That was interesting to see how quick and painless it was...Oliver was more interested in finishing his snack than in what you were doing. I'm sure it feels a little weird to him at first, hence he had to check it out, but it obviously doesn't hurt. Thanks for the vid. Oliver's a handsome fellow.

Just did it on 2 alpines and 1 Nubian. Went on easy. We are 3 days in. They are sore for sure. Lots of laying down. I can tell they are bummed. This was my first time banding. Hoping they get back to normal within a week or so.

Great video. Your goats are better behaved through the castration process than any bulls that I had to band. I definitely will share this video with others.

I like the Ca bander and works well on older goats. I haven't seen anyone use it on horns and if you are doing it on buckling you an use a conventional bander. Our buck after a hour acted like he was dying but by nightfall he was fine. We just banded our buckling horns and we won't know the results until mid-July (10 weeks) and he acted like we had banded his brains, not his horns. Lots of crying, panting, and whatnot. However, by nightfall he acted fine, like nothing had happened.

It works great on older goats that are too big for a conventional bander. Cheap too. After 2 months our big guy lost his package, it looked like a mole on the ground. Decent experience though it turn out we did not need to castrate him. He still fights with the other bucks. Pretty friendly too. I highly recommend it, but it is a lot easier to do with two people instead of one.

Just got my CA bander in the mail. Used one tube to practice on a towel. I have some older 3 and 4 year old bucks to band. I run a goat grazing business so it's important everyone is testosterone LESS for jobs.

Thanks Marc!! I will be using the California Bander for this first time this year. These vids are very educational and extremely useful. I thank you and especially my goats thank you. Keep up the good work!!

Really enjoy your videos. Your spirit is grand my friend! I just bought a $980 external frame backpack. I've looked into pack goats a bit. I'd want to train one up slowly to get really strong. I threw 50 pounds in the external frame pack and did 1.5 miles on foot rested 2 days then another 1.7. The goal is 100 pounds 10 miles a day. If I had a pack goats he could take half that weight for me perhaps. In the future when I've got all my equipment I'm looking for someone who is down to do a 30 day survival trip. I'm gonna be packing a Diana 48 .22 pellet gun and a small fishing net and collapsible pole for game. I need to learn the edibles. I figured 50 pounds of that 100 pounds will be dried food for the first run try to hunt as much as possible small game. Then attempt a second run all foraging and hunting when confident with skill set. Posting this comment 3 xs I hope you see it. 👍 If you'd ever consider a 30 day challenge let me know old soul.

Sounds fun. Wish I could do it with you but I don’t have 30 days straight to be away unfortunately.

So, it's just another way of banding. Any consequences, like tetanus, if they don't have a tetanus vaccine? Any open wounds when the dead part falls off?

I’m looking at having to do this for the first time in the next month with about a 1year old… DH and I keep discussing if we should do the burdizzos or the elastrator (we have the little green donut kind) we don’t have the California style bander. For older cattle and rams we generally go for the burdizzos, but I’m reluctant to do that to my little guy. Generally the green donuts do just fine on up to week old calves and all the lambs.
@rebelrider33612 жыл бұрын
As someone who has done yearlings, I'd be surprised if those green ones would even make it over the testicles. I've never used a burdizzo on goats, but I'd be afraid those green bands wouldn't have the strength to cut the blood flow off to a yearling's jewels. My eight week old kids are getting toward the upper size for the green ones we use.
@kristenvincent36222 жыл бұрын
@@rebelrider3361 DH suggested maybe the red bands?… he will check in at our feed store on our next town trip, if we need to use the burdizzos we can, but we want it to be as non-traumatic a process as possible so Jimmy doesn’t decide we are bad peoples. We have done yearling cattle with burdizzos although my BIL did get kicked twice during that experience; hilarious if you knew my Brother in law, trust me! That only happened because my father in law threw his back out and they all missed getting done as calves. We are Hoping that Jimmy has bred our little doe, and she hasn’t gotten friendly with any of the local boys.

How do you evaluate the pain in a professional way?
@startliving38592 жыл бұрын
Do you find their behaviour stays with the breeding mentality if they've bred before banding vs not breeding prior to banding? I've noticed with my dogs if they've bred before neutering they tend to continue wanting to mount a lot more vs if they're neutered before breeding (I know dogs and goats are different but a man is a man regardless of species lol).

@PackGoatscom Жыл бұрын
no, they usually lay around for a bit and look a little gut punched. He will be back to normal soon.

Do you have to vaccinate them with anything before this or antibiotics or sterilization where the band is going? I’m having to do this to one of my older goats also.
@PackGoatscom Жыл бұрын
It's important that they are current on their CD and T but no to the rest of your questions. Just make sure you check it about 2 weeks later and apply iodine about once a week till it falls off or you can go ahead and cut it off with hoof trimmers at about 10 days. You can snip the band off then as well.

Did u know this is illegal in Australia? Illegal when done without ocal pain relief. Just discovered this when talking to a vet over there. I'm going to be using burdizzo on mine with lidocaine

I’ve done burdizzo many times and it’s much more painful in my opinion. It was awful. Especially on an older goat.
@theozarksjourneytoself-suf54202 жыл бұрын
They can legally do it at up to 10 weeks of age there. Here there are no regulations on that kind of thing. I'm not sure in my own mind there's any good way to do it. In Russia, they can use hormone shots to keep bucks from breeding. Wish that was available here.

@HUMPTY Said by someone who has never dealt with a buck. It makes a HUGE difference in behavior because a fixed goat is much happier since he's not being constantly harassed by does wanting bred. My buck is often miserable because when he's penned, the does will stand there teasing him until he attacks the fence. The wethers are happily running around with the does. Also, the wethers don't pee on themselves, so they're clean and don't smell. Bucks are soaked in urine and stink. Of all the animals, dogs and cats included, I think bucks get the most benefit from being fixed.
