There was this period in early 60s where MGM animation outsourced Tom & Jerry to an Eastern European studio in the Czech Republic. All the musical scores were electronic atonal avante garde stuff and the animation style was all bizzare angles. Buckethead's music would fit perfectly over those cartoons.

You're welcome and thank you! I think that's why I really like him and his music - he's everywhere at once. Check out his mellow acoustic-based releases like Colma or Electric Tears. Those albums changed how I looked at him and realized that for everything crazy and weird that he plays, he also plays melodic and sweet things that are really nice.

Another great lesson, David! You are right, it is irrelevant what Buckethead looks like, his music can stand on its own merits. I like that his music doesn't have any lyrics. Doesn't need them. He is a master manipulating tonality to evoke emotions. Thanks again for featuring BH on your channel - it's great that you break down some of his musical ideas.
@LateNightLessons5 жыл бұрын
Thank you and I totally agree! Buckethead is great and the fact that we don't really know what he looks like makes him even more interesting to me. I also feel that too many people focus more on an artists "look" or "image" rather than focus on their music. Buckethead's "image" is whacked-out and weird, but I think it adds something extra to his music, with the bizarre and spooky imagery blended with the music is a perfect blend. I know plenty of people that don't really like Buckethead, but as soon as I heard him and noticed what he was dong, I was hooked! : )

Great lesson David,you're right about Buckethead. I love the mystique surrounding his persona...his music combines both traditional as well as things with a crazy flavor or accent. You're so right about getting bored with riffs,licks...ie stuck in a rut. Good thing to branch out and find some new tonalities, some wild new horizons. Sorry for going on and on. Keep up the great work \m/

Thanks so much Lance and that's great to hear! I look at it like food and eating habits. Yes, I love pizza, but sometimes I crave something else and choose another meal. You can't eat the same thing every day. Well, I guess you can, but that's boring and would become monotonous after a while. Music is sort of the same way, as you can only play the same things for so long before you become a little bored or things seem a little stale. When that happens, it's a great idea to move in an entirely different direction and try something radically different. Bored musically? Learn some slide guitar licks (or whatever). Open tunings...fingerstyle...funk...acoustic...classical....jazz...etc... There are so many things you could learn about and learn from, it's mind boggling and really helps to keep things fresh and interesting! Rock on bro and thanks again! : )

First, let me say thank you so much for the incredible content, your astounding knowledge of guitar, musicality & technique. You play beautifully, cleanly & effortlessly (though I’m sure many years of hard work & practice went into that). Your insight & ability to breakdown the origins of Buckethead’s riffs & chord structures are fabulous & eye opening. I also really appreciate your laid back approach & open mindedness. From what I’ve gathered reading articles, hear others speak of him, & listening to his coming alive podcast, I feel I have a bit of insight into why he is misunderstood & can be seen by many as a ‘gimmick’. As you’re prob aware his persona started out as a bit of a joke but quickly became an essential part of him. It became a tool he used to helped him introversion & self esteem issues. It allowed him to play in front of crowds without feeling judged, making only his music the main focus. You get this, while many people do not. Thank you. I personally think his creativity, out of the box approach & crazy licks comes from a combination of being uniquely musically gifted while also having a deep connection to the imagination of his inner child. I’m 51, grew up playing 70’s classic rock, moved onto EVH in the 80’s & others in the 90’s. By late 90’s I lost interest/inspiration in guitar based music & found enjoyment in other genres. I stopped playing for a decade. I 1st heard of BH during his stint in GnR ~2002. I eventually decided to delve into his enormous 30 yr library & what I found was music so varied in style, tone & emotion. I finally saw him live do the 1st time 2019 tour. To watch a guitar god walk out on stage & just play amazing music for 2 hours without saying a word was mind blowing. It was so refreshing to finally see what a more humble approach to fame looked like. This reignited my passion for guitar & inspired me to start playing again, that is a powerful thing. Anyway, I apologize, I’ve gone on way too long. You’ve got a new subscriber & big fan. I look forward to any future content you have time to upload. Cheers David!

His "Psychobuddy" column in Guitar Player was a favorite of mine. Joe Gore of that magazine kinda found him and introduced him to the guitar community through the magazine. He was unknown and when I'd tell my friends about him and the whole "chicken coop" and KFC bucket thing they thought I'd lost my mind. I would tell guys in all seriousness, "yeah, there's this bad-ass guitar played named Buckethead, and they call him that because he wears a KFC bucket on his head..." and they'd laugh at me hysterically. I wasn't a laughingstock for long when they actually heard him play. I'd been a EVH nut and was in a rut when The Bucket came along and re-invigorated my interest in playing. Sure glad he came along when he did!

Some of those tapping licks almost sound like from loony toons. I’m not sure how much a fan I am, I really like Soothsayer but I’m not prepared for his more esoteric work. If you’re familiar with David Torn, it’s almost that sort of “I’m not sure it’s music but I like it” kind of thing.
