yes, have grown garlic, worked pretty well as i recall :) In the spring try little potatoes in a container (i plant norland) its very satisfying because it just seems like nothing is happening under there and when you dump the container you see how they have all just multiplied and you've got loads of potatoes, its fun, I like to play in the dirt and my grandkids do too :)

I love that you buy sustainably harvested fish and take the care to cook it perfectly. If we can't get fresh fish we use frozen vac sealed fillet fish portions and thaw them in a big bowl of very cold water while still in the sealed packaging. Pat dry before frying. The fillets are also available with sustainable certifications. Our tip for keeping guacamole green . . . add a few shots of any hot sauce (we like chipotle) . . it has VINEGAAAR in it! I have never made one of your menus in full (although I scorched off a good chunk of my hair making coq au vin along with you, and now it is my favorite cooking story, beating out the time I pulled a muscle whisking aioli, so THANK YOU), but I LOVE your show and it is my favorite accompaniment while cooking. Even more than Julia Child. (Gasp, horror!) I adore entertaining and hosting dinner parties, but prep work can be such a damn slog. I just watched this video while preparing for a dinner party TOMORROW night (I was making the base for a cheese soufflé and making two kinds of tart dough, one for a pissaladière and the other for tarte tatin, IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHICH OBVIOUSLY YOU MUST) and drinking a dry gin martini and it. was. amazing. (Said the actress to the bishop.) If you ever hop a train north to Albany seriously come find me I WILL FEED YOU ALL THE FOOD THIS IS NOT A JOKE. Now I have to go caramelize five pounds of onions for the pissaladière; I will put on some of your archival footage and watch while weeping grateful onion tears. XO Rosemary

Hey dear Randall, in order to keep the pesto green (basil pesto maybe it works as well for carrot tops) my mother blanches the leaves reaaallyy quick and put them in ice water.

Avocado and bagel - both sent me to the hospital. Bagel not so bad. Avocado - my wound was a stab wound as the avocado slid when I tried to stab the pit resulting in a stab into my hand - a really bad stab. Hospital staff actually made my husband leave the room and questioned me extensively about my wound - because it looked like a "defensive" wound . Pro tip - if you have an avocado stab wound - wrap your injury in a dark brown towel. Minor emergency folks assume that towel is soaked in blood - jump to the front of the line. Better pro tip - use extreme caution when stabbing the avocado.
