I broke one of the drive pulleys for my lathe, and had to get creative in order to fix it, using my milling machine as a lathe to turn it true.

I love those moments when fixing a tool could really use the tool your fixing.

It would help a lot to set that broken pulley on a firebrick instead of directly on the steel plate. Thanks for taking us along!

More than one way to skin a cat. That actually turned out to be a good looking fix in the end. Nice work.

This is another great example of why I tell people that if you can have only one machine tool in the shop, get a mill. Lathes are also must haves, but a mill is more "must-er", hahaha

Clearly the take-away is that if this had been a more-complicated feature to repair, you would be in trouble. A second lathe must be added to the capabilities in your shop... :)

Would have been a perfect time to use silver solder. Not to be confused with plumbing stuff. It's actually braze as well, but whets in like solder. It's what the carbide teeth on saw blades and lathe tooling are held on with. As strong as the brass brazing, it just not need a large gap like brass or bronze. Just flux the joint and let it whet into the joint. Very effective!

Exactly what I was thinking. No grinding needed.

Thanks, I broke a couple of teeth on the back gear of my lathe and was considering whether to use silver solder or braze. Now I know👍👍

Your other lathe, AKA the vertical machining center? You need to make bumper stickers, "My other lathe is a mill". The pulley repair ended up looking nice.

A milling machine, a drill press, both can be used as a lathe in pinch. Well done 👍👍👍. Thank you for sharing. Be safe 🇨🇦

I haven't had a need for a mill yet, but I would certainly use it to rebuild the shafts in my old Clausing 🤣. The input shaft is a little rough...

Nice fix, I may have ground off the flange and bolted a plate steel disc to it! Not having a oxy actetalene..

Great! You got a result. I think I would have used a much smaller torch and lead-tin solder. No need for that much heat or strength. Could have positioned the piece better and had very little cleanup, just needs a light file.

If you are going to use a mill as a lathe, chuck that damn tool in the vise with minimal stickout... The facing cut was shit only because of that... I have had to use my baby emco FB2 mill for a similar bodge-job, and i used a carbide insert holder in a vise, spun the part at 2krpm after balancing it somewhat beforehand... The cuts that baby mill took were as fine as as those from an excellent condition monarch, at least in regards to surface finish... The dimensional accuracy was not an issue really, so i didnt check since the part fit perfectly, but the point is, hold that damn tool properly in the vise and you will get a marvelous finish and a great result... That much stickout on the mill or even on a lathe is only really appropriate for a boring bar... Not trying to shit on the work, its just a constructive advice for anyone who gets into this kinda situation where they need to mill-turn something... Its not as sketchy as it seems, and can be an overwhelmingly nice experience, especially with a dro, as then the cuts are easier to follow properly... And do lock the damn slideways of any axis that isnt used for the operation... You will be surprised at how good a mill can be as a turning machine... All the best and kind regards!

If you listen very carefully, it's the universe telling you to get a second lathe.

That section likely won't see heavy loads so metal epoxy/jbweld would have worked in a pinch. However, nice to see how involved a proper fix is.

I agree. If it were a V-belt pulley, it would be another story. A flat-belt pulley only has to hold the belt against tracking forces in the Z axis.
@JeremyMakesThings
@JeremyMakesThings 9 ай бұрын
That certainly would have been an option. In reality, if the belt is tracking properly it should never see any loads, I mostly wanted to put it back on to keep the pulley balanced.
@mhdm
@mhdm 9 ай бұрын
@@JeremyMakesThings I meant gluing the broken section back on with a very thin section of epoxy. The pulley would still be decently balanced.
@JeremyMakesThings

That steel bench was just sucking the heat right out of the workpiece. You might of been better off with something that had a thermally insulating characteristic. I felt your pain when you flipped it over to braze and the chunk just fell off.
