Adore 3 things about you, (Dame) Laura: the way you were raised (three cheers to your proud parents!), your staying power vis-a-vis the challenges along the route and the triumphant style in which you proved the Dutch bureaucrats so myopically wrong. At my fossile age of 73 I may be closer to the geriatric extreme as a singlehander who is presently stuck at Hiva Oa by the Covid-19, however, that citcumstance in no way hinders my admiration for your achievement!

I have enjoyed your circumnavigation for allmost ten years now and never go tired of watching this. Even more so now when more of the material is relased. Of course is not allways fair winds when you sail that far but your attitude makes it seem like the sun is allways shining... You just make it seem sooo easy! As I watch a lot of youtube sailors it is easy to spot the difference between all these middle aged couples on over equiped yachts, constantly running in to trouble and a sailor in full harmony with her vessel. This in a world where age or physical strength doesnt matter, only your attitude, wit and experience! In this episode you really make a passage seem easy and attractive in the contrast of for instance Adventures of an old Seadog who was struggling for his life on this stretch. I hope you can go on to inspire people for a long time in the future and I will go on to show you example to young people that needs encouraging.

Solitary passage is so very different than the ones with many aboard, that I have been watching lately. For one thing it's so eerily quiet! I would have thought that after a few days you'd want to talk to someone, so you'd talk to the camera, describing what your were doing, your heading, the trim of your sails, your meals, anything just to talk. Even your radio communications seemed without consequence. You communicated on the clip mainly by typed words. The solitude comes through in the quietness of the video, despite the occasional added sound track. Even the few sounds of people talking once u made land were unintelligible. A very interesting experience in style and contrasts.
@TC-yx1qt4 жыл бұрын
Each video is the accumulation of about three months.. she met lots of others most likely in the anchorages and probably had lots of talking and dinners etc etc. I actually prefer this.. because it's more about the sailing and adventure vs anchored and shore life.
@awuma3 жыл бұрын
I have exactly the same reaction. The lack of a voice over, simple written explanations and long sequences of moving water make these videos a true sailor's record. They really remind me of my sailing days, terribly modest compared with what this wonderful captain has done.
@nixl35183 жыл бұрын
@@awuma Thanks for your comment. Though "voice-over" is one feature for which I agree with you completely, I was mostly talking about the actual vocalizations that one might make while on board, similar to how we all, more or less, occasionally talk to ourselves, which I consider part and parcel of the solitary experience. The quiet was too much for me which I do not think is contradictory to your observations. I felt as though Laura was actively keeping footage of her talking to herself off her episode clips. She might be self conscious as many of us have been trained to stifle solitary talking, although I have no evidence for that. Perhaps she never talks! Or maybe the issue was language choice. Even as a NZer, it's evident her native language is Dutch and is not comfy speaking English. Dutch would restrict viewership, so she decided to go mute. That's why I brought up the opportunities that she showed, of actual talking on the radio that were seemingly deliberately edited to be, completely unintelligible. I've talked to myself on solitary transits without YT or any recording devices, sometimes even arguing a point from both POV's just for fun when bored...which is a frequent hazard on a boat. :)

I watch many many sailing vlogs, and I must say, you really have a knack for passages. I think your going right from one passage to another ? Doldrums ? 15:48 ?

I don't know anything about sailing, but I'm curious, if she is alone, and on long crossings when does she sleep? Do you stop the boat to sleep or do sailboats follow a course? If so I'd be so worried that I'd wake up and be off course.
@lauradekkerworldsailing4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, There is many ways to keep a boat on course like Autopilot, windvane or with some boats you could just trim the sails right. I used a windvane, uses no power but only the wind to keep the boat on course. I would sleep one hour max. and then go outside to check for ships, course etc. And yes sometimes the wind would shift 180 degrees and I found I was sailing back ;P

feastures : I don’t think at this age you have necessary mental strength to take good decisions. I don’t think you know at this age exactly in what kind of psychological stress you expose yourself being in high seas alone.

I believe one of the worst traits of many humans is the incessant need to define everything. As in by defining/labeling things, you somehow feel more comfortable with the world around you. My main love for sailing comes from the fact that there are so few of these annoying humans around me as I learn and discover the undefinable life that will always have mysteries.
@johnappleyard41234 жыл бұрын
Darth Hader: Incessant quest for fame and hounted phantasies can make crazy parents to push their child to the breaking point. In my opinion this is an extreme reckless, an technical attempt to murder this girl. Few years ago some crazy parents pushed their daughter to take a solo passage, yachting around the world. After she doubled Cape Horn and to her good fortune not trying the Strait of Magellan, this young girl finally launched signals of distress, being recovered from south Atlantic high seas. Upon return home she refused to embrace and to speak with her father, that pushed her in this murderous voyage. If I remember correctly that girl was in more or less the same age as this child and maybe is the same girl which I read about it, a couple of years ago. Citation from internet:”The disappearance of many sailors has been blamed on something that doesn't quite seem real: hallucinations, which have even prompted sailors to believe they had reached port and to climb over the railing of their boat”. In solo navigation you can’t sleep more than 20min at the time. In case of storm and I imagine specially at night when you don’t see direction of wind and waves you can collapse easy from exhaustion and so on. The mast can broke, the sails can broke, the engine can broke, the keel can broke, the autopilot can broke. It is an ordeal for a mature person overpowering a mature experienced navigator not to mention a child. C’mon would you send your child to have such experience ?
