Late Night Talk #3 with "Adrian Hernandez" (Original Collections of Endler's Livebearer)

In another episode of Late Night Talk we will welcome Mr. Adrian Hernandez who is the Breeder, Developer and Preservationist Of Original Collection Populations of Endler's Livebearer (Poecilia Wingei). In co-operation with several other people, Adrian Hernandez introduced Poecilia Wingei into the hobby and still owns the Registry of original strains and breeders keeping the pure wild strains.
We will cover topics like Introduction of Poecilia Wingei into the hobby, Original registry list, classification, original collections and locations, examples of original strains and much more. There will of course be space for questions so I hope you will tune in and enjoy the talk.

Yeah. It happens here too. We only have santa maria and blue stars. Being creative I crossbred them to some guppy and obtain some beautiful hybrids.

My hypothesis about the white dorsal trait in hybrids is that its extremely high heritability and penetrance is the result of gene imprinting, mitochondrial DNA, or some other non-Mendellian inheritance mechanism from the mother producing a male sex-limited heterotopic effect on the dorsal epithelium expanding the morphogen field producing the tightly-packed iridophores characteristic of blue patches upwards towards the dorsal-most extremety. One mechanism of this morphogen field expansion could be the absence of an X-linked wingei gene encoding a morphogen normally limiting the dorsal iridophore morphogen field from the dorsalmost direction such that in male wingei possessing the wingei X chromosome, the blue iridophores do not make it onto the dorsal fin. An easy way to begin investigation of these hypotheses is to conduct two crosses: F0: Male endler hybrid (an F1 male from a Male wingei x Female reticulata cross) x Female wild type wingei. Then, isolate the F1 generation. Raise them to maturity and observe them for the white dorsal fin trait. If the gene is sex linked, then there should be 0% white dorsal in this generation because all the males of this cross have wingei X chromosomes. If there is a significant number of males with the white dorsal fin trait, then this is not sex-linked, but autosomal. We know this because the only way a male could have a white dorsal fin in this generation is if he inherited the trait from an autosome from his father, and if the trait is dominant (or high-penetrance). Next, allow the F1 generation to inbreed (full sib-full sib inbreeding). The F2 is 50% males with the wingei X chromosome and 50% males with the reticulata X chromosome. Male coloration is mostly Y-linked, so genes producing the wingei male coloration are standardized by this approach as all male offspring will have wingei Y chromosomes. If there is a sex-limited, X-linked heterotopic mutation, 50% of the males of the inbred F2 generation should have the white dorsal trait (from the reticulata X chromosome) and 50% should not have it. If 100% of the offspring have white dorsal fins, then the trait shows mitochondrial inheritance.

Hello!! Loved this video, very amazing. I live in United States and I'm wondering if Adrian is still selling endlers? Most of the info I find is 1-2 years old which makes me nervous he's not selling anymore. They only thing that maybe seems active is aquabid. Just very interested in obtaining some pure line endlers and loved his selection. Thank you!!!

@Vivian Tristesse Thank you very much for your comment, nice to see another Endler's Enthusiast on the channel :) I believe you need to contact Adrian directly, the best way is via Facebook, he is quite active over there. He is creator and administrator of FB group called "World Endlers Livebearer (Wingei)" and he also posts there pictures regularly. That would be most likely the best shot :)

@Emily thank you for letting us know. On the web page was mostly pictures and information about original Wingei strains, but not really any particular offer. For that you need to contact Adrian directly. On Facebook you can find a group called "World Endlers Livebearer (Wingei)." and Adrian is creator and also administrator of this group. He regularly posts pictures of his stock over there and you can contact him directly on Facebook for more information. I am sure he'll answer soon if you send him PM. :) Hope that helps...

I have not been able to watch the whole video. I know you put links and I was already aware of swamp river Aquatics but they don't seem to be for sale? Are Adrian Hernandez's fish the only registered after all? What about the endlers shop?

@Tom Lee they are for sale, you just need to contact Adrian by an e-mail. There have been other collections done by other people later. There are of course other collected Wingei by other collectors like for example Campoma nr. 47 Blue Star. However, other collections done later by different people were not the topic of our discussion as we don't know almost anything about them. Adrian HD collection is the first original one and he still keeps them pure. The thing that you many times get now is somebody claiming they have collected Wingei, or claiming they have original collections, just to earn money on it. There definitely are other people who really collected Wingei, however, I don't have any data about them, here I have original data from original Preservationist based on registry he keeps for over 20 years. I am not saying these fish are the only registered, I am saying these fish are trustworthy, and when you buy them, you know for sure what you are getting :)

To me it honestly doesn't sound like there are any pure species or sub-species left which is an unbelievable tragedy. Once all the species and subspecies are mixed you've lost them for good. Hybrids take that one step further. Has any DNA testing been done with what pure Endler types still exist to ascertain if they are all one variable species in fact? Or even a distinct species?

@River P I can only agree that it definitely is tragedy that they are getting extinct. Genetic tests have been done and are done on regular basis, however, they usually ain't public for simple reasons of somebody else copying the results, or manipulating with them claiming his fish are "pure stock" simply to be able to sell them for higher profit. That is the reason why Adrian keeps register of breeders who get them from him, and keeps track of his original stock himself. There was actually genetic testing done recently in Europe with very interesting results, however, I was asked to not talk details about it and share it with others unfortunately...

I have a small colony of peacock endlers that Adrian sent me in the 2000’s. They are pure. I’m expecting that Adrian’s advice will get them to grow better by feeding them frozen worms in the afternoons.

To be the presevationist of a specie, AdrianHD must first know 100% genetic of his fish. Please show the DNA research of His Cumaná anda Campoma. When Adrián show us the results about his "Poecilia" All of us We can refer to a specific specie or not

Majority of viewers don't know that much about Pecilia Wingei and the purpose of this Interview was to Introduce people to Original Adrian's Collections. Adrian knows genetics of his fish, but we have agreed in advance that in this Interview we won't cover them, as it is a large topic and majority of viewers would not understand it.There is only so much you can cover in 2h and once again, this was an Interview to introduce more people into hobby on an entertainment side, not an academic discussion or conference...

totally agree, with Adrian no one has a conversation about genetics. No one can ever speak of preserving a species if they do not know what species it is breeding. And these are the misunderstandings that Mr. Adrián has caused fans of this fish. More than 20 years raising and selling "false wingeis", thousands of dollars earned from sales to all over the world and he doesn't even invest in demonstrating the genetics of his fish. Luckily I only own fish direct from published scientists, universities and scientific studies. I breed the real wingeis, no FAKES
