Bob Murray died in 2020. The suit against HBO was dismissed with prejudice on February 21, 2018 after getting snarky comments from lawyers and judges that it was a SLAPP suit.

The best part? Bob Murray died from complications caused by _Black Lung._ He spent his last few years fighting to remove any and all accountability he and his company held in forcing the condition on their staff by dodging and ignoring all safety regulations and laws. He spent years removing the insurance and healthcare coverage plans to avoid the consequences of his greed, and he choked down his last breath knowing exactly how his workers were suffering, and that he was a laughing stock that had his SLAPP suit thrown out. True justice.

I'm a native of WV, and I am so beyond sick of this state constantly shooting itself in both feet (so to speak) for the sake of an industry that employs less than 1% of the state's workforce and *only* enriches the coal companies. They come in, destroy the environment, poison the air and water tables for decades, pay a pittance to the employees (mining pays well relative to other jobs here, but the miners aren't getting paid REMOTELY close to the value of what the coal is sold for), then file bankruptcy and move down the road to do it all over again. But because they pay to have a school built or something, they're seen as ~heroes. Give me a break. Miners knew a century ago how awful and dangerous the job is and how much the company is using them, destroying their bodies and the local environment, and they wanted nothing more than to make sure they could keep their kids from enduring the same things. Pretending those are nonfactors now is absurd. "Oh, but if we get rid of coal, the state will go broke!" This state has ALWAYS been broke. Even at the mining industry's height, the state was poor af, and it's precisely because the coal companies extract the resources and the wealth produced from those resources. We could bring back every single mining operation here that's ever existed and the result would be the same.
