the thing that still blows my mind about this movie, to this day, is that Catherine Zeta-Jones was pregnant during filming. the fact that she was able to perform all of that incredible physical choreography while pregnant is a testament to her determination as an actress. speaking of tenacity, apparently, Richard Gere was so dedicated to his role that he would stay after hours to practice the tap dancing number until it was perfect. he insisted on doing it all himself. absolute legend! 😃

@o.b.7217 how? by mentioning that it’s amazing that she could perform so well physically while pregnant? pregnancy isn’t an illness but it does heavily impact the body and makes physical exertion tough. it can cause back pain, swollen joints, swollen feet and ankles, as well as nausea. it’s not an illness, but I applaud anyone who can can do the stunts and choreography she did in this movie while enduring all of that extra strain on her body.

Fun little story: John C Reilly came to my high school in 2004 because he graduated from there. He came to my last class for the day, and I sang the chorus from his solo song from Chicago. In my head, I imagined he heard me 😂

I think Catherine Zeta Jones well deserved her Oscar since she did a lot of those routines whilst pregnant. That is incredible. ❤

Looove Queen Latifah in this! Her big number is a show-stealer. The original Billy Flynn on Broadway back in the ‘70s was Jerry Orbach, and Michael Berresse, who I was in high school plays with, played Fred Kasely in the ‘90s revival and then took over the role of Billy when the first actor left the show.

Can we take some time to appreciate how great the editing is in this movie? The cuts from fantasy to reality are perfect. A well-deserved Oscar for the editors.

I love that it works both as comentary on the entertainment industry through a crime analogy but also as a commentary on crime through an entertainment industry analogy. Ultimately, it's a cynical but accurate take that the only commodity that matters in the world is fame/infamy.

In 1999 I was in Las Vegas and I went to see the Crazy Girls review at the Riviera. They performed the Cell Block Tango, topless! Thing is, at the time. I didn't know what it was they were doing. It wasn't until I saw the movie that I got it. 😂

I love this movie! Chicago and Moulin Rouge are in many ways responsible for the return of the movie musical to theaters. They never 100% disappeared, but after the heyday in the 1930-50s ended they were few and far between. Both doing so well at the box office and garnering Oscar attention helped convince studios that musicals were worth making again. Additionally, here is some trivia for you. 1. The 1996 revival of Chicago on Broadway (which is still running) is the second longest running show in Broadway history. Phantom of the Opera is still winning by over 3,000 performances though. 2. Catherine Zeta Jones insisted on the short wig instead of the longer hair production initially wanted, because she didn't want there to be any confusion about whether it was actually her dancing.

I hadn't seen the show before so this movie was my introduction back when it first released, and I loved it to bits. Catherine Zeta-Jones is phenomenal. You just can't take your eyes off the screen when she's on it, especially during the musical numbers. I was thrilled to see the show on Broadway about 12 or so years ago with Adam Pascal as Billy. He absolutely nailed it! That said, I hope RENT is on your list of musicals!

Mine too. It's really strange, I know nobody in real life who has that kind of experience. It feels like nobody ever looks at me. Not in a good way, but not in a bad way either. It can be an advantage, I never get harassed in public transport for example. But it's also very painful to try your best to be social and engage with other people, and by the end of the night you stand there and look around, and everybody is talking and laughing with each other, and you have the sudden thought that if you collapsed then and there, nobody would even turn their head.

You mentioned about this could have been a courtroom drama. Back in the golden days of Hollywood (30s-50s), they did a straight film called ROXIE HART that starred Ginger Rogers. I guess you could say this is Chicago without the music.
