Romain, I've not commented to you before, but as a long term Indycar fan (I've watched the various incarnations of the series since 1973), let me belatedly welcome you to the series. I am glad you race in Indycar, and you make Indycar a better series. This was an unfortunate thing to happen. You were punted into the wall here. Nobody deserves this and it was a dangerous undertaking by Newgarden. While I'll say no-one is perfect, and all drivers occasionally have their moments, Newgarden's comments after the race both on NBC, and later on Twitter I think indicate that he either did this intentionally, or did it by mistake but tried to make it like you somehow deserved it. Either case is horrible and I think a lot of people are going to think less of him. Please know that despite any drivers bullying you on the track, that you just need to persist, and eventually other drivers will show you respect. Other new drivers in the series have had to overcome the disrespect that has been shown them before, but in the end, other drivers did come around. You already have a world full of fans who really enjoy you as a driver and think you're very kind to them personally at the track, so keep your head up high and keep up the good fight. I look forward to seeing you notch up your first win soon. Thanks for your daring, skillful abilities, and who you seem to be as a person.

It was an unnecessary risk to take on Newgarden's part. The fact that the race stewards took no further action is, frankly, embarrassing for the sport. Indy needs to tighten up what they consider to be clean racing. Otherwise, Indy will continue to be perceived as nothing more than open wheel NASCAR. This is a great sport with great drivers and it does a great job of distinguishing itself from F1 by way of budget, but Indy really should aspire to the level of quality of F1 in terms of racing clean AND quality of race courses (I'm looking at you, Nashville). This weekend was very disappointing. Nashville continues to be a poorly chosen street course and the amount of shithousery that the stewards allow is simply unacceptable.

If you want an example of the same thing in F1, look at 2018 Azerbaijan Raikkonen Ocon crash. Street tracks are tight, 90 degree or near 90 degree corners are even tighter. Newgarden’s move was a aggressive, no doubt, but he was fully alongside as they both turned in, and was ahead at the apex. That said, Grosjean did nothing wrong and it’s a shame it ruined his race after being so fast throughout the weekend. But I wouldn’t go so far as to say Newgarden was unsporting or deserved a penalty. This isn’t the same as punitively dumping someone like in NASCAR. But I would agree the track and definitely be improved, especially in the tighter sections, having a straight where cars can go four wide and but two can’t go side by side through the corner is a massive oversight.

What a race, it's awesome you can get this footage. Romain is there chance you can talk to NBC sports production and "suggest" to have them use PiP at the end of races so we can see the battles behind the leader. Every race last lap leader is up by 10 secs they get all the camera until the end and after. I get it but c'mon its 2022, use PiP, multiple PiPs so we can see the action behind the leader. Great race Romain! It's so awesome to see you in Indy! You like Indy better than F1? I do.

Was more than surprised when I saw it already on the other channel that there was not any race control action (sorry I'm used to F1's way to do it) - but JN was way, way too fast to get the corner and leaving enough space... freestile driving ... what a pitty - keep it up, you deserve a nice win soon 🙂

Sorry your race ended that way. You were one of the guys to beat all day, I enjoyed watching you slice through that field 3-4 times. That circuit is so narrow, and everyone was pretty aggressive. It reminds of a lot of my races in iRacing, basically you are just trying to stay near the front but also stay out of crashes.

That move by Josef would have been fantastic and fair.... on a road course with some runoff. On a street circuit with concrete walls, IMHO it was questionable at best. At worst, it could have been judged by the stewards as an avoidable collision.

Romain, brutal place for you to run out of brakes- but DAMN that was some nice driving, very cool to see you catch up to the cars ahead and then slide into that inside line, very cool to see you still killing it
@darkelemental2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't bad luck or him running out of brakes. He was intentionally pushed wide into the wall. Newgarden basically admits it during interviews saying he should've just backed out and he deserved to be put into a wall. It's some seriously dirty driving thats been plaguing indycar for a few years. Drivers treating the sport like some bottom freeder NASCAR and forcing all the decent drivers to give up and try to go to Europe

Apart from losing a few places because of the pits, you were blazing the track out there. A lot of good overtakes! Tough luck on the collision on the end though.

What happened with newgarden ruined the rest of my Sunday and I wasn't even driving! I was so pumped for you to take your first win in indy last Sunday. It's crazy the move that he made AND the fact no action taken!?? You had over 70 seconds of p2p you had that win taken from you! Head up Romain your champagne is being kept cold and that cork will pop any day now!

Tbf, Romain left no room for Josef on the inside, and so when Josef had the bobble over the bump, contact was bound to happen. If you watch back, Josef never went all the way to the outside wall. So he didnt push Romain into the wall, he just bounced into his door, and the wall left nowhere to go. Both could have avoided the incident, if both were a bit more careful, but Josef had right to the inside of the track, and by the apex, had the position, so would also have right to the exit.

Is this the first time in history where IndyCar (or _any_ major racing sport for that matter) has Racers on a street circuit racing on a bridge that crosses a body of water? At the very least, is this the _longest_ bridge they have raced across?
