Not at all, you can use the same mortar for both. We recommend a product high in polymer content like our 254 PLATINUM, MULTIMAX Lite, or 4XLT.

I have 4XLT leftover and was going to.use that to fill in the holes on the mat but I won't be able to tile today. Can I just put my 4XLT thinset over dried 4XLT thinset?

Hello! Thanks for your message. It is perfectly acceptable to skim coat the mat with the 4XLT and tile over it the next day. It is actually recommended to do this as well if the mat will be left exposed for for more than 72 hours.

@laticrete what happens if you leave it uncovered for more than 72 hours. I still need to lay out my tile to see what is the best way for them to go in the bathroom.

@@jgkrus If left uncovered for that extended period of time, you chance the surface becoming contaminated or damaged in an active jobsite which could inhibit the ability for a mortar to properly bond to the surface. Skimming the mat will protect against this, and it would still be recommended to wipe down the skimmed surface with a damp sponge to clean up any contaminants before tiling the surface just as you would a concrete substrate.

Why would one want moisture to be drawn out of the mortar? It doesn't dry, rather is a chemical reaction which requires the water. Indeed, best to cover mortar (or concrete) after it begins curing and keep it damp.

Of course we wouldn't want to draw out moisture too soon, we want the mortar to remain properly hydrated throughout the curing process to achieve proper strength. But, allowing the product to breathe in the installation will allow for this process to be achieved more quickly even with a mortar that's highly polymer modified.

Do you not seal the seams between the pieces of stratamat?

No need to seal the seams. Just make sure you install adjacent sections of STRATA_MAT being sure to line edges of each section without leaving any gaps. Around the 4:22 mark will show and explain exactly what to do when two sheets are lined up next to each other.

Hi. How thick is this mat? I'm looking at 3/8" or 1/4" tile. I have 1/2" wood flooring to match to. Also, any concern for cracking grout, for laundry room vibrations? Thanks.

It is 1/8” (3 mm)

If the floor meets deflection, the tile has good coverage and has cured sufficiently, then there should be no concern for cracking grout and vibrations.

Can you use the 253 Gold to bond strata to concrete?

Yes. Per the datasheet: "Install STRATA_MAT™ to the substrate using the appropriate ANSI A118.4, ANSI A118.11 or ANSI A118.15 mortar". 253 Gold exceeds ANSI A118.4, A118.11 and ISO 13007-1 (C2).
