It’s important to highlight that these renewable sources can be decentralized to the household level, putting Americans on the SUPPLY side of the power industry, in a scaling, storm resilient microgrid based on renewables. This turns bills into paychecks for the American people. Also expanding geothermal climate control for homes where possible can reduce electric needs for AC/heating, some with EV charging saw their home AC drop from ~50% of demand to ~15% when switching to geothermal, increasing household surplus. So maybe instead of giving $600 million to companies that already make billions a year, the government should be subsidizing the repair and eco-conversion of existing homes to act as the new scalable power supply for Corporate America. Power to the people.

Thank You, you said what I was going to say. I would add the importance of affordable battery storage and the creation of a smart grid system. Besides residential, solar panels will cover flat topped commercial building and parking lots.
@robertmarmaduke18625 күн бұрын
Tell that to Texas ... they went 'renewable' and now have 400% higher utility bills with ROLLING BLACKOUTS. Every grid is dialing back on net-metering and in many states, like Nevada, REFUSING to allow residential solar back-feeding, because of Harmonic DisEquilibrium actually _destroying_ the steady voltage and frequency of the grid. Diesel power grid that I worked with accepted a 25MW solar project, destabilizing and then BLEW UP one of their diesel generators. It cost them $Ms!

@@chrisconklin2981I’m glad to see others feel the same way, I hate how addressing climate change is always prefaced as this terrible sacrifice when really we could be generating electricity and hydrogen(solid oxide electrolyzers)/synthetic fuels (if we can crack carbon storage) at a household level that we sell to corporations/export. That’s true capitalism, where we all get to play$$$$.
@KOAncars200925 күн бұрын
@@robertmarmaduke186interesting but I don’t trust Texas much, they have several exacerbating issues with their power grid. The fact they invested in more cost effective solar and wind energy means that many people would have seen even higher utility bills had they not expanded their green grid. States that moved away from net metering switched to net billing, paying homeowners less by crediting HO with what the power company would pay its suppliers. They still take the electricity from the HO and charge someone else full price, no problem.
@KOAncars200925 күн бұрын
@@robertmarmaduke186in terms of your net-metering comment, I believe many are realizing that we would effectively flip the current economy, so they have responded by switching to net billing where people are credited what the power company would pay its suppliers instead of crediting what the homeowner would have paid for the electricity drawn. Reducing the benefit or amount paid out to the homeowner… But they still take the electricity, no problem.

You've covered the Problem with wind farms (apart from their "non-reliable" property, which doesn't mean that they break down, but they may not be there when you need the power), but the BEST way to use solar power is to put it on your roof. That totally eliminates the requirement for power lines and dependence on a power utility.
@danderedere2 күн бұрын
Sorry, but I respectfully (and I genuinely mean respectfully) call bs. While it's true that in SOME climates this may be true, there are climates where there can be too few sun hours, it gets way too cold, or there is way too much snow (and possibly long winters) and similar issues (I just mentioned literally the four reasons why the place I live at can't rely on solar, and it's not because of the combination of all four). Naturally, not everyone even has a roof they can place panels on top of because, technically, they don't really have a roof, and on top of that, you never know when or why your power goes out even without relying on a grid. It can be useful with both to have a backup solution, but a power grid is necessary and helps with the opposite problem, which is wasted energy.

You really trust the power companies who refuse to maintain something as simple as a $25 cable hanger, you trust them to maintain and repair buried conduit when it breaks and becomes a multi-thousand dollar and possible multi-day project to fix? Really? And that’s even ignoring the consequences of water intrusion, which is basically inevitable. Putting the lines “out of sight, out of mind” might sound good, but it opens up so many other problems.

@moogle6825 күн бұрын
Even if they did that, at least we would then be able to supply electricity to the places that need it more reliably, and more of it overall. Besides, there would likely be evidence of them taking such a significant return on investment, and while they may get away with it for a bit, no one will be happy with that behavior and eventually something will be done to make them share some of those returns in one way or another.

Why are we not invested into solar roadways. Its FCC approved, Military bases are already implementing it. It provides energy. Horribly expensive, inefficient, easily broken... asphalt is cheap, durable, and very highly recyclable.
@Gray_Falcon9 күн бұрын
@@Olivia-W Easily broken and inefficient? I can't speak to price, I'm sure its more than asphalt. Its durability is expected double asphalts longevity. It doesn't create pot holes and can be replaced faster as you can swap out individual cells. For efficiency, its already been determined that if all highways where replaced with it, we would remove dependency on any other form of electrify for the entire nation. If you have some alternative sources on this, I would love to read them. Only sources I've seen other wise have been speculation without scientific backing or reasoning based on normal solar panels and not the unique design used by solar roadways.
@Olivia-W9 күн бұрын
@@Gray_Falcon If you could point me to those miracle solar panels solar roadways would be using, a good part of the world would love to hear of them. I'm sure glass manufacturers (or polymer?) would also love to know about this incredible wear resistant material that cars could drive on and it wouldn't scratch, deform, or crack much, and be temperature resistant, and highly UV resistant, and transparent to the right wavelengths of light, all at the same time- for years. Just on durability and degradation... the waste generated from replacement parts... Flat lying solar panels are also inefficient (they're mounted at an angle for a reason). Consider shadows of buildings, trees, anything higher, further reducing efficiency (solar panels are usually mounted in open fields or high on poles and roofs, hmmm). Consider heavy traffic areas- they'd be often shielded by cars, again reducing efficiency. Then you have to account for the _wildly_ fluctuating generation capacity- all the limitations of well placed solar panels, except worse. Look, it sounds amazing and futuristic, but even a cursory glance at the idea shows it's just a considerably worse version of normal solar panels. More: also, dirty solar panels. Yes, roads are cleaned, but grime still accumulates (even just from tires), again, efficiency reduction. And more: there was a test solar road in France, and it failed miserably.
@Gray_Falcon9 күн бұрын
@@Olivia-W Its literally Called Solar Roadways. If you google the name it should be the first thing that pops up. They are a US based company started government approved testing back in 2009 and have been fulfilling government contracts for years now. Its fine to be skeptical but your literally arguing without having done the research on the company yourself. Look into it. If you find research that shows otherwise on the product, I would be happy to read it. At present the product looks to be a positive. The fact that US military bases and research facility's want the technology on their campuses shows how valuable this tech is to national security. Given we have highways that span the whole country, and we have long stretches of highway that sit relatively empty in parts of the nation will allow us to move power to different parts of the US without having to tear down other forms of infostructure. The product also makes it safer to drive. Heated roadways melt snow, reduce the need for salt and endangering workers on poor road conditions. Add in the ability to hide wiring within the road. It reduces the chance of power outages and other service outages due to severe weather. The panels can be recycled, or repaired. Allowing for reuse of the product beyond it initial implementation. The waste of solar is constantly being reduced and continues to improve. Cancel Reply
