What's a launch pad lick? It's a lick that can help launch you into an improv solo with a really strong beginning. The idea behind the launch lick is to give you a starting point with your improv. In this video, I show you a 2 measure blues lick that can be used to start a solo or connect phrases during the solo. And of course like every lick I show you, I teach you how to play it in different keys.
SKYPE LESSONS: Yes, I give Skype lessons! And, if you sign up for one (or more) you will see immediate results. From tone, and tonguing to style and improv, I can help get you headed in the right direction. For more info contact me via: www.scottpaddock.com or through Instagram @scottpaddocksax

You made it so easy to understand. I’ll look for that lick in some of your You Tube videos. That lick goes so well with your style of improvs... it’s kind of like a Scott Paddock autograph. Do you have a sheet with some of your usual licks?

When you were younger and wanted to play your licks in all keys, did you write them out or did you just figure them out like you did in the video?
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 4 жыл бұрын
I'd usually write out the scale degrees. So it would look something like this: 5 1 b3 3 4 5 b7 4 Then I would look at it and transpose it into different keys, I never wrote out the lick in different keys. That would actually make for a really good tutorial!

Haha! I get complaints from the tenor people all of the time that I don't do enough tenor. I do about 90% alto, but most of those videos work for any sax.

May I ask, Scott...are you now playing a SYOS mouthpiece? Could we have your thoughts about it? Thanks in anticipation. DW

Hey Don, yes that is my signature Syos MP. I play syos tenor and soprano. I need to do a video on it. I still play a Barkley Brazil on alto.

Could someone explain using it on a dominant 7? The minor 7 makes sense to me because the F would be minor third, but would it then be #9 with a dominant 7?
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 4 жыл бұрын
You'll hear a minor 3rd over a major 3rd chord all the time when listening/transcribing music. Especially in blues. Even though the b3rd is technically the "wrong" note. It still works and sounds fine. However, you can't do the inverse. You can't play a major 3rd over a minor 3rd chord. When you do that it sounds really bad.

Not being a jazz musician, I get really confused seeing swung 8th notes combined with triplets! I tried to sense if there was a difference between the swing and a quarter + eighth triplet rhythm, but I couldn't quite tell. Do you have a guide for that or is it just feel?
@andrewcranmer9653
@andrewcranmer9653 4 жыл бұрын
I’m no expert by any stretch, but I think it’s just feel for what sounds good. If it helps seeing as a score, perhaps check out transcriptions by Charles Margarit or Remi Bolduc (on YT). Also very common is a triplet with the first note as a rest.

Swing 8ths are mostly a feel thing and they are taught several different ways all trying to get to a similar outcome. When I think swing 8ths I think: doo bah doo bah doo bah (the doo is long and the bah is short). With triplets I literally use the word triplet broken up into 3 syllables = TRI-PL-ET
