I find it interesting that your main / communal meal is lunch. Since you are living in the US I always assumed it was dinner. Do you think that is because of the German routes of the Bruderhof? Because in Germany, lunch is usually the main meal of the day and dinner is a lighter meal, often even a cold meal.
@LaurafromtheBruderhof3 жыл бұрын
We do have communal dinners also, but lunch is when it's easiest to have the younger school children join us.
@michellezevenaar3 жыл бұрын
I live in the Netherlands close to the German boarder and I've never heard that Germans eat a huge meal as lunch. The lunch menu at restaurants doesn't reflect lunch being important either. Spain on the other hand does often have a big lunch and light, very late, dinner.
@suzanneoleander32243 жыл бұрын
@@michellezevenaar Traditionally this is true though. The typical German "dinner" is bread, cheese and "wurst". Nowadays it might have changed a bit since women aren't staying at home cooking and the family doesn't get together at lunchtime
@stephanzander10872 жыл бұрын
Actually, there are two German words for “dinner”: “Abendessen” (evening meal) and “Abendbrot” (evening bread). Especially the second one is very telling as far as the traditional background is concerned. When I was a child, however, we had a bigger meal for dinner, because this was the time my father would come back from work. Nowadays, my wife have a warm lunch if we can manage, but if we can’t, it’ll be a warm dinner, too.

If you don't baptize children, do you believe, they still will go to heaven if they die before they are old enough to get baptized?
@LaurafromtheBruderhof3 жыл бұрын
Yes I do
@familyof10523 жыл бұрын
I cant answer for her but our family waits until someone is old enough to profess their faith to be baptized. We dont do it with the thought that it is to cover the original sin. Baptism isnt a way to get to heaven. Yes children that pass away would go to heaven. I'm sure I didnt explain it the greatest but that is what we believe. Not speaking for her but usually people that dont do baby baptisms are along those same lines.
@Speireata43 жыл бұрын
@@LaurafromtheBruderhof thanks for your answer. That is amazing. I like this way of thinking. I grew up catholic and there some people think that unbaptized children wouldn't be able to go to heaven and I always thought how stupid that is, because God loves children.
@johaanah3 жыл бұрын
@@familyof1052 in my faith we do baptise children, to welcome them into the church/as part of the church family, then once they are old enough they can decide to be confirmed and continue with the faith. Usually age 11/12 is the youngest but some people don’t get confirmed until they are much, much older, then you can take communion.

I love your videos Laura…they give me a sense of peace during hard days. I just wanted to say that as a cancer patient undergoing treatment, l don’t consider Cannabis a drug. The chemicals and steroids in chemo are drugs, the supplemental medication that the medical industry just loves to tell you that you need and are so easy to come by are hard core drugs. The medical community , are in fact, drug pushers. I find Cannabis to be an enormous pain reliever, appetite increaser, and nausea suppressants; among other things and it is very complementary to chemo. For me the chemo cocktail are my the only drugs l take. I refuse anything else and use Cannabis for all other aspects of my treatment.🥰

My question is if your clothes choices are based on modesty, why don’t women ever wear trousers? They cover you up but are way more comfortable than long skirts
@LaurafromtheBruderhof3 жыл бұрын
That would probably be fine but we're used to skirts
@melfros71003 жыл бұрын
Mary Mc I think part of the answer is that the sister's skirt, like her long hair, differentiates her from the male brother. You may have noticed that, in contrast to women, most men wear their hair quite short. On the other hand, when Bhof H School women engage in competitive athletic events such as volleyball, running or soccer, they wear shorts. For modesty reasons, you won't see a Hof woman wearing tight, body-hugging shorts. I support that.
@rachelcookie321 Жыл бұрын
Personally I find skirts way more comfortable than trousers. I only wear skirts because I find trousers uncomfortable. I don’t think it’s wild to think they might also just like wearing skirts and find them comfortable. In many cultures even men wear/wore skirts or similar clothing because it was comfortable and practical.

Why do you eat pork when in Leviticus 11 tells you not too. And why do you worship on Sunday when the 10 commandments say remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy?
@familyof10523 жыл бұрын
Because it is the old testament not the new testament. Also worship is fine on sundays. It means not to go to work at a job and things like that.

@@familyof1052 Thank you for the answers , but I am still confused why it is ok to change the 10 commandments. when they plainly say remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. If you can explain better I will appreciate it.
@SomeoneBeginingWithI3 жыл бұрын
The vision Paul had of the food being lowered down on the blanket, and some of the letters Paul wrote, are generally interpreted by most Christians as meaning that the rules about which foods are allowed to be eaten do not apply to Christians. Because of the New Testement, most Christians would say that all food is permissible for Christians because nothing that goes into the body can make the person unclean. The Bruderhof puts a lot of emphasis on trying to live like people in the early church communities, around the time described in Acts and the people Paul's letters were written to. The Bruderhof are not trying to live like the people Moses was leading in the desert. The Bruderhof put more emphasis on trying to closely follow the New Testement, and less emphasis on trying to closely follow the Old Testement.
@katiebwheeler3 жыл бұрын
You have to look at not only the commands but also who is giving them. The pharisees one could argue followed the law as closely as anyone and they were referred at as the walking dead and Jesus himself “broke the sabbath” to heal people. Looking at the Bible as a whole not just that specific part, Jesus dying on the cross and paying the debt for our sin freed us from many of the requirements in the Old Testament. Are there many laws/guidelines in the Old Testament that are still applicable and to our benefit to follow, absolutely! With keeping the sabbath though looking at Gods character as we see in the Bible keeping the sabbath holy and set apart gave them a framework to set aside time that was just for God, that time of rest is also beneficial for our physical bodies and families. It’s not changing the Ten Commandments… it’s connecting the Old and New Testament, the specific day doesn’t matter, it’s the regular time set aside for worshiping and building relationship with God for gathering as families and the church to strengthen, encourage and build each other up to sing His praises together…
