As an occasional science teacher one of my pet peeves is how the "Newton and the apple" story is routinely condensed to the point where the real story is completely lost and all that's left is "An apple fell and Newton called it gravity", which is stupid- any caveman knew that when an apple detached from a tree, a force pulled it to the ground. For anyone interested in the real story, Newton lived roughly a century after Copernicus and Galileo had found that the planets orbit the sun. By this time scientists figured the planets must be held in orbit by a force between the sun and planets, and they knew how to calculate the centrifugal force on an object in a circular path. By looking at the (relative) distances from the sun to the various planets, and the speed with which they orbited the sun, they could calculate the (relative) forces, and found that it decreased with the square of the distance between the sun and planet. What Newton added to this is that he considered the apple, and the moon orbiting the earth. From the moon's orbit, he knew the centrifugal/gravitational force pulling the moon towards the earth, and recalculated for an object near the earth's surface, and found that it matched the force on the apple. So the force that had been known on earth since the days of the cavemen was shown to be the same that was holding the planets in orbit around the sun.

Not to mention that he made many contributions apart from describing gravity -- the laws of motion, calculus, numerical analysis, fluid dynamics, and the spectrum of light come to mind.

Tonight's Corrections was made FOR ME!!! And Seth, thank you for sharing your unfiltered brain with us jackals each week! 🐾❤️💜 "Only problem...hard to find." "No, this is just a prop." So hard to predict where they'll land 🤣🗺 Squiggy saying "Hello" sent me hurtling back to a childhood memory of watching afterschool reruns of Laverne & Shirley, nurturing my nascent dream to one day work in a soda bottling factory with my best gal pal! 🎶💄🥾🧤 Bad, Bad Leroy Brown was my dad's favorite 8-track to play in the car, so hearing "Well the two men got to fighting, And when they pulled them from the floor, Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple'a pieces gone." 🧩🤕 This lyric is legitimately why I never got into fights in school. @@schempgirl1 Just remind yourself that being new and getting yelled at is how it goes for most new jobs, and it won't be long at all until you're the one who knows everything, and you're watching some newb screwing it all up and you'll be remembering how it was for you back in those days. And then, to break the chain of yelling, you'll be the one to calmly tell them what was wrong and how to fix it next time, and you'll tell them them a story of some mistake you made to make them feel better, and the world will be a better place. And then when they're the one who knows everything, they'll remember how great you were when they were new and struggling, and they'll pass that on to the next new person. @@BWintJack Newton's understanding of physics is sufficient to at least get him to mid-20th century photography and filmography with a little outside help. I feel like the notion that photonic excitation can induce electro-potential in solid materials, and that the topology and composition of said objects can be used as a medium for complex computational methods, resulting in the storage and transfer of information in replicable electrical forms and multiple kinds of material storage methods may just wind up looking like magic to him though. And that'd just lead him straight back to alchemy, which... I mean... there aren't many alchemy rehab facilities left anymore.

This Mac Tonight murder baby is the perfect symbol for the Jackal: a deranged mind so dedicated that they'll spend as long as they need typing a comment or sending a custom horror package, if it means that Seth will have scary/creepy/annoying invasive thoughts about what they sent or corrected him on. As it happens, you're accidentally correct in saying that Sir Isaac Newton would be more interested in how she came down if a naked woman fell into his lap, as Newton reportedly had no romantic relationships his entire life and died a virgin. He even outright ended a friendship over a dirty joke about a nun, such was his prudishness.
@S.Pociecha Жыл бұрын
Correctness is a feature, not a fluke! And Sir I believed in fairies, so the "prudery" act was more like homoerotic self-punishment. I had a teacher like that.

I became a Seth Addict during the 2020 Pandemic. I was peripherally aware of him before that, and had watched him in front of his audience on several occasions, but in the depths of that endless lock-down despair, I stumbled upon his wasp infested attic cam-comedy and found myself clinging to the beam of laughter he provided... I got to really understand what great comedians can do for us when we need it the most. And here's my two cents: I think that during the pandemic, Seth emerged as the reigning king of silent-room comedy. Sure, Colbert and Kimel were having a crack at it, but Seth had every trump card in his corner: humility, compassion, generosity... and he's a master of absurdist humor. (The sea captain & his wooden friends were the simplest, and most comforting characters in those dark days.) Seth is in many ways the last of his kind in a long standing tradition of Catskills comedians -- which is now a disappearing art form, as millennial comedians have all become tv preachers, often skirting jokes to instead proffer intellectual gospel. But what I wanted to say is that Seth really mastered his delivery style during the pandemic, playing to an empty rooms with occasional cackle from the staff. With every joke landing in silence, with no feedback, he became a master at holding it all on his shoulders and I think this has perfected his comedy now that he has returned to an audience. In "Surprise Inspection" the bad jokes become infinitely superior to the good ones - Who else can claim this? He is now able to fly through "Corrections" which to me is one of the greatest, most innovative comedy bits since Gervais's The Office, or Andy Kaufman's sideways, mind bending act. Kudos Seth Meyers and your team, who often gets credited! And thank you.

You're actually completely right about Newton; he would definitely have ignored a naked woman. Newton was famously misogynistic, in fact, he apparently had no interest in any kind of sex. He avoided women his whole life. Near the end of his life, he said he was proud that he would die a virgin. So, yeah.

@EmpyreanLightASMR Жыл бұрын
lmao. this is actually done with MANY things in audio editing. when you watch a movie with a car chase, you're probably not hearing that car's actual engine. Definitely not hearing that car's tires screeching. Almost everything is replaced with a better sound. But the red-tailed hawk is definitely up there as the greatest "find" in Hollywood audio. Whoever did it first did a good job!
