Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

It was staged, you could see that Mitch purposely stalled at the end to let Colbert win. There was absolutely no need for him to stall with the turtle shell there at the end.
@od4us

@@skins4thewin they were talking about staging the wrong warp, not the Colbert win. It's a glitch that's fairly difficult to pull off correctly during a speed run.
@skins4thewin
@skins4thewin 5 жыл бұрын
Thomas Miller - You misunderstand me. I meant that it was staged in that Mitch purposely delayed the glitch to allow Colbert to win. He killed time at the end before entering the glitch warp. You can clearly see it when he is moving back and forth while holding the shell which is completely needless for the glitch. He was purposely stalling to allow Colbert to win. I'm sure they instructed him to do this so that the script could be preplanned.

It's easy to underestimate how nuts this entire thing is. Here are the big conditions: You need to kill all three piranah plants and if you miss one at this speed then you might not even notice Set ALL these shells in super specific pixel-perfect locations. If you're off on jumping on that one just a little, it won't work. Glitch into the SIDE of the pipe which is kind-of rough in itself And do ALL OF THIS while following a precise route to do it as fast as physically possible with no mistakes because if you even breathe at the wrong thing at the wrong time then the whole thing just falls apart!

Wow, he actually got that super hard glitch about 1 second after the Columbia guys finished (you can see him going down a non-existent pipe). It takes a while after that for the game to glitch its way into the credits, but if you time the run by when he lost control (which is a common way to time them), he almost got 2nd! And considering it looked like he started ~2.6 seconds late on the camera, he *would* have finished 2nd if not for his bad start (signal must have been unclear on his end). That was ridiculously close for racing such different things :)

That's part of the joke though. With microwave food some parts are like way too fucking hot and you have to spit out out or bare with the blisters as it cools on your tongue. It doubles as giving him some time.

My nes is still working fine. After we got it in 1992. Same with the carts. It's all about maintenance, that many people cannot or will not do. But speedrunners, will always have working carts, controllers and consoles.

Smart on Stephen and his team! It can be tough to get a live audience excited about video games because usually they're not always the kind of people who know anything about that scene. But by making it a challenge against athletes and Stephen himself, he was able to keep them engaged.

In a few years from now speedrunning events will become a televised event for the (not very regularly playing) mainstream, as opposed to an obscure event with 'nerds' and 'virgins'. Guys like Stephen open-mindedly making time for Mitch and not roasting him for being 'no lifer' is a great step.

I felt like having Colbert win was a bit anti-climatic. The purpose of this interview/skit should have been to promote interest in the charity event and the final scene when Mitch beat the game was overshadowed by Stephen's win. That being said, props to him for having Mitch on in the first place.

Yeah I agree. I get that Colbert winning was the "joke" since he was the non-serious competitor, but I feel like that kind of undermines the whole bit. It makes the speedrun seem not as impressive especially since the commentary just stops and the camera stops focusing on Mitch at all as soon as Stephen finishes. It wasn't even mentioned how precise and rare it is to pull this trick off so to a viewer who doesn't know shit about SMB3 or speedrunning it's probably not clear what happened or why they should care.

Hotshots2890 lol, Then the "sport" is a problem, if there happened to be a bit of paint missing in a marathon and an athlete used it to cut half the field, no one would be impressed.

Very happy they had this sort of thing on, though a tiny bit disappointed they didn't at least for half a second point to the screen and show he had beaten it. The 'Race' part was silly so it doesn't matter if he 'won' the race, but not acknowledging that he beat the game a few seconds after is weird.

Yeah, it doesn't, it's just strange to showcase it and not point out the finish. .5 seconds yelling 'And He's done!' if the audience doesn't know what the end looks like, leaves them thinking he failed to finish.
