I commend his passion, but it's clearly performative (ha) and egocentric. If the character were a really good teacher, he would stop his shtick as soon as the kids started expressing frustration about how many teachers they've had before, asked them about it, and talked about their situation and what they really need rather than going full Dead Poet's Society on his own. Ironically, that could have forged a real connection.

We need teachers that will give students the benefit of the doubt, who are trained to recognize symptoms of abuse or hardship in and outside of school, who will be sympathetic and validating of mental illness, and who will allow students to be individuals and express themselves safely. There’s nothing wrong with Shakespeare as it is, or Bronte or Vonnegut - we just want to get an education and get out unscathed.
