Anti-jackal... or possibly a jackal-ception, I don't even know which anymore: Modern crossbows fire arrows, and it's only because of Dungeons and Dragons that you believe otherwise. Both bolts and quarrels were only used for a specific purpose that have been outmoded by technology: bolts had blunted ends so as not to cause too much damage during hunting; quarrels were shorter and heavier so as to be more useful in crude medieval crossbows but even back in the Renaissance we figured out how to make crossbows that could be long enough to fire a standard arrow. Gary Gygax even admitted, in retrospect, that he shouldn't have added the differentiation, as it set people's idea of medieval weaponry back by quite a bit (as is proven by this video); but he wanted to make crossbows sound more exotic. There was also the small fact that he worried about crossbows being overpowered, and, hilariously, couldn't get the idea that players tying 50 of the things together, trigger-to-trigger, in the back of a wagon and going dragon-hunting out of his head. Assigning different, more expensive ammunition to crossbows helped alleviate that.

I'd say rpg video games are where most people are getting it from these days it's pretty common to have crossbows using bolts in those. Although I'm sure the origins for that ammo type choice came from D&D .
@JamesCalbraith2 жыл бұрын
yeah I'm gonna need some citations for that, because it sounds urban-mythy and crossbow missiles have been called various relations of "bolt" in languages other than English (Bolzen, bełt) long before Gygax.
@danielgehring74372 жыл бұрын
@@JamesCalbraith I wish I could, but sadly this channel blocks links. It's easy to google, though: "do crossbows" even auto-completes with "use arrows". By modern definitions, a 'bolt' is less than 16" long and/or has no vanes (feathers), both of which would make them unacceptably inaccurate for modern competitions or hunting.

Boromir, Theodin, Smiegal, and Sauron are the big character deaths in LOTR. Although, you could interpret Gandalf, Frodo, Bilbo, Elron, and the elves leaving on the ship at the end of Return of the King as deaths, since Frodo never healed from being stabbed in Fellowship (not to mention them saying that it was end of the age of elves). 🧙🏻♀️

Yes, I always took "sailing off into the West" as a euphemism
@thomasjohnson35442 жыл бұрын
So I'm going to be that nerd: Gandalf and the elves don't die. At all. Even if you physically kill them they don't die, their spirits still go to Valinor, they just go to the halls of mandos to reconstitute, and then they can rejoin the elves. However time moves differently in Valinor so when other beings like hobbits, or dwarves go to Valinor they age faster but they can be healed of their pains there and die peacefully, it's the only way for a living ring bearer to find peace. So it's only a euphemism for death for the hobbits but for the elves and Gandalf they literally can't die so or them it's just another life on a beautiful and peaceful continent with their gods

CORRECTION: Since Seth films his show during the day he wouldn't have to "be home sick" to watch Wheel of Fortune which airs in the evening. He's probably thinking of the Price is Right.

A way to remember: fewer is for individual things making up a group. So if you can individually remove one or more then use "fewer". But if you can only reduce what's there like pouring out a liquid, use less. -There are fewer bricks than yesterday. Guess we need less mortar. We have fewer lemons today. We'll have less lemonade to sell.

So the Gibson was the favorite drink of Sandra Bullock's character in the extremely 90s film, The Net. It even has lines explaining the drink and it's a plot point and everything. This is because she is supposed to be a sort of cyberpunk character, making it a nod to the author William Gibson, who is a pioneering author in the cyberpunk genre. This is not a correction, this is just me trying to validate my life by getting other people, someone, anyone, to think that I am smart and clever because of my ability to remember useless trivia. Aren't you glad you took the time to read this comment, Seth?

"this is just me trying to validate my life by getting other people, someone, anyone, to think that I am smart and clever because of my ability to remember useless trivia. " spiny echidnas have 4 penises.
Seth didn't read this, but I did, and it's my favorite comment in this week's Corrections thread. Why? Because knowing that Sandra Bullock drank Gibsons in The Net, AND that it was even a plot point, is perhaps the most useless bit of info I've ever heard. Outstanding, soldier.
