Metric system isnt hard to grasp. Its based in round numbers in multiples or divisions of 10. Here's some references to get you started : Distance -> 1 kilometer (km) is 1000 meters (m) ... each meter is 100 centimeters (cm) and each centimeter is 10 milimeters (mm), as you possibly already seem in forener made measuring tapes and rulers. 1 mile is almost roughly 2km. Weight-> 1 kilogram (Kg) is 1000 grams ... each gram (g) is 100 centigrams (cg) and each centigram is 10 miligrams (mg), as you probly already saw in some farmacy produts labels. Those packs of drugs you see in movies are refered as ''kilo'' yet they seem to be away to big for being just 1 precise one, in my opinion. Volume-> 1 liter (l) is 1000 centiliters (cl) ... Your macdonald's big drink cups should have about a litter of soda in them, give or take a few centiliters. See the pattern there? Always add or remove zeros to convert from one scale of measure to the next or previous one. Here's a page that if you care to translate to english will do a far better job at making you catch up to the world in no time : www.todoestudo.com.br/quimica/unidades-de-medida

Spent two months studying in Spain/Italy this summer- both countries have much stricter regulations on the amount of sugars that can be added than we do here. It was the healthiest I've been in years. Came back to the US; very quickly, many symptoms returned. Obviously this hardly qualifies as a scientific study, but I would be shocked if the reduced sugar consumption wasn't at least related.
@matthewmuir88846 жыл бұрын
I'm Canadian. For us, the sugar problem isn't as bad, but is still pretty bad. When I was in Germany, I felt a lot healthier than I had in some time. It's probably a number of factors: less sugar, less gluten, the crops aren't sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, and the food is organic as standard, unlike in North America where the genetically modified garbage is standard. Quick warning for anyone thinking of visiting Germany: almost all the water is sparkling water.
@frantisekfilandr70145 жыл бұрын
@@matthewmuir8884 Actually, we use herbicides and pesticides in Europe is well, THAT is standard and it massively increases crop yields so its basically essential all over the world, you had pink glasses when in Germany it seems. Organic is still that "more expensive luxurious variant of food" here. Also, genetically modified food is great, there is nothing wrong with it and I am dissapointed EU is banning it. Everything we grow is genetically modified, only by selective breeding, which is basically the same thing as when you do it through molecular biology methods, just random. However, we do eat MUCH less sugar and fat overall. When I went to US, I was disgusted how sweet everything was. EVERYTHING. Even bread. And body pH and brain does of course react to it.

I am very often in italy, so i know what "authentic italian cuisine" is like. Just a hint, deep fried lasagna isn't and original spaghetti carbonara does not involve any form of cream. Another fact is that especially in the us, everything is packed with HFCS. Another thing is, that the food industry always try to convince you that fat is the bad ingredient. But it's mostly the huge amount of sugar that messes you up. I myself like drinking a coke or anything when having a meal, but i don't drink 2l of it a day, as many people in north america do.

@declanlune952 жыл бұрын
The big thing to keep in mind is that grams are a measurement of weight, whereas teaspoons, tablespoons, and cups are approximate measure of volume. And Volume is the measure of how much space is being taken up. For example, when pulling espresso shots, they are always weighed in grams. This is because of the fact that the weight and thickness of the crema on top can vary widely from shot to shot. Measuring in grams solves this problem because you account for the total amount of liquid in the cup, rather than telling you how much space the liquid takes up. The same thing applies to the nutrition index, you are accounting for the total weight of each ingredient in the food, rather than how much space the ingredient is taking up.
@lnt305 Жыл бұрын

@Maxx Kroes Sugar is a necessary supplement. But the amount that we actually need each day is incredibly low. "too much sugar" is a threshold that's easily, VERY easily reached especially because sugar is in so much of our processed foods. For many it would seem almost impossible to avoid. Even in food that naturally contains sugar, such as fruits, you have to be wary of your intake. Just because sugar is so common in the western foodmarket, doesn't mean it's healthy or harmless. People are quickly educating themselves on the dangers of sugar though, and some are even calling sugar the "modern tobacco" because of how tobacco used to be normal and even considered healthy in some cases. It's very important to be wary of your food intake and what exactly you are putting in your body. It's the most impactful factor for the development of our bodies.

The first three weeks was a nightmare. I was hungry and agitated all the time. I countered this by remaining occupied and eating larger helpings of vegetables at dinner. (I'm a dad, so I sometimes eat "the rest".) Took a while to come up with a good meal rotation, but I was able to nail it down and stick to it. I figured out I was originally eating 200-350 carbs a day. Somehow, I only weighed 200 pounds. I'm now in the 11th month of this new life, and I'm glad I stuck to it. I'm 37 and weigh 160. I don't have the knee/joint pain I was used to dealing with after softball. I agree with all you said. I also learned that much of the time, I'm not hungry; I'm bored. I am also now sugar sensitive. The fats aren't the problem, the sugar is. This lady at 3:45 was adding her own stuff to the reporting because we don't have a problem consuming fat in our diets. Doctors won't tell you to lower your fat intake unless you have an actual medical problem. Fat is important for brain and nerve functioning as well as keeping you full. Your brain is wrapped in fat to help insulate it so it can conduct electricity better, same with your nerves. A low fat diet is not good for the brain and it's definitely not good for losing weight. A low fat diet also makes you eat more carbohydrates because fat fills you up and without fat, you're going to be more hungry. And since you don't eat enough fat, you're going to eat more carbohydrates. So you're in turn replacing that fat your body needs and craves with carbohydrates, thus increasing your blood sugar. If you want to lose body fat, you should eat more fat in the morning and save the carbohydrates for later in the day. 2 eggs in the morning is much better for helping you lose weight than some cereal and toast. Seriously, do this. Eat 2 hard boiled eggs in the morning and see how full you are for a few hours afterwards. Then the next day eat a bowl of cereal and a piece of toast and see how quickly you become hungry. And the cereal and toast have more calories than the eggs. This whole war on fat pisses me off because people don't know what the fuck they're talking about. They hear the word fat and think it's all the same. The fat you eat doesn't convert over to belly fat. That's fucking dumb. You get belly fat from eating more calories than you burn off. And you need to eat more carbohydrates than fat to feel fuller. But I'm talking about losing weight. I probably should have clarified that. If you're a healthy weight then eat all the carbs you want for breakfast, you won't have a problem. As long as you get the recommended 150 minutes a week on the treadmill then you're fine. And yes, the major medical associations like the heart and lung associations recommend 150 minutes a week, so get going. Don't believe me? Google "150 minutes a week"
@Supermanohman10 жыл бұрын
And I know what I'm talking about because I've been following the advice of a dietician for 8 months and I went from ~400 lbs to 331.56 lbs. 70 pounds in 8 months. That's about 9 pounds a month give or take. And yeah, I count the .56 lbs because I'm a fucking baller. And what's even weirder is that when I was 400 lbs I had depression like a mofo. I was so depressed that I checked myself into a hospital. After that, I lost a bunch of weight every month and now I'm in graduate school and writing stories that I hope to be published some day. So if you ever see a story about a futuristic robot protecting a little girl after climate change has messed up society, that's me.

4 grams = 1 teaspoon, there now you know how to convert grams to teaspoons
@TheHomelessCripple8 жыл бұрын
Except grams are a measurement of mass and teaspoons are a measure of volume, so no, there is no direct conversion, just like weight and mass are not the same thing (a common misconception by uneducated americans who don't understand science), as weight is the force of gravity acting on a mass and mass is a measure of how much 'stuff' is in a 'thing'. The mass in the teaspoon will be dependent upon the atomic weight and density of the substance being measured, as well as the temperature. In other words, 1 teaspoon of water(with a density of 1g/cm^3) at room temp will not have the same mass as a teaspoon of sugar(with a density of 1.56g/cm^3), as the sugar is more dense, so there is more 'stuff' in that volume, meaning it will have a higher mass.

A teaspoon is a volume, a gram is a weight. When was the last time you measured the weight of sugar you put in a cup of coffee? So if you wanted to know how much sugar you are putting in a cup of coffee by percentage, what is 4 grams out of 1 cup? So people are supposed to ask "would you like 4 grams or 8?". It's very difficult to put something small like 4 grams of powder in your hand and say how much it weighs, but it is very easy to visualize a teaspoon's worth. Everyone knows what a teaspoon of sugar means, and how it tastes. Yes, they could learn its weight, but that is rote memorization, it's not as natural as volume visualization. Granted if you are eating a 1 ounce candy bar (sorry, 28 grams), it might be good to know that it is 25% sugar. Oh wait, if a candy bar is 28 grams, and you say that it has 7.5 grams of sugar in it, how does your easy percentage calculation thing work out then? Not many things come in exactly 100 gram units. It seems to me they should just put all three values on labels, weight, volume and percentage. Sometimes one is better than the others.

***** So a serious question - what do you call the equivalent of a cup of coffee? Do you say "Can I have 250 mils of coffee please?". A quarter of a liter? Why is there no metric 'unit' for something like a cup or a teaspoon's worth?
10 жыл бұрын
b minor Because metric units are generally devised and used for scientific measurement. Since the definition of "a cup" varies greatly and does not correspond to anything that occurs naturally in the universe, it doesn't make sense to attach it to a specific unit of measurement.

Actually, people DON'T understand what a teaspoon is. Many--probably most--people think of a teaspoon as a small spoon used for eating. Why? Because that is, in fact, one meaning of 'teaspoon.' But when a label indicates the amount of an ingredient in teaspoons, it means a measuring teaspoon. Cooks will likely get it. Others likely won't. And a measuring teaspoon is MUCH smaller than a teaspoon for eating with. So people will likely imagine the amount of sugar as much more than it really is. Which might not be a bad thing.
@ssppeellll8 жыл бұрын
+Randi M Roble I do not believe that either spoons for tea or spoons for the table are made to specific size standards. I have little doubt that the size of such spoons can vary greatly. In the household I grew up in--which, of course, may not be typical--we used the word 'teaspoon' to refer to a smallish spoon for eating, for example, cereal. And we used 'tablespoon' to refer to larger spoons for eating, for example, soup. So while origin of the words may make it seem like everyone should know what volume is involved in either case, I do not think many have even a close idea.

By using the metric system, you know exactly what's in your food, down to the last atom. It's the most precise measuring system there is, which is why even Americans use it in hospitals, because you can't measure potentially lethal medication in tea spoons. Basically the whole world uses the metric system exclusively. Even the UK is slowly switching to it. I want to know how much sugar there is in my food in grams and not something inaccurate and variable as "tea spoon".

lol, I lost 40 lbs just by switching to diet soda. Literally only change. Granted I was a pretty big guy at the time but it also became motivator. (6'3" 330 lbs at the time) It's pretty obvious what copious amount of sugar do to a person.
@onkelpappkov26665 жыл бұрын
Downside is that diet soda contains sweeteners (aspartame and co.) which, aside from the obesity problem, are more harmful in the long run. It sounds like a thing straight from the movie Idiocracy, especially because I drink very sugary drinks as all the time as well, but water is an option. Not in Flint, Michigan, of course.

I think one of the main problems in the US is that the amount of nutrients is given for "serving size" and every company can define the serving size for their product. We all know you wont eat 30g of cereal for breakfast. In Europe the nutrition needs to be on the product for 100g, 1kg or 1l. That makes it very easy to compare.

This is a great episode to truly consider here about how dangerous sugar (refined, brown, fake, etc) is to our health and well-being. My wife and I, after watching the documentary "Fed Up," tossed all of our sugar and processed foods the next day. That was back in June and to this day, we've been eating sugar free diets and as an added bonus we've both have lost a great deal of weight: 15+ lbs myself, 25+ lbs for my wife. It was a tough process at first but we've easily grown accustomed to our new lifestyle and can easily replicate sweet treats without sugar, using pure maple syrup (not the fake stuff like Mrs. Butterworth) or honey instead.

+Andrew Fillhart I wish more people knew this, you are sooooo lucky to have had the will power to take your health back and change your lives forever. It is disgusting the way the food industry works and I literally come to tears when I see all the obese children and tired and bloated and hurting Americans who have been brain washed to think that what they eat is even food and so many other terrible subliminal messages, we need to spread this knowledge and keep getting people to see more clearly the reality of our food wasteland. I just want to personally thank you for maintaining self control to bring real well being into your life, you deserve to look and feel good like a healthy man or woman should and I appreciate everyone and anyone who actually makes an effort to better their lives. Congrats on the weight loss and enjoy making a better life for you and your family! XD

I also drink green smoothies for breakfast that I make myself. I could go on but if you want ideas or other suggestions please message me and I can explain in further detail.

Honestly, part of the reason sugar is so addictive is that our bodies do need SOME. Not nearly as much as we tend to consume, but some. It's also something we've instinctively identified as not poisonous, so of course that translates to "safe to eat". I'm personally trying to cut out added sugars, at least on a regular basis. The occasional treat won't hurt, but if I need a sweet fix I'm going to go for whole fruits first. If I'm not hungry enough for the fruits, then I'm not hungry enough for my favourite chocolates either!

I've been warning people about sugar for years, and they think I'm nuts. But they ignore me, turn fat, and I mean really fat, diabetic, and I mean really diabetic, and if they're not busy getting fat and diabetic, they're busy with their heart attacks. I started several years ago, reading the labels on foods at the grocery store, basically ended up emptying my refrigerator, and when I buy groceries today, 95% or more of the foods on the shelves are, in my view, inedible, because of their sugar content. Every once in a while, they'll pull one on me and get me to buy sugar without realizing it. The most recent case was a box of "Iodized Salt." When I read the ingredients, I was shocked to find the the "Salt" I had purchased contained sugar! Excuse me???? What a nightmare. Shopping for groceries these days, is a bit like swimming through a shark tank to find some minnows for dinner. There are entire aisles I skip, because there's nothing edible in them, although they're loaded with what some corporate food processors call, "food." You think we live in a civilized society that protects us from wild animals and beasts. What??? I think I'd rather live with the wild animals and beasts, than with my neighbors, who are trying to kill me for profit. And it's completely legal! Thanks, John Oliver, for this program. You da man!

@RobertMertensPhD8 жыл бұрын
+Phero Next time you make a purchase at your favorite fast food restaurant, pick up a packet that's labeled, "Salt" and read the ingredients. If food companies know that putting sugar in your food will make you buy and eat more of their food, then putting sugar into your food is hardly insane. It's just "good business."
@RobertMertensPhD8 жыл бұрын
+jbmp1390 At first I thought I would simply ignore this, because you don't really exist, having no real name and no real photo, you can be anybody or say anything. But I know you mean well, to chide me for being so, well, whatever it was I was supposed to be so. After you've watched your loved ones die, after doing everything you could to convince them what was killing them, what you see here is an expression of my frustration. Sugar in our food is an amazingly powerful technique for getting people to overdose on food. It makes you hungry, it makes you eat more, it makes you, eventually, fat, eventually diabetic, eventually, prematurely dead. If I'm breaking an arm, it's from waving my arms frantically, trying to get the word out. John Oliver made a bigger sound than I've ever been able to make. Unfortunately, 95% of the food on the grocery shelves is still bathed in sugar, which tells me that 95% of the general population still doesn't get it. It's even worse than this: I live in Florida, where Big Ag produces so much sugar in the southern part of the state, the runoff from these massive farms goes into the rivers that flow north, causing nutrient pollution, which has turned all of our rivers and lakes so black, that you can't safely swim in them or even see more than a foot beneath the surface.

Avoiding added sugar and salt, which are both addictive, is pretty hard. I was able to have much more luck with salt than sugar but it’s made a huge difference in my life. I didn’t realize how addicted my tastebuds were to salt till I had tapered down to only having the salt in my diet that I added myself, which was very little. Now even years later I have a very hard time eating regular chips or fries cause all I taste is the salt to a point that it’s completely unappetizing after a few bites. It’s been helpful in turning me away from such unhealthy snacks that I used to eat a lot of, I’m still working on sugar as I do love baked goods like cake but I have cut soda out for sparkling water or water with lemon. Sugar is by far the hardest but I think it’s been better to just try bit by bit each year. I’ve realized how much candy and junk food I never really even liked but just ate to eat after cutting down. Now I only have a few sweet treats I really like so it actually makes it easier to turn things down when offered cause I don’t really care for most of snacks and treats I used eat.

@just_eirik10 жыл бұрын
But why is the sugar industry treated as people like you and me?
@stormelemental1310 жыл бұрын
One, it is people like you or me. The faceless mega-corporation writing the letters is most likely another Food Science grad who is pulling his hair out at the extra work this regulation might mean, and wishing people who didn't know jack would stop trying to mess with his job. Two, because they are among the best informed as to the potential impact of the regulation. If regulation was being proposed that would affect the trucking industry, I would have very little idea as to whether it would help solve a problem, do nothing, or make things worse. A truck driver or shipping company on the other hand probably has a very good idea of what the possible effects would be. It is also worth noting that they don't decide what the final regulation looks like, they are just allowed to comment.
