While I don't disagree on either point, it seems like ranked-choice voting (called "preferential" voting here in Australia) often devolves into a two-party system anyway, mostly due to those already involved in running the system having a burning desire to continue running it. We've had preferential voting in Australia for over one hundred years, but at the polls and in the media we effectively have a two-party system thanks to the fact that allocation of preference votes for minor parties and independant candidates are typically split very clearly down ideological party lines, and many deals are done behind closed doors to try and secure those preference votes for one or the other major party/coalition in marginal or swing seats (roughly equivalent to counties in the American system). So we wind up, for example, with a situation where Labor (the supposedly progressive left-wing "workers party") will do a preference deal with the Green Party candidate in a marginal seat to woo progressive voters who are concerned about climate change and sustainability, but they'll never actually enact any of the promised policies (or if they do they'll be severely hobbled) because a large percentage of their voter base in solid Labor seats are blue-collar workers who love their big SUV and their fishing boat and their K-mart shopping trips with a stop at the McDonalds drive-thru afterwards. Those voters think the Greenies are a bunch of crazy hippies who want to put them out of a job. So Labor must tread the fine line and try not to piss off either group, and the best way of doing that often seems to be "do nothing". The major "moderate conservative coalition" party does the same with minor party/independent candidates on their side of the fence. Compare the advertising budgets available to the major parties vs. minors/independants, and you end up with a two-horse race. It gives an appearance of broad representation and proper choice because there's more than two parties listed on the ballot, but all the time you know that a vote for anyone other than the two major parties will just end up going to one of them anyway, and few if any of the actual policy platforms you'd like to vote for will ever be enacted in their promised form. The best thing the US could do to immediately improve its political system is to make voting compulsory.
@tannerwilson48432 жыл бұрын
We need much stricter protocol for background checks BEFORE A POLITICAL CANDIDATE IS ALLOWED ON THE BALLOT. Once a potential candidate files to run, they should be required to go under an extensive background check, character witness interviews from those that know them best and a lot more. If they find to many red flags, they candidacy can be rejected and would be banned from running anywhere else. It could get rid of many of these issues.
@arthurdent92812 жыл бұрын
There are some better methods of voting, so don't get hung up on ranked choice. Systems like approval voting or STAR voting can be better, as ranked choice can still suffer from many of the issues of FPTP. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5myZ52cfbV5h7c

@@jisundergroundfornow2548 Well, I think that the Republican Party is too far gone to be saved. Keep in mind that the GOP adopted its notorious "Southern strategy" of deliberately wooing white racists more than 50 years ago. This isn't a new development, although it's been getting worse and worse. Both Romney and McCain joined the Republican Party _after_ that "Southern strategy" was party policy. They knew what the GOP was like when they joined it (certainly by the time they ran for office). They knew the party was _deliberately_ using racism for political advantage, but they joined it, anyway. For a half century now, the guiding policy of the Republican Party has been the willingness to do pretty much _anything_ for political power. Well, I say "pretty much," because I used to assume that they'd draw the line at treason. No more. These days, I'm convinced that there is nothing - literally *nothing* - Republicans won't do for political power. And again, it _started_ with deliberately using racism for political power.
