considered the 5900x or 5950x to be processors targeted at "casual" users with modest workloads. My primary use-case involves running business applications in a type 2 hypervisor, and audio/video encoding. Even in 2023 I still think 5900x holds its own. Chasing after the latest, greatest technology endlessly is an expensive endeavor, especially when you're talking about a whole new platform and the jump to DDR5. It's obviously a personal decision and depends how you're using the computer. Since I'm running 128GB of RAM, a top tier X570 board (for its time), and a custom water loop, the cost of upgrade would be non-trivial. When it stops doing what I need it to do, I'll make the jump. For the time being, I still think it's a lot of computer for the average user (again, particularly when coupled with a ton of high-speed storage, boatloads of RAM, and a custom loop). I may entertain upgrading from the RTX 3080 to a newer GPU, but that's hard to justify when I'm (at best) a very casual gamer-- something that can also wait for the next chipset/platform.

I got my 5900x new build in summer 2021 the extra cost to go 5950x is quite a bit back then. Figure if I don't need the 4 extra cores for a few years, by the time I need it might as will go with a whole new build on a new platform.

Ben having my 5950x since launch. It still WOWs me even today coming from an 8700k prior. I have it paired with a 7900xtx. I don't like the GPU much but the 5950x pushes strong at 1440p high refresh and at 4k it's really GPU bound. doing all this while streaming KZbin running a Minecraft server and playing Minecraft on the same system or playing a whole different game on it like cyberpunk like I did in the past. And I didn't lose a single FPS while doing it. and everything ran as if it was the only thing running.... smooth. Can't imagine what it would have been like to do all that on my old 8700k lol power of the 16 cores. I suspect I won't need an upgrade tell the Ryzen 9000 or 100000 wherever they call it. And even then, it will be the top end again. I just feel buying the top end saves me money in the long run idk.

"If you are going to upgrade.... upgrade." This phrase made me buy the R9 5900X after considering cheaper option like a 5700X or a 5800X. I am coming from a R5 3600 so yeah, pretty big upgrade. I both 5950x & 5900x, it was by very first build. I do music 🎶 production and I had no clue what I was doing. My 5900x worked perfectly but that greediness for more speed made me purchase the 5950x, i learned a valuable lesson. I didn't properly cool it, I had no idea it was a beast and I needed months of more study to maintence it correctly. Long story short I now have the 7900x and I will not upgrade. wise enough know that i don't have michael jordan but goddammit I got scottie pippen who is a hall of famer, just 10-20% slower and is the number option on any other team. I just maxxed out my 5900X with a 5950X. The PC has 128GB of RAM, 6TB storage (1 - 1TB SATA Boot Drive, 1 - 1TB NVME Game Drive, and a 4TB HDD Storage Drive), an RTX 4070 Ti Super, on an ASUS TUF Gaming mATX motherboard. I still undervolted with an automatic negative offset and locked the CPU Core Clock to 4.5 GHz. This setup is more of a beast than with the 5900X, with quicker response times in Halo Infinite. This one is the keeper I'm going to have for the next 10 years, and still running Windows 10 22H2!! The AM5 platform has way too many problems for me to even think about building a PC on that platform. Now, I've heard rumblings of a 5950X3D chip coming out...

I've upgraded from r5 3600 to r5 5600x once it launched, it was cooler, more power efficient and more powerful in general as I use it in sffpc. Now I am looking for upgrade to max out my current build without breaking the bank and can't justify buying a new platform as am5 itx mobo itself costs as much as 5900x or 5800x3d where I live. I am both gaming and working on my pc (doing some programming stuff, running dockers in wsl2 alongside with 2 to 4 browsers in parallel with tons of tabs in them), not sure whether my workloads makes sense on 5900x, but whenever I look at 5800x3d I see only 2c/4t for same price as 5900x, which only would be better in some games and worse in day to day tasks. I love to keep everything open and not think about lack of resources (that's why I don't use my working laptop with i7 and 16gb or ram as it quickly gets out of memory and really hot by just doing some Zoom/Meet calls) So, any suggestions whether go 5900x or 5800x3d? PS: my current specs are - Gigabyte X570I Aorus Pro WiFi, R5 5600x, 32GB of RAM and RX6700XT running in Iqunix ZX-1 with Corsair SF650 Gold PSU

I have a 5900x regretted not going that last step up. But I had a computer savvy kid with me, and he and the Microcenter sales guy agreed that I didn't need it. They were technically correct, however, I am now PC enthusiast adjacent and would just like to just see this PC maxed out. Still, your advice is correct. Probably not going to upgrade to 5950x. But there is one possible way I might justify it. I have another son who could use an upgraded PC and I could help him build one with the current chip and upgrade mine. So just donate it to him. We'll see. He might just want something newer and that's fine too. Next build I will go all in if I am that close anyway. Like you said, the highest components tend to hold value and stay relevant longer.

5950x was $292 on Prime day, seller was Amazon. I think under $300 new is good if you're already on am4 and wanna wait out am5 for am6 or wanna max your system out and get some more years out of it before doing a all new build. Still a solid processor for work and multitasking. If gaming is your focus tho or it's all you do with your computer than an x3d is what you want.

Just saw this today. I have a 5900X and a 3080ti. The primary reason I went crazy on ram is cause I’m a 3D animation student and I constantly have use use MAYA, Photoshop, and Substance Painter 3D. Thankfully, RAM has really dropped in price so the hit wasn’t too big. I graduate in 2026 and unless I need to, I can’t see me upgrading till then. I mean, it would be nice to have the 5950x /3090 combo (specially for the VRAM) but unless I can find those components at rock bottom prices, I think I’ll be just fine.

Good advise. Most people that use their computers did not buy their hardware for what they want to do. They buy them by the sticker and think they can do what they want them to do. Truth is nobody is going to game at 4k or 8k at 500 fps. Same with streaming and even content creation due to bottlenecks. Example I could make 4k videos and put them up on KZbin or Rumble but their is more to it than just making the video. Uploading times. So all the hardware in the world is not going to get me past what my ISP speeds are. Even with that the sites slow you down as well. I do not run a business is that all really worth paying extra money for hardware I really can not use? I know it is fun to build. I get that. Realism sets in at some point. Otherwise called experience.

I'm planning to build new PC with budget $1500 for 1080p AAA new game. 5700x RTX 4070 64gb RAM are these good enough for max out 1080p recording and streaming? my monitor 1080p 144hz and planning for another 1080p 240hz if I have the budget. I dont want 1440p because of the monitor price and 1080p give me more future proof

That is a good build, with the amount of ram you will not have to worry about games and background tasks. You may even be able to do 1440p gaming.

If you're making money with your computer for a living, you should just get the best every GPU generation, and sell your old stuff. Your system will make profit and justify the cost. CPUs release basically annually, but GPUs are on a two year release. So, you should've bought a 7950X and 4090, skip the 80xx series, then buy a 9950X and 5090. If you're using your computer for your primary job, you will make way more than the $4000-6000 it costs to build that computer.

got 5700g for £255 2022 as cheapest newish gpu fail safe chip- could do stuff my 3770 4c 8t would be stomped at. 5900x is now £250 and 5700x3d £200. already on a 5000 cpu so a 5900x would increase my cores, cache and clock speed. i mostly like web browsing and gaming but wont spend highter than £300 on a gpu or at least i won't go lower than 12vram and took the win of the unintended bakers dozen nvidia had to do for the early 3060s (made it cheaper than amd's 12gb). point being no cpu will bottleneck my gpu and i like to run sims every so often for fun. i know 16mb cache is pathetic and likely the reason my system struggles with higher sim settings or ridged body numbers. the x3d only offers cache increase but its massive and might be better for sims and gaming overall but price vs what i'm getting the 5900x is the most base covering..... i'd love to see the x3d do some blender sims and see how much more it can handle before the software gui freezes just to chew through it all!

"Hold its value"... so my old Athlon XP 3200+ has still got its value? 😜 That's obviously being a bit silly but... I am sure it still has quite some value. For a person like LGR who tends to build period accurate builds it might be a hard but definitely desired find if it was put up for sale. It was the very best on that platform before AMD went Athlon 64 on a new socket. That said... I am in the same boat I suppose. AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, Noctua NH-D14, Corsair Vengeance 64GB, Asus Rog Strix X570-E Gaming, Evga RTX2080 XC Ultra, plus a couple of SSDs of WD and Samsung and an old OCZ Vertex 4, and two Samsung F1 1TB HDDs. All in an old school Coolermaster HAF-X case that might need an upgrade if the 4090 size graphics cards is here to stay. Personally I have been contemplating just getting the 5950X and maybe maxing out the RAM capacity to 128GB. In the end I always go over the benchmarks and price point and put it next to my use case, and for me it isn't worth it.

Lga 1700 is a dead platform same as am4. The way I see it I would much rather give 500 dollars for a am5 mb and have the choice to upgrade cpu later down the road than give 450 dollars for a lga 1700 that only has either 12900k or 13900k as upgrade path. If only Intel would extend there motherboard past two generations there would be more reasons to recommend Intel over amd they are both great cpu manufacturers but Intel will leave you hanging they did me with z490 10900k I thought well I'll have 11900k to upgrade too well I'm not going 10 core cpu back to 8 core with only a small IPC uplift
