Latin Dance: A NEW WAY TO INTERACT - Switching and experimenting BEYOND BOUNDARIES of gender roles

What could we do with our bodies and how could we create choreographies, if we didn't perform restricted heteronormative roles in Latin Dance? This video is the culmination of a small but very important step in our "Queering Dancesport" project, an ongoing research aimed at investigating the impact of restrictive heteronormative gender roles in the DanceSport scene and of identifying new forms of narrative and interaction between bodies in Latin dance.
The first dance is a Rumba/Contemporary. When combining Latin (basic) and contemporary (improv) there is not much knowledge, it becomes very unpredictable. It is important that we learn to give more space to improvisation when training as Latin dancers. The second part of the video shows a more structured samba: samba is not so heteronormative per se, we feel. It was fantastic and easy to play around and switch.
The research was conducted by Harpy Fatale and myself in Berlin, for approximately three weeks. In each rehearsal we tried to investigate a few questions. We were our own "guinea pigs" this time, but we do aim to open up and extend our research with workshops for dancers and teachers.
