Laura Branigan - Power of Love

"Power of Love" was the second single from the 1987 album Touch , following the #13 Dance hit "Shattered Glass." Produced by Grammy -winner David Kershenbaum, Branigan's vocal brought a rawer rock edge than Rush's mutedly operatic sheen. The song was a favorite of Branigan's tosing, and it continued to appear in even abbreviated set lists throughout the rest of her life.

I always gagged on Celine Dion's version of this song because it sounds so desperate and dishonest, but Laura really sounds like she means it and makes it a powerful song with a totally different feel. I had no idea she passed away in 2004...so sad. I grew up listening to her and loved her smooth gritty voice. There's none like her.

Laura's version is very different form original Jennifer's. I think that "rock" voice of Laura best suits the meaning of this song. That's why I put Laura in front of Jennifer, even if she wrote it. Celine, her astounding voice aside, come in third place... by far!

This is the most beautifully sung song ever, it's just dazzling ... the emotion and depth, sincerity with which she sings is amazing. I am sorry I only got to learn about her now when it's too late ... although I heard all of her songs just never connected the voice with the person. But anyway her music will live forever. This should have been a huge hit for Laura. It was a hard song for stations to play sometimes for it was a ballad that was too loud for the mellow stations (back then they didn't play anything but soft songs) and too mellow for a lot of pop music stations. Kiss 108 in Boston played it a lot and it came in #1 on thier countdowns thanks to Sunny Jo White (the program director) who LOVED Laura Branigan!

What a powerful and emotional singer...a class act from the 1980's ...Such a range in her voice, many song grammy awarded, Associated with "Flashdance' and many wonderful sound tracks of a great musical time period. This "Lady" is without doubt one of the very best and will forever be remembered as such. Lets us not forget her and her efforts. One of the all time greatest singers of our time.
