How is NOBODY getting the joke of this sketch? The cringe is intentional. This whole sketch reads as a satire of the pressures put on new SNL cast members, to bring something new to the table. Watch it again. In the entire first three minutes, Luke basically runs through every hack joke you've heard from dudes on SNL - from the 70's to the late 90's. ANY of those jokes would feel at home, coming from a young Adam Sandler or David Spade. That first three minutes of silence proves how much SNL has grown over the past few decades, and how those types of jokes are dated and irrelevant. And in Luke's FIRST sketch, with an original character, it's THE worst most hack jokes that dudes have overplayed for years. It's a mirror to the overuse of "white dude jokes" in sketch comedy. It's also a mirror to the internet reaction to Luke, and people's expectations. Just look at what Luke keeps repeating: "I just wanted to make a splash." Everyone in the comments is acting like the back half of the sketch wasn't written before they started the sketch. The entire back half of the sketch is the cast explaining how those earlier jokes are outdated, and why they aren't funny. This sketch is also SNL admitting it's own past mistakes, and how it caused these played out jokes. It's also demonstrating how adding Luke doesn't symbolize a return to those style of jokes - they're still irrelevant. I mean, if you're not convinced, look at the set! They're using the classroom set from their Gilly sketches! They haven't used this set in ages -- but there was a solid 3-5 period of SNL, where it felt like I saw this set every week. In a sketch where they're calling out their own played out jokes from the past, they're using a played out setting. This is brilliant satire. That's why it got past rehearsal. You're all nuts. If this was Tim Heidecker pulling this level of cringe on SNL, you'd all be losing your shit.

The first couple minutes I was thinking "wow this is bad and uncomfortable", but by the end I saw that it was intentional and 4th-wall breaking, sort of. The point of the sketch was to show that a new cast member (student) wanted to make a big impression on the class (audience) and failed miserably. America is about 20 or 30 years behind most of the world on sex stuff so yeah, the American Propaganda machine keeps shoving same sex issues down everyone's throats until the older people die out and it isn't a thing anymore and everyone gets their rights. Or at least stops getting bullied or killed over their sexuality. There are still people who are 40 or 50 and still dealing with childhood trauma from being picked on so the machine is just trying to lesson that by accepting everyone. I thought this was a great sketch. If anything, Luke was just too good at being an a-hole, as his character was supposed to be. It threw the audience off for a bit. But I enjoy comedy like this; it's a bit surreal. I don't need every moment of a sketch to be laugh-out-loud funny. Plus, it looks like Luke actually memorized his lines, as opposed to all the other SNL players, who are looking at cue cards every other second.
@intalent7 жыл бұрын
dude, I disagree about it being a great sketch (due to writers not luke), but I completely agree with the memorizing lines thing. It was so refreshing! Some cast members have like 3 lines the entire show and read them off of cue cards
@revjim777 жыл бұрын
Jason Meadows You may want to go back and look up the definition of surreal.
@jasonmeadows40757 жыл бұрын
J L, well, I said a "bit surreal," meaning slightly. Not surreal in the sense of Monty Python surreal, or surreal like the SNL 'Potato Chip' sketch. The sketch is a bit strange or bizarre in the way it is presented, where, I think, the first half of the sketch is designed not to really get a laugh at all, to an unusual length/degree, but the second half is. Not the typical SNL sketch, or the typical comedy sketch in general. That's why quite a few people apparently don't like it; it defies their expectations of what comedy is supposed to be. Of course, some people just don't think it's funny, but what can you do.
@revjim777 жыл бұрын
Jason Meadows Except it is blatantly straight forward and not surreal in the least. It was clear from the beginning that the intent was to make this character unlikable from the beginning. If that’s the case, the only way to turn the sketch is to make his all his interactions “cringy” to begin with and then mock him later. I’m guessing they thought by extending the horrible jokes In the first half, it would become funny through repetition. This skit was a mess.
@jasonmeadows40757 жыл бұрын
J L, while true that it was clear that Luke's character was supposed to be unlikable or "cringy", it still defied audience expectations, because (and I'm quoting someone else from this comments section), I don't think a sketch typically and purposefully makes an audience member say to himself, "wow this is bad and uncomfortable," to the degree the first half of the sketch made me and some other commentators, who liked the sketch, feel. Again, it was the unusual degree or length of that cringiness which screwed with some people watching. When I watched the first half of the sketch, I felt like, "What the f*ck?" It was almost as if the first half of the sketch was designed to make it look like the whole sketch would fail. It was unusual in its delivery and that's what made it funnier than just the material itself. Then again, I admit it could all have been completely unintended by the writers and, like some people who have also commented here have said, I'm reading too much into it.
