In the Woodrow Wilson house, Frank's studio was the ground floor at the front. There was a door directly into it across the front lawn (now hidden by jungle). You had to climb steps with an iron railing to reach the front door to the rest of the house which was actually the ground floor at the back, the house being set into a hillside.

Another Monkees connection with Frank Zappa, he appeared in a episode of the Monkees TV show in which he took a sledge hammer to a old car and he also had a cameo in the Monkees movie Head. Zappa and John Lennon got who and what the Monkees were, a musical Marx Brothers. The mid to late 60's was a fantastic time for rock music and I know a lot of people in the LA music circle hated the fact that this was not an organic band and denied them the respect they deserved. They had some of biggest hits of 1966 and 1967 and they did persevere until 1970, as a band looking for the respect they were denied. They did write their own music and were accomplished musicians too. Not only did this band turn a 11 year old girl onto music back in 1966, it turned a lot kids onto rock music and many became musicians. It breaks my heart that they will never make it in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, even with all they gave to the future of rock music, the TV show was ground breaking and won 2 Emmy awards and the first music video was Rio by Mike Nesmith who too what he learned with the Monkees romps and that led to MTV and music vids.

Zappa was a bit different. I saw him once around 1979. We may have had shrooms on our pizza before the show. My mantra for the evening was " wtf is going on " . Also I was a child in Rancho Cucamonga in the mid sixties so we were tight like that.

@@bonniebrown6960 I think at the time most of those artists moved to Laurel Canyon cause it was cheap to live there. That's really the main reason it all happened there. Most of the houses have been redone, but a few, like Joni Mitchell's place are still exactly the same.

I think most of the people that live in the houses now know but I have talked to neighbors who had no idea. Some of them are occupied by well known people now which is info I omit cuz I wouldn't want anyone bothering them. If the "legends" still live in the house I don't put them in the vid.

According to the former Frank Zappa secretary Pauline Butcher Bird, during the short time of three months Zappa rented the house, there were no parties. It could be interpreted the way it is told here that life in the log cabin was nothing but a big party. Pauline says the word *monastery* is a better description of how it really was. Perhaps, a monastery with quite a few unpredictable and non wished for periods of, not feasts, but rather fasts.

My biggest regret in life is not visiting laurel canyon the few times I visited Los Angeles. Lastly Zappa is great. It could be argued that his drug of choice was sex.

An interesting Frank Zappa/Linda Ronstadt connection: From Frank Zappa: “In 1967 we were living in New York and I got a request from an advertising agency…So, Linda Ronstadt happened to be managed by Herb Cohen, who was our manager at the time. Ian Underwood and I put together this track, and Linda did the vocal on top of it, and we made a demo. They paid a thousand dollars for the demo, and that was the last I ever heard from ’em. They didn’t like what I did.” Oh well. ” kzbin.info/www/bejne/joubnmqGaL94d9E According to Ronstadt “It was so musically complicated that I don’t know if they liked it. It was kind of like Bambi and Deep Throat on the same bill; it was not a likely pairing.” But all was not lost! Many years later that Zappa/Ronstadt demo would influence the theme to one of the greatest tv shows ever...The Simpsons. From dangerousmindsdotnet: ” When Matt Groening hired Danny Elfman to write the theme for The Simpsons, he gave him a mixed tape of songs that he wanted the music to sound like: The theme from The Jetsons, some of Esquivel’s “space age bachelor-pad music,” a teach-your-parrot-to-talk record, selections from Nino Rota’s Juliet of the Spirits soundtrack and this unused Frank Zappa-produced radio commercial for Remington electric shavers that features the vocal stylings of none other than a young Linda Ronstadt. The future queen of country rock is nearly unrecognizable here, speeded-up, multi-tracked and sounding like she’s just taken a hit off a helium balloon. At the end, Zappa tells listeners that the Remington electric razor “cleans you, thrills you… may even keep you from getting busted.” According to legend, after giving the tape several listens Elfman told Groening, “I know exactly what you’re looking for!” The result: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4HdhGaHjsdrbJo
