This is a classic example of a contestant being super talented, gifted. Salman Ali nailed it in his win of the 2018 Indian Idol Season 10. He hails from a family of 4 generations of musicians performing to earn a living, he is from very humble beginnings. He began and was exposed to singing very young at religious singing group events called Jagrans. This lovely song is in Hindi called Sajda (prostrate in prayer) lyricist is Niranjan Iyengar from the movie My name is Khan sung by all legends Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shankar Mahadevan (song composer with Ehsaan & Loy) & Richa Sharma. The judges are Vishal Dadlani, Neha Kakkar and Anu Malik. All the judges sing and compose music, write lyrics in the Indian film industry. Salman Ali has already sung for films, shows, independent music etc.

You can appreciate people without demeaning others. And don't forget the people sitting on the judges panel are the ones who create music and give chances to there not so well-known singers. and if you are targetting Neha then remember she had to sing in jagrata as a child to survive and she is here now. And you are still typing on the youtube comment demeaning others. Do better.

@@rjajay1 well if some undeserving sits on top while a lot of deserving singers and musicians are still struggling, then hate is quite inevitable. Is Neha a bad musician? NO But she is definitely not a great one for the amount of fame she recieved in a short duration only because of the kind of audience we have here.

Indian music and dance recognize nine emotions or states of the mind, ideally referred to as Ras. Shringar Ras (love), Hasya Ras (laughter), Shaant Ras (tranquility), Adbhut Ras (wonder), Veer Ras (bravery), Bhayanak Ras (fear), Karunya Ras (sorrow), Bhibhitsa Ras (disgust), Raudra Ras (anger). So the music, Songs and Dances were performed for all emotions.

I think he mentions in that video further that singing is his family heirloom and his ancestors were singers in royal court. I could be wrong. But we certainly have musical families like that in India, singing since the times of kings and queens 500 years back. I too have my ancestral tree at home going back to 600 years, they were all traders till the time of British colonialism (like 80 years ago) until my great grandfather changed to being in government service.

Although indian music starts from spirituality, there has always been branches to it, not only singing but also dancing to your loved ones, god, nature, animals etc., is super common in indian music, acting or as a whole performance industry. Which is why you find indian singing unique, we add complicated emotions like being shy, a whole ass conversation sometimes, quarell etc in singing which you generally won't find in most other countries music, although there might be a few like thai, since there is a huge indian influence on that country, otherwise no clue. If you want to understand how complicated or interconnected everything is you defenitely have to check out episodes about Bharatanatyam from the channel Shivoham, although it is about an indian dance form. I would definetly love to see you guys exploring indian classical dances as well, its whole different world, the music to those dances are going to be a treat to Efra, since he is more into percussions.

Music has always been the language of love in India(actually everywhere) but here in India the initial melodies comes from Samaveda written in Sanskrit language (from around 4000-5000 BCE) which is composed basically for showing love to deity (god's and Goddess), mother earth, nature etc. The impact of Sanskrit on Hindi language(majority of singing is done in Hindi in India) is so deep that due to usage of Sanskrit, the songs or melody's get the texture of divinity and magical touch in the classical music scene.

A good reaction. 👍 Trying to answer few of your questions or wondering. 1. In India music is not a seperate entity. What I meant to say is we connect to music at every situation. It can be spiritual, devotional, happy, romance, pain, celebration of any kind. It is just that one cannot seperate music from the real life . 2. Yes, we do have many forms of folk music, folk tales.

The original version of this song was sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Richa Sharma and composed by Shankar Mahadevan for the movie "My Name is Khan." You should watch "Madari" from Coke Studio - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gl6cpGekibGGmqM PS: India has 22 official languages and Hindi is the most spoken one followed by Tamil and Bengali. PPS: Most Bollywood songs ARE romantic, serenading used to be a big part of the black & white era of Bollywood, there are a lot of romantic songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s that are still popular, although the serenading in the movies has died down.

13:53 Does India have these unstructured yet structured, free flowing but regimented, love and romance based serenades made to showcase vocal ability and sound? YES. RESOUNDINGLY, THAT'S A YES. It's SO CULTURALLY PERVASIVE. So much of our music is based on this! ALMOST EVERY SINGLE Bollywood song before the late 90s (when India opened up economically to the rest of the world and first started importing films/music) is a romance song. Straight up. In addition, Muslim people in both Pakistan and India sing religious music, where they DESCRIBE THEIR CONNECTION TO GOD IN THE SAME TERMS AS THEIR CONNECTION TO A LOVER. Those aren't even compositions - just beautiful, poetic, ROMANTIC lyrics like "I became a bride in Your (God's) gaze" from literally hundreds of years ago, and then singers from then AND ALSO FROM TODAY will just pick a raag and just sing their heart out however they want inside the confines of that raag. 100% improv. And they are also absolutely trying to showcase their talent while doing it, just as much as getting lost in it. Terms to look up: Sufi music - Muslim devotional music which makes a point of accepting all faiths and being very liberal in general Hindustani Classical - Much like how opera is the singing style that is part of Western Classical, and every western pop song today is foundationally written based on that historical context, Hindustani Classical is the classical music native to North India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and parts of eastern Afghanistan. Bollywood music is not classical music. Not by a long shot (and actual old school Hindustani classical musicians would probably get offended if you even implied this). But the reason Bollywood sounds so different is that even though Bollywood is fun, modern, popular music that is heavily influenced by popular western music - it is STILL based on the historical and contextual foundation of CLASSICAL. HINDUSTANI. MUSIC. Carnatic Classical - It is also a school of Classical Music, native to South India and Sri Lanka. It has the same root as Hindustani classical, but they are still different in many ways (similar to how Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism are equally old, started in the same place, and share a lot of similarities - but it was long ago and they are each their own thing now). I imagine probably Tollywood, Kollywood, and the other South Indian music industries are built in this context - but tbh I don't know bc I am not South Indian!!! Indian Folkloric music - there's literally hundreds of these. Each and every region has their own music in their own language. These are not classical - this is basically ancient popular music, intended for the masses. And the lack of easy transport for common people meant that each region developed their own thing. Amit Trivedi is famous for being inspired by this type of music and putting it into his Bollywood arrangements (remember the last video you reacted to in the initial Indian Music Feature Friday? With the mouth noises at the beginning and the crazy multi-stringed violin type thing? That was an Amit Trivedi song). Another example is the bhangra music that you guys are already familiar with in the UK (Efra's initial hazy thoughts of what Indian music was like). Anyway I have rambled too much. If you read this far Efra and Wale, I'm honoured.

In India, we treat Judges or say gurus very respectfully....they are literally intangible......we treat them as our parents or between parents and God...... So, in India, there is no such thing like 'hooking' as u say ....between a guru and the contestant.....(the chances are extremely rare, though sometimes u may find out some exceptions but its not acceptable in Indian society).... Pls dont wear Western glasses to look at us........we are way more colorful but every colour knows its limit.......we respect our gurus alot , even if they are younger than us.....we pay equal respects to them as well....we touch their feet to show our respect and gratitude to them .....

Flamenco of Spain is by the Romani gypsies, who were the wandering tribes of musical entertainers from India which also included acrobats, psychics, and highly skilled metal workers as well. No wonder you see a similarity between Indian folk singers and Spanish singers. Salman Ali is from a family of such singers who were converted to islam a few generations ago but have roots in traditional Indian folk music. You guys are amazing, love your analyses and intelligent reactions👍👍👍

You are right about that one, in India Music has been focused towards Self-cultivation and spirituality. Oldest record is in veda called 'Samaveda' which talks about the music in depth about melodies and chants and its impact on human body, right down to the mathematical portion of it. India has culture beyond 15k year old atleast it can be easily more than 20k but back then everything was passed down orally so most of what was there is lost and so were most of the proof. Himalayas provided us with Natural defense against Invaders so we were in peace except for internal conflicts of states. During those periods alot of culture was developed in the decadent past when cities were flourishing with gold and our trade of spices and clothing was one of the top global export until Islamic and British Invasions destroyed it all. Music was also developed in tandem of everything and it was cultivated further through generations. After British left, Indian film industry helped keep music alive and because of it we have Legends like Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar who sang alot of songs in their time and became legends. Music became a common part of life but the original intent of using it to cultivate self and move towards spirituality is left out for the most part except for the classical who have a very heavy base in it. There is no classical without spirituality. But the general interest in classical was rare, everyone wanted to just sing a song for a movie. Hence there were a million love songs. India still had a very solid base for its music industry and thanks to piggybacking Film industry by putting 3-4 songs in every movie, you now have a situations where actually the music sells the film, not the other way around since music spreads like wildfire and it automatically generates interest. This is why every Movie has a song or three in it at all times, they then put in some movie clippings and post it and people watch it and get interested in film and buy it or watch it in cinema. This has become a compulsory practice and has also fed Dance industry who thrives off music industry. You have a dance in every film accompanied with song, and a Item number which is basically a dance which puts forward sex appeal to attract audience, these also are one of the ways to market the film and part of every Masala film which is actually just a standard formula film made for entertainment without much regard for depth of story. It is usually carried off by big name actors like Salman Khan who make it profitable by acting in it. All of the industries are interlinked in a way that it benefits eachother. Hence the film Industry is actually bunch of many industries put together which mutually benefit eachother in one way or the other. You would find one of the oldest songs about spirituality like Nirvana shatakam, which is more of ascertaining that what I am not and what I am to incredibly uplifting and empowering in your life if you understand it. Alot of these songs, Bhajans and chants hit you so hard that people tend to start crying intensely or atleast have tears flowing their eyes because they are designed in a certain manner. There are songs of Devotion, even those writern by Evildoer Ravana who was supposedly King of Lanka even he is celebrated for his song he devoted to Shiva which still lives on in modern culture...its called "Shiva Tandava Strotam". There are songs of pure intellect like Nirvana shatakam by Adi Shankaracharya which is cutting away everything with his intelligence to find what he is truly and giving you the answer to age old question of "Who am I?". India is not just about Bollywood, Dances and Love songs. It has very deep spiritual roots which persists despite Britishers attempts to uproot it and throw India into chaotic identity crisis. This has been one of the big reasons why India has neither been too great in dealing with west nor east because its own identity was in a crisis by itself. India is slowly returning back to its roots and bringing out what it had lost, all that knowledge of Music, arts, astrology, astronomy, medicine that we had when world was still out hunting with spears, the very basis of it has been deeply embedded in nation's culture devised by Sages. This is why its impossible to understand India unless one truly lives through the culture and becomes a part of it.

Omg the people saying they talk too much are so annoying. All you want to hear and see is their expressions of surprise and that's it, for that just keep skipping ahead to the exact point of reaction, it's not that hard. Sometimes when I'm in hurry but still quickly wanna watch a video I also do so. But a lot of us are here to also listen to what they have to say and we LOVE that they have a lot to say about it and want to learn about it! Waleska and Efra, I know there are a lot of people saying that and maybe it's discouraging but please, don't hold back from saying what you think, there are a lot of us who love hearing all your thoughts!

Ok few more point of info… Song name is ‘Sajda’. It is from Bollywood movie, “My name is Khan”. Movie itself is great and was a hit. Salman Ali, after winning said that he owes his success to Shah Rukh Khan’s movie song “Sajda” (Shah Rukh is main lead in that movie not the singer, enormously famous actor ). Quite humble of Salman Ali to say that. But we know this piece is one of his best performances and “Sajda” is a song that truly fits to his style that’s why he was able to bring his potential out to all of us in the best way. So song kinda deserves credit haha.

Just for your information Hindi (from India) and Urdu (from Pakistan) are as close to eachother as spanish from spain and spanish from latin america. For example in spain we use Vosotros, in Latin america Ustedes. These minor differences are there between Hindi and Urdu. But they can perfectly communicate among themselves
