In high school, I found out one of my friends was gay. The ensuing conversation went like this. "So are you really gay?" "Yup." "Okay then." The issue is largely that many people say something pretty hateful and then try to pass it off as "just a joke" (usually followed by "your generation has no sense of humor or some garbage depending on how old they are) when it's clearly not. If people hear enough from other's talking about their personal circumstances like this, they aren't exactly going to feel accepted or willing to be open, and will likely be less inclined to take a piece of humor as anything but an attack (because it so often is). It's just a shame that so many people hide behind an excuse of humor to the point that it's caused such an adverse reaction. You should able to joke about anything, even darker matters, as long as it's in somewhat good taste. Unfortunately many people just being straight assholes has had a knee jerk effect where effected communities are just totally intolerant to even joke's, which is kind of understandable honestly. It's less people like you or Dave, more the portion of the population that has legitimate homophobia.
