Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Scales & Tales with Finding Phrygian. Last week I posted the "Discovering Dorian" episode of this series and received a ton of great feedback, comments/messages, and requests to continue onward and focus on the remaining modal scales from the major scale. Needless to say, that's exactly what this episode/lesson contains, so let's dive in and explore this exotic and common tonality/scale known as Phrygian.
This lesson is similar in form to the previous episode that focused on Dorian, but this time we're hitting everything related to ultra-exotic Phrygian mode. This includes some authentic-sounding Flamenco guitar ideas, a good sample of what this scale sounds like, and a few locations to perform it on the guitar. We're also hitting various chords that imply this scales exotic and ear-catching sound, along with a look at some famous music that features this flavor - including brief examples by David Bowie, film composer John Williams, Alice In Chains, and the mighty Pink Floyd, to name a few.
If you're one of the countless viewers that requested to continue this series of mode-focused lessons, curious about understanding how to use this interesting/common flavor found in music, or maybe just a player wanting to shake things up in their playing - this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

More fun with Phrygian: superimposing pentatonic scales. The notes of pentatonic minor (1 b3 4 5 b7) are found in the Dorian, Phrygian, and Aeolian modes, so you can substitute the pentatonics freely for any of those modes with a common major parent scale. To continue with E Phrygian: its parent major is C Ionian, which also gives us D Dorian and A Aeolian, so you can play D pentatonic minor and A pentatonic minor over E Phrygian riffs or progressions, as long as you resolve them to strong E Phrygian tonalities (leaning on that E-F relationship is a good idea). Try playing a minor pentatonic sequence in E, then dropping down a whole step and playing the same sequence again in D, and then resolving to E.

Modes have always intimidated me because I find them so confusing! Basically I know that each mode is a variation of the Major (Ionian) mode right? My issue is the fingering of each mode. Can you do a video for slowpokes like me that shows the fingering of each mode? Also is it the “C” Major scale which is the Ionian? D= Dorian, E=Phrygian F=Lydian, G= Mixolydian, A= Aolian, B=Locrian? Thanks for allowing me to ask a long winded question!

If it's all ionian sections , then why not think of it as playing "x" major scale above the 3rd chord to get phrygian tension ? Is there another purpose for modal thinking ? 🤔
